Title: Ode to an Ice Cube
Post by: mrhecht on February 11, 2007, 05:11:52 PM
I wrote this years ago, (1992, 93 something like that). I had been on dialysis for about 4 years and had switched from PD to hemo. The fluid restriction took SOME getting used to. I had dreams at night of tall glasses of orange juice, ice cold water with the sweat beads on the outside of the glass. Literally dreams of nothing but glasses full of things I could not drink...........so.......I became addicted to ice cubes and wrote this poem. (Moody Blues ref intentional !)

Ode to an Ice Cube

Clear, cold orb that rules my glass,
With so many types, it's hard to pass.
Small, soft cubes with dimples are divine;
When slightly melted, crunch inside my mouth quite fine!
And ice machines! Heaven! Sample I must
If I don't stop with one cup, surely I'll bust!
Nothing has ever tasted quite as sweet
As a mouthful of frozen water against my teeth!
My dentist has scolded and my doctor frowns;
Yet I continue devouring the frigid crowns.
Round ones and square ones
Chipped, crushed and frappéed ones!
Time-honored friends, I hope you relate;
This longing for ice cubes just will not abate.
So onward I trek in search of perfection,
Longing for frozen (and melting) confections.

That is VERY good! It has a Moody Blues feel to it but for Ice ;)  :thumbup;

Exactly how I feel about the ice at the clinic.  Yummy.  I sit and wonder how much it would cost to buy one exactly like it.  And then I think maybe I could buy one on E-bay.  I love that ice.  Soft and chewy.

Oh yes!!  :clap; Definately!!  :2thumbsup; I have not been able to replicate the same ice chips at home! :( and if I take some home and throw it into my freezer it melts a bit and then becomes a solid mass! :( Just not as food!

I even bought a stupid $70 electric ice crusher but it only chops my ice cubes so I have HARD sharp ice chips.  So....it sits in my kitchen.

Un-used....un-loved!   :(

Ya, I have a Blender that has an ice crusher setting but the water in my building tastes like crap making for crappy tasting icecubes and like you said, they are hard! Too hard for crunching like with the dialysis unit's ice! How do they do it? lol

But don't you just love when someone takes a song and redoes it with a totally different feel? I'm a huge fan of contemporary Christian music and I love it when some of the altenative and rock groups take the old hymns and give them a modern "flava"!

For me it all sounds good, country, rock, alternative, except that thrash (trash) metal where they just scream and bang on the guitar......yuck!

Sonic drive-ins have that soft little pellet ice. HEAVEN!!!  My dentist, as he was fitting me for my 3rd crown, actually suggested which restaurants in our area have the "good" ice.

It has to be the ice from the machine in the vending room - little square pillow shapes.  The machine in the unit makes little crunchy shards - easy to chew, but they melt almost immediately, and don't stay in your mouth long enough to quench your thirst.

Sad, sad, sad!   :D

We have a Britta for our water. I don't even know what the water tastes like from our faucet never drank it! My brother and mother only drink bottled water. I think Britta is cheaper. Funny though, my brother's wife only drinks from the faucet.

We have a PUR water pitcher- I only drink bottled water when I have to, since the plastic has carcinogens that can cause cancer!

I forgot the recipe for ice.  I told you all I was a bad cook!  But then Target had an automatic ice machine maker or is it ice maker machine and there you go!  No need for a recipe, just a pitcher of water every now and then added to it!
