Title: Inventory in 1999 vs Inventory 2012
Post by: lmunchkin on July 20, 2012, 06:56:04 PM
When I went to work for my current employer in 1999, I did alot of inventory back then and literally dispised it!  It was all counted by hand and you had to record it on paper.  Then sit down at ole computer and type all of what you had written in to computer. Then save it and do a backup on it.  No one liked inventory back then. Since no one liked doing it, of course, I did it just to keep the peace!

I would type those numbers in with SKU # and if I made a mistake, I would go back and correct it.  It was ok back when I had the eyesite to do it, lol....

Now I have always feared computers & internet and all this modern technology, but as of today, I am thankful for it.  Hadnt done inventory at work since 2006 (I believe that is correct) cause they switched to a new system and I just wasn't interested in learning it on the new one.  Had other things to do besides inventory.  So just never learned!

Today, my boss asked if I could inventory a section for him. I was speachless!   Fear took over and I just stood there looking at him.  He said, "You know I wouldnt ask you to do this, but this section hasn't been inventored in a long time and Im overloaded, would you mind doing this for me?" All I could say is "huh?"  He could tell there was something wrong with me, so he pulled me in the office and asked if I was ok? I said yea, but I didnt know how to do it on the new system! "your kidding" he said.  Nope, I told him.  I never learned it on the new system.

He said wev'e been on this new system for a few years now, how did I miss learning? I told him with all these new hires who come & go over the years, they would do it, so I never had to learn! I told him, that my eyesight is getting worse with age and I would be real slow with all the numbers I would have to type in!  He laughed and said, lady-it aint like that anymore.

He took me out to the section with the R-F unit and scanned and counted then entered # in unit.  When he was done with all that, we went in to computer room.  He showed me how to pull the stuff taken on R-F unit and walllla, it was all ligned up on a page.  It was amazing. It was all there and I only had to make changes to items that were in question, and make the change, save and print it out. Easy peasy!!

I went out and did this whole section in 2.5 hrs.  I loved it! I have always been one to help out anyone I can if possible and if I know nothing about the job, I learned it quickly by repitition. Don't care much about book learning, but love to do with my hands (OJT).

When I left today, He said he couldnt believe I got by that long with out doing inventory.  I told him I wouldnt mind doing it all the time now. All this time, I was intimidated by this inventory on the new system, turns out my fears were for naught!!!!!

If you ever have a new challange come your way, don't fear it, just hit it head on.

Thanks for reading this.  I wanted to share it with the people I love!

God Bless,
