Title: Weight gain
Post by: geoffcamp on January 09, 2006, 07:05:07 PM
Has anyone experienced a large dry weight gain in a short period of time?  Just a few months ago my dry weight was 95 Kilos then my blood pressure started dropping during treatment so we raised the dry weight to 96.5 Kilos.  Now after a weekend I am coming in at 100+ Kilos and where I used to be able to take off 4.5-5 Kilos my blood pressure drops and I am able to only take off about 3.5 Kilos.  So I am consistantly going out in the low to mid 90's.  There has beeen no change in my eating or drinking habits that I can see, so I am confused.  None f meds have change either.  After treatment I feel ok... no shortness of breath of or extra fatigue (other then normal).  Am I just getting older and fatter or is something else going on.  Nurses seem fine at raising my dry weight and halting the machine when my blood pressure dips.  anyone have any thoughts?

Bumping this up b/c no one ever answered.  Are you still having the problem with your dry weight going up?

I have noticed over the years that as my output  decreased my weight gain and BP would increase.  I have had to periodically adjust what I am eating or drinking to account for it.  I also try to take off .5 kilos more than I have on. This way it balances out what they are returning to me each time through the lines.  Good luck!

I have experienced this as well. I don't know why it happens, as it seems to happen for no reason. One day I will reach my dry weight, then the next day my bp is so low I cant take any fluid off. I have gone up 6kgs in the last 6 months! I am definitely eating better, but theres no way u can gain a kilo or more of fat over night. In the past few weeks I have put my weight up 2kgs, and now my BP has gone up, so I'm bringing my weight back down by an extra 200ml each Dx. I actually went flat on nocturnal the other morning (in the last 5 mins), I have no idea why! I was 300 up on my dry weight, so who knows. I am glad I was in centre at the time, by the time I noticed I was half gone. I guess if I was at home I would of been more aware of it, but I'm usually asleep right up until the machine finishes.

I continue to lose weight, so I'm dropping my dry weight.  BUT, ONLY the doctor can change your dry weight, so I have this fight every session.  My dry weight is WRONG.  Shit, they would be adding fluid to me if they went by the charted dry weight.  Why can't they take MY word for it.   >:(

They take my word for it,  >:D they take off what ever I tell them to take off. Remember you're the boss, your body, you're rules. They HAVE to do what you say, they may how ever have you sign an A.M.A. (against medical advice) or what ever they call it now-a-days.

Only the Doctor can dropped your dry weight Rerun. Just tell them what YOU feel your dry weight should be. If I had to wait for a doctor to drop my dry weight. I would be so overloaded I would not be able to breath. Each time I go I change my dry weight, according to how my BP is or how I feel when I go on the machine. I have took my dry weight down by 7kg over the past 3 months. Only seen a doctor about 5 times if that >:(

OMG thats ridiculous about the doctors having to approve weight changes pfffft!!  ::)
I do it myself, or if I'm unsure I will ask the nurses. The doctors don't have anything to do with it unless we are really having a problem, then they are consulted.

My dietician told me that the nurses and techs have to do as you request.  If you feel you can handle changing your dry weight without any complications then just to let them know, so i did, and they did, no problem,  so i do believe it is up to the patient to determine their dry weight.   Besides, what the hell does the dr. know?  lol,

Its not rocket science to know if you need to change your dry weight. If your BP is creeping up and you have signs of oedema, then what you do is reduce your dry weight by 200ml each treatment. This is what I have been advised anyway. Obviously, there can be other factors that can cause high BP. I also don't get fluid retention is my ankles, which makes it harder to assess. I have to be very very overloaded before my ankles swell.

It took me w little while to convince the dr. I knew what I was talking about but they do listen to me know that I have them convinced. I had a big fight with them one night and ever since they have been listening to me.

People, people, we have to remember we are the captain of the treatment team!  Sometimes we have to act like Captain Bligh to get anywhere with the medical profession.  If you act like the team captain they do listen to you and you will be better off healthwise for it.
