  Less than a week into dialysis and we have hit a huge hurdle - Laurie has an infection ! Lab results came back today and whatever the bug is , is apparently very hard to get rid of . One of the nurses from the clinic dropped a new prescription to our home this evening and also brought the news that the doctor wants him to stay on the bag antibiotics for another three weeks ! That also means no dialysis . Laurie is feeling very unwell . It is very disappointing as we were looking forward to the dialysis making him feel a whole lot better . He is feeling very despondent .

Is this an infection of the peritoneal?  I can't remember if he is doing capd or hemo.  Poor Laurie.  I hope the antibiotics kick the infections butt!  How long has he been on dialysis?

yes peritoneal infection and also a " water bug " - not sure what this means - urinary tract or bug in the water ! Laurie is on CAPD  and only started training last Monday .

Let me get this right, the doc wants Laurie to stay on bag antibiotics for 3 weeks, but it means no dialysis. Can you explain this. If he is on antibiotics is he taking them orally or are they being given in the dialysis bags. Sounds strange.

Yea, that does't sound right to me either! Maybe we are misunderstanding.  I know when J got an infection, I was giving antibiotics shots through the bags.  I dont really understand this!

Yes the antibiotics are given in the bags - but only once a day - dwell for six hours and then drain until the next day . the other new one is given orally .Brenda

Hope he gets through this really quickly Brenda. To echo the concern some of the others have alluded to, is the once a day enough dialysis?

I have established that the peritonitis has been caused by a water borne bug . They now say they only want him to take the oral antibiotic until Monday when he has to go back to the clinic . They say they want to rest him as there has been a leak at the exit site . I have no idea what this all means . So , No , No dialysis at the moment . The antibiotic in the bag is potent Gen something or other and his levels are high .

Are you on town water?  The thought of a water borne bug is quite scary.  Our water is to be cut off for three hours next Wednesday so they can do repairs/cleaning of the mains.  The water is going to be "murky", when it comes back.  I don't fancy doing my pre-D prep with dubious water.

I hope Laurie is feeling a little better

Brenda, try not to worry about this, the antibiotics are strong and will kick in. They will sort his exit site out also. Its just a pain in the bum. Dont let it put you off PD, things happen.

Things are not going well . I am trying to convince Laurie to go to emergency - he is complaining of struggling for breath and also his left hand and arm are very swollen - probably fluid . He is steadfastly refusing to go ! I can not contact pd clinic on the weekend , he has an appointment with them Monday morning .

If he won't go to the emergency room,  I'd call 911 and let the emergency techs take over.   He needs to address this to ease his symptoms and also to give you some peace of mind.  Give him the ultimate,  "Either you let me take you to the ER now,  or I dial 911 and let an ambulance take you"

I agree with Todd.  If he wont go with you to emergency, call an ambulance.

Isn't strange how these things always happen at the weekend?

Brenda, did you take him to emergency or called an ambulance? I am really surprised you have no back up emergency at your unit. I would look into this. We have a 24hr one, if our unit is closed ie after 5 we call the renal ward and they sort us out. Hope every thing is OK.

Yea your clinic should have a nurse on call after hours.  Did he go to ER, Brenda?
