Title: I Want To Try On My Wedding Gown, Should I or Shouldn't I?
Post by: Cordelia on June 22, 2012, 10:22:50 AM
I gotta question to ask:

I am almost down to what I weighed when I got married-17 yrs ago, isn't that amazing?!  I might be roughly 5 pounds above what I was when I go married, if that.

Dialysis has done me welll, kept me pretty strict with my diet and I have lost roughly 75 pounds since starting hemo back in the summer of 2010.

I'm dying to see what I look like in my wedding gown. Just for fun. No, I"m not planning to redo my wedding vows.

Problem is, my wedding gown is packed away in a box, professionally dry-cleaned tucked neatly away in a box, sealed after it was dry cleaned.

Should I take it out for fear of damaging it or should I say to heck with it, just do it and have it re dry cleaned again?  Or, should I just leave it there?

I have saved it for my daughters to wear one day IF they want to. I'd love to show it to my kids. They've never seen it.

Got any advice on what I should do? I'm tempted to take it out and try it on but at risk of damaging it, I'm leery.

Ladies, what's your advice?

Try it on!  What's the point of keeping it if you don't get to do what you want with it?

We want pics!

Cordelia, DO IT, TRY IT ON. I have kept mine in a drawer for over 46 years. it is a  long slim Nottingham lace dress. I can still get into it, I have not put ant weight on in all that time. My granddaughter has even played dress up in it. I have washed it in the washer and it came up beautifully. My daughters friend who is very slim like me has tried it on and she wants to borrow it for her wedding. Nottingham lace is all in at the moment. Go for it, there must be thousands of woman who have stashed their dresses away.

I am adding my voice to the demands that you go try that dress on - right now if you've got a moment!  :pics; :pics; :pics;

I have no desire to try mine on ever again even though it's part of a lovely memory and was a gift from my sister-in-law who once owned her own bridal shop in Wales. Gwyn proposed in Wales and we met the next day to tell them and she opened her shop up New Years Day just so I could have a look round. I love the dress, got it professionally cleaned and repaired (grass stains from 1940s garden party theme), but have no idea why I'm keeping it. Not even sure where it is. I know I'm probably a bit lighter than I was on my wedding day, or maybe exactly the same size, dunno. Now that you've brought it up, Cordelia, I think I'll chat with Gwyn about what to do with our wedding attire. The boys might wear Gwyn's great coat, waistcoat and cravat, but unless one of them is destined to become one outrageous stunner of a drag queen, I don't think the dress holds any appeal for them.

Why not call your local dry cleaners and ask them how best to "revive" your dress without damaging it?

I'm giggling at all your responses, thank you all for rooting/cheering me on!         :thumbup;       I took MM's advice and called the drycleaners yesterday but by the time I guess I tried calling, they were closed.       ::)        And, they're closed today when I tried calling today.        ::)

I'll try calling again soon.   I want to be sure, it won't cause damage to it if I take it out of the keepsake box.      ;)         ;D

Try it on.  I'm not married and I already have plans for my wedding when I do. I have always wanted to do the "trash your dress" photo shoot.

OMG, I'm gonna do it! I'm gonna do it!!!!!!!!

I called the drycleaners, they said GO FOR IT! LOL And, I was told that IF there is any yellowing on it, they'd re-dry clean it.....for free! Apparently when I had it done, it was a "guarantee" for about 20 years, isn't that cool?!       :bandance;        :bandance;       :bandance;
If there's no yellowing, I can just put it back in the keepsake box where it was stored and it shouldn't be a problem!

Oh, I can't wait! LOL LOL       :yahoo;            :2thumbsup;

I'm going to try it on tomorrow night after my dialysis treatment, so I get off any extra fluid that has accumulated over the weekend JUST in case the fluid gain I've had over this weekend has made a difference, I don't really know if it would, but I'm gonna wait til after dialysis just in case!      ;D

I have it up high in my closet on a shelf, out of reach, so I wouldn't be able to get it down right now if I tried LOL

I'm so excited!!!!!! Thank you for all your encouragement, boy my husband and my kids are gonna be so surprised too!

I just hope I can really get into it like I "think" I can!            :rofl;

I'll be back later sometime this week to post a photo!                 :cheer:          :flower;

And lastly          :yahoo;

I'm so proud of myself that I was able to do this, I am in a size 12-that's what I was when I got married 17 years ago! I should try and find an original picture from my wedding day so you can see the before and after             :rofl;

This was my goal. With being on the renal diet for almost 2 years, this was my achievement, hard work pays off!         :thumbup;

Gosh, you really don't look like you're old enough to have been married for seventeen years!  Gorgeous!

As it happens, I tried my wedding dress on a few weeks ago.  There will be no pics because it fell down to my ankles (due to me being half the woman I was five years ago).

 ;D

lol, i could prolly still easily fit into mine, since its only a little over 2 years old, but mine is more of a sunday dress, we ddnt have a big formal wedding, bc of money, but it was nice

I have been trying to find an original photo that I thought I had saved to my PC. Maybe I'll just scan a photo instead. I'll have to do that sometime and post too!           :)

Cordelia, your waist looks so nice and skinny!  I weigh less than I did when I was in my twenties, but for some reason (age?) my waistline seems to have disappeared.  :(

I'm so flatered, thank you BigE!

It's been a huge accomplishment for me.  I never, ever thought I'd go from a size 18 down to  a 12 in less than 2 years! LOL

I feel great!           :thumbup;     It's amazing how much more tired I felt carrying around all the extra weight on me.  I had so little energy too, coupled likely with the advanced CKD.

Now, I walk about 3 km's a day and don't feel winded while exercising, it sure is awesome feeling more energetic!
