This short video shot in 1963 shows the very FIRST patient in the world to perform self hemo-dialysis at home. Very interesting video. It looks ancient to us now, I wonder 40 years from now people will look back and think the way we do it now is ancient? Damn I hope so.  ;)

Nah unfortunately things look very familiar from 30 years ago.  I think it will probably take another 30 years to see a meaningful change.

I found the video interesting, I was surprised to see self cannulation back then, I thought that was something that patients started doing more recently. Thanks Epoman for sharing that.

Years ago when I saw the 2nd or 3rd  " Star Trek " movie, (the one where they return to Earth),  there was a line in it that I will NEVER forget.

Bones says,  " Dialysis???.......How BARBARIC !!! "

I have to stick up for Seattle. That remarkable video was of a self-dialysis pioneer, hospital based self-dialysis. Home dialysis was pioneered by Nancy Helms right here in Seattle. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Home_hemodialysis#History_of_home_hemodialysis

It is part of the Northwest Kidney Center's creation myth. ;)

I grew up with my father on dialysis. He started Home Hemo in 1973 , he did the whole set up and self cannulated. We all stayed clear until he was on then had to act as slaves  :D getting anything he required  :P.

I really admire him now for what he achieved back then. He pushed for what he wanted and did what he had to do. He taught me to stand up for myself and question everything. Unfortunately he isnt around to see it.

Hmmm. That patient has a nurse bring him  a drink-- tea I presume-- and a newspaper!

I'm not going to say anything else. hehehe. :-X
