Title: swelling in abdomen
Post by: jshabanian on March 09, 2012, 07:06:00 PM
Okay, so now I have a new problem.  I started gaining weight very rapidly and thought it was because I was eating more.  Finally got an appetite and was enjoying food alot!  But then I noticed I was swelling in my abdomen and genital area.  I gained about 12 pounds in a week or so.

So now I need an x ray to see where I am leaking and have to stop pd until I get this figured out.  Back to hemo tomorrow morning at 5:30 am.  Yuck.  I hate hemo so much.  I just hope I can continue with pd when I get this thing resolved.  It may be because of my hernia repairs.

Has anyone had this happen to them?

I've never heard of "leaking" the way you're describing. Sounds awful! I hope they can help you soon.

Ugh, just where every woman wants to gain weight.   :P

Sorry, never did PD, so no help here, but wanted to say I sympathize!

jshabanian, it could be a leak, at least they are going to sort it. A friend of ours has just had an hernia repair and he was on PD, it did not heal properly and he has had to go on hemo for a while, he can not wait to go back to PD. Hope things work out  well for you.

I personally have not had a leak. I know of other who have in my clinic and yes they too had to go on hemo for a short time.

I once had the tip of my cathether go into my chest and I had to then do surgery to stuture (sp?) the bottom of my cather in the pelvic area.

I hope what I tell you doesnt freak you out, I personally loved pd far more than hemo and if my doc would allow me to try again, I would in a heart beat!

I did pd for like.. a lil over a month, and i ended up gaining 54 lbs of fluid due to my tube getting moved, possibly pulled in my sleep? and it was mostly in my abdomen, but i really noticed that it was fluid, rather than fat, because my hips were also getting rather large and if i sat down for a moment and stood up id have impressions.
Originally they thought I had infection, i didnt. Then they thought hernia, while i did, and do, have a hernia, it wasnt the cause. It wasnt in correctly, pretty simple, they just had to replace it, which they did.
When I went into the hospital for this, I also was having fistula problems, so they decided to do surgery, while i was highly drugged, the nurses didnt know much about pd, and i did end up getting an infection in the hospital, so my doctor advised that i stop pd. So i did... I wish i hadnt, because he said I "can always try again some time later" but now he wont allow me to do so.

I too was shocked with the weight gain my dad is having; he's gained about 5 kg (11 lbs) in just two weeks.  He's going in tomorrow (Weds) to submit his samples and "collection" for Kt/V tomorrow morning, and so he'll probably ask the nurses what's going on.  My concern is that, although he does seem to get some good UF removal during cycler drains/fills with short dwell times, it's the last fill-to-carry and midday fills that are getting absorbed into his body and bloating him up.   Guess we'll see what they say tomorrow...  :waiting;

i had an x-ray on Monday and learned that my catheter is in the perfect place...so that is not the  problem.  Then I had a CAT scan yesterday and am awaiting the results today.  In the mean time I am doing hemo and HATING it!! I took off 9 pounds so far but still have about 12 to go now.  I can take off 9 tomorrow but then I have the 3 days between treatments and will gain more.  I hope they figure out what is wrong so I can get back to PD.

  :(
The CAT scan showed that I am leaking along the incision line from my transplant/nephrectomy surgery.  This incision developed many hernias that were repaired when I had my catheter placed.   The surgeon put mesh along the repair line.  Unfortunately it is leaking there now so I have to stop PD and go back to hemo for 6-8 weeks to allow the inciision to heal.  Then I can try PD again and hope it works.

I am so sad about this.  I really love PD over hemo and felt like I finally had some control over my life.  Now I am back to being strapped in a chair for 12 hours a week.  Well, at least I can try again in a few weeks.

Bummer.   Hopefully all will heal quickly and you'll be back on PD  before summer!  I did both pd and hemo before my transplant and I'm with you, I'd pick pd any day.  I felt so trapped in that chair!
