My name is Derrick and I haven't started dialysis yet but I am in stage 4 of renal failure and my health has been a steady decline for this past year. I hope to learn all I can before I start and I think its good to talk with people who are going thru the same things that I am. I have high blood pressure and I'm a diabetic that has been very difficult to control. I am a father of 4 beautiful kids and a husband to my loving wife. We have a strong family support group but non of us has gone thru dialysis until now. So I hope to make new friends and I'm willing to learn all that can be told to me on this format. Thanks in advance

Welcome Derrick. You will learn so much on this site. I found it back in 2007 just days before I got my fistula. I spent hours on the site reading and reading and reading. I look forward to hearing more from you. Hang in there. :waving;

Welcome Derrick! I am spouse of one doing D. You will learn alot from this site. Have wife come on too, tremendous support for the loved ones!
Can you get transplanted? Check into all modalitys, In-Center, or at home: PD & Hemo at home! This stuff is not easy but is not too bad when you get use to it!

Thanks for the response. I have decided to do PD only because I take insulin injections 4 times a day and I've been doing this over 20 years and I hate needles, lol. But the counselor explained that it would be best to have a fistula put in at the same time just in case that is needed in the future. At this time my insurance won't allow me to even get processed for a transplant until January 2013 but with my diabetes being so hard to control the Dr. Think it would be better to have a kidney pancrease transplant. The only problem with that is this procedure has not yet been performed in Arkansas, so when I can get on the transplant list I may have to go out of state to get this done. Thank-you once again

This "pre-dialysis" period is a load of crap and I hate hate hate it. It is so very stressful, so you have my sympathies! BUT the silver lining is that you have time to do your research and decide how best to get your dialysis.
I don't know a thing about PD, and I know about as much about diabetes, but I would think long and hard about combining PD with diabetes that has been hard to control. I think the dialysate used in PD has glucose in it...I'm really sorry, I shouldn't be blathering about something I know nothing about, but I just want to make sure you think about all modalities. I can certainly understand you not wanting to have even more needles to contend with, but the most important thing is that dialysis shouldn't make you sicker. I'm hoping one of our diabetic members will come by and speak more on this subject.
We have one member who had has a kidney/pancreatic transplant...Chris. But, he's up here in Illinois...still, he may be someone you can talk to.

I have to second MooseMom - I feel that the pre-dialysis months/years waiting for the unknown is so hard on everyone.
I have a sister who is now at that stage, and having been through it myself only a few years ago, my heart really bleeds for her. All the worrying in the world won't change anything but it so hard not to worry. (I did PD for a short time and now am almost one year post transplant.) MooseMum is correct in saying about PD and the glucose but there is some other kind of dialysate that can be substituted - I think.
All the best and congrats for finding this site - it is such a life saver, full of info, humour and help.

Derrick..... welcome to the board. I hope you find all of the information you need. It is all very helpful.
I am a Type 2 diabetic. I am listed for transplant (when I had asked about kidney/pancreas, they advised me they typically only use that for a Type 1 diabetic).
Anywhoooooo ..........I've got my fistula four months now and I've chosen to do notturnal hemo in center (until I can convince my doctor I'm capable of doing it at home alone). I'm not concerned about the needles...I'm planning to quickly develop buttonholes. (I just started using lantus insulin at night and those needles on the lantus pen are really tiny and don't bother me at all)
I too was concerned about doing PD with the glucose, etc. But every modality works differently for every person. I hope this one is a good one for you. Best of luck and welcme again.

Exactly my point! Your 6 days don't come anywhere close to my 29, so you've got to step it up, girl! LOL! You have a lot more valuable experience with this stuff than I do. It's always nice to see you posting from down under.
But how lucky for all those people you lend your well-thought out responsess to. :)
Oh, you mean my 29 days of well-thoughtout whingeing? :P Yeah, lots of lucky people have read lots of my complaining and have been gracious enough not to tell me to shut up. That will probably come on day 30.
