Title: Dang!!!!
Post by: Joe on June 08, 2012, 02:14:56 PM
Had a discussion with my donor today, and it looks like our plan for September may be postponed. In talking to his HR folks, they originally told him he needed to cover the first week of his off time with vacation and then his short term disability would kick in. Now they have come back and told him the policy is really that he will have to use all of his vacation time before the short term disability will be effective. That would mean that he would not have any leave until July of 2013. Given that, he wants to wait until January to do this. That's an additional 5 months of dialysis I wasn't counting on. I know it's not the end of the world, but dang it, I was mentally prepared for September!

Dang! Some companies have no compassion. At least he's still willing to donate.

Maybe you could do some fundraising to reimburse him for the time he'd miss if he just took a leave of absence, leaving his benefits in place.
Sounds odd to me, that a company can require you to use vacation time before disability is in effect.
Some employers require that you use all your sick days before receiving short-term disability benefits, but not vacation days.
I guess it varies state to state.
