I got up this morning and in hurry to take my kid to school. I did change my underwear and went on driving.
My kid told me I smell bad; I asked him did it smell like pee? He said no. It is more like something decomposing or rotten.
I was wondering could it my exit. Anyone has similar experience that wants to share?

Theone,
Are you currently on dialysis? Uremia will cause what you have described. Uremia is a toxin that causes a urine or ammonia like smell due to high levels of BUN - Blood Urea Nitrogen. I would look up and get your last blood results for your BUN and Creatinine. If these are high, then this could be the culprit. If you are on dialysis, this is an indication that you are not receiving enouph dialysis to rid the body of the toxins that cause this.

My mom is always sniffing me. She can tell from that if I'm doing well with dialysis. Weird but true.

I sniff myself and know when I am not doing so well. Doesn't smell like pee or ammonia, more like dirty skin (which it isn't i hasten to add!!) :rofl;

I have to admit that during the very short time I was on PD that I did smell a distinct urine smell around the house. I was on CCPD and used to back that that up with CAPD on my days off.
My wife was always kind and diplomatic and said she didn't detect any such odor.
Since my recent transplant I have to say that I do not smell it any longer. Being alive is worth putting up a few odors is how I felt about it.

i think its kind of a bleachy type smell on me... chemical i suppose?
sometimes my breathe smells like something died... i can brush and brush, but im so thirsty ...

Thanks for the info. I will be on the look out for the smell if I dont have enough dialysis.

I always thought it smelled more like ammonia.

Okay. Great. So, now I stink. My sister just told me I have a "faint aroma". Not always, but sometimes. My clearance levels are coming back very good, but my labs are lopsided. I guess my BUN is okay, they have never told me otherwise. Wouldn't they? How can I get rid of it? I shower everyday and am a fanatic about brushing my teeth. Now, I am really self conscious!!!!

I am so grateful to know I am not the only one. Sometimes the smell of my urine is enough to knock over a dead horse.

Well, this is just one more thing to add to my list of dialysis concerns, large and lumpy fistula, weird diet,being held prisoner in a uncomfortable chair for four hours three times a week, being stuck with two enormous needles,taking a boat load of pills, and now I find out I may smell. Dear God what else can be thrown on the heap. Oh yea there is a fruit that can kill me. No wonder I hate dialysis!
-
I'm sure I don't smell....... I don't do I? Nah I don't
:beer1;

How many besides me took a sniff to check.

It makes you wonder, tho, when you pass by someone and they stink, you think "Don't they smell themselves? What are they, hard of smelling?" Maybe they're just used to stinking. Could be???? Maybe not. I just don't know. Oh, bother!!!
-
I think I'd rather smell a bit of dialysis than what some people I've come across out in public smell like. Not to mention politicians and what they try pushing on us..
-
Wife is always telling me that I stink. Most of the time she says I smell like an ashtray because I smoke.
I don't notice a thing. Am I accustomed to it? I don't doubt that a gradual change over time we may never notice until someone else tells us.
Once while in the Hospital I did have a Dr mention to me that my feet had a definite acidic smell, not a usual foot odor but a rather sharp acid, as if someone spilled a bottle in the lab. I asked the Nurse and she said she hadn't noticed but she did get me a bottle of liquid soap and a couple of towels.
Some of us may be clueless, and have no idea that we have an 'aura'.
Be gentle, unless you know us pretty well, then tell us straight out.

My bun is 35 and I am not on D. Is that considered too high? Only 10 points over the norm, it says.
