I have a laptop with a webcam (that I've never used...the webcam, I mean), and my son in the UK has the same and also has a skype account. I would like to be able to talk to him and see him online, and I hear about people using skype to do this but I have no idea how it works. I've done some fact-finding online and know that you have to download the software, and it seems that if you "talk" to someone who also has a skype account, it's free, but past that, I'm really in the dark. Anyone here use skype to communicate with people?
PS...my son is mildly autistic and had the software downloaded for him, apparently, and he doesn't know enough about it to guide me.
Thanks for any advice.

I skype with my son and a few friends from here. If you go to their web site you will be guided on how to install it. just google Skype and the site should come up. Good luck.

I've never used it so can't offer any advice. My mum uses it though, and if she can use it, anybody can use it!
;D

OK, that's great to know! So, I don't need any other equipment besides my laptop? How do you actually make a connection? Oh, never mind...I guess it will all become apparent once I download the software.
Again, thanks everyone.

I think skype might be my project for the upcoming week. I just can't be bothered with it right now because I have a tired brain this weekend. :P Once I've figured it out, I'll let you all know...probably this time next month. LOL!

When you download it and open it, you load in the persons username (think phone number) and it adds them to your contact list. Then when the person is available I think it lights up a green dot next to their name or puts them in bold - it's been awhile since I used it, my parents and I skype when my son want a Grammy and Poppy fix. Then to connect you click on the contacts name and start video call. It dials them like a phone would and on the other end they get an alert that they have an incoming "call" from you. Once they accept your request for a video call, it connects and you're good to go. We've had minor issues with it (choppy picture, audio cutting in and out) but usually those sorts of things are solved by hanging up and restarting the call.
And nope, all you need is your laptop. When you start the call the little light next to your webcam should light up, and you will be able to see a picture/video of yourself in the corner so you know how you look to the other person.
Good luck! It's great when it's working well, annoying when it's not. But it is very simple to use.

Skype my parents inthe UK or if you consider getting Apple devices, you could also consider Facetime

I have WebCam on mine too, but don't want people looking at my ugly ass face.

We use skype and like it here. My daughter talks and sees friends with it that are in different places in the UK. I say try it out!
