So, Blokey and Our Kidney are getting on fabulously. He's not falling asleep every evening, he's got lots of energy, he's peeing and he's being a good boy with his meds.
However, he has this blasted bump on his abdomen (on the side of Our Kidney, but above it.) When they first prodded and scanned it (before Christmas) they said it was fluid, and that it would either dissipate of its own accord or would need to be drained (with the possibility that it might come back and further surgery would be needed.) They booked him in for another scan for yesterday, so off he toddled and the technician got merry with the scanner and Blokey went back to work, relieved that it was now being looked at again.
Today he had his fortnightly transplant clinic and was informed that it's a blasted HERNIA!!
*sigh*
How did they not know? Dr. (Probably Not Delectable) Neph said that the surgeon would probably want him to lose weight before it gets repaired. Blokey got quite angry (I wasn't there; I'm guessing) and told them he was only 2kg heavier than he had been at the time of his transplant and it's their fault for not noticing earlier and he's NOT going to go through hoops for them to repair something that should have been discovered and repaired long ago.

It does mean that he'll have to have up to three more weeks off work, and he's more than a little irked about this. We think it will be in four to six weeks. My MiL is expecting an appointment to have her hernia operated in the near future ... let's hope they don't end up in beds next to each other; he'll go bonkers! It also means that I get to play nursemaid again, but this time I won't have the excuse of a painful belly myself!

The worst part is that no matter how much in fault the Drs are, and in this case, they truly are, you and Blokey are the ones who have to go thru the surgery and all the other fun things. I dont blame you for venting, let it rip honey.

I admit I am worried about any effect the surgery may have on Our Kidney, but this isn't just a slight hernia. It's HUGE, and very prominent! Blokey feels really self-conscious about it and it's making him miserable.

I have read of living kidney donors getting hernias after surgery. Apparently it's not uncommon with abdominal surgery for a small hole or tear to get larger post surgery. Never heard of a recipient getting one.
I hope he gets taken care of soon! :cuddle;

Maybe he accidentally got given the hernia which should have, by rights, been mine. Some Higher Being screwed up there!

Blokey had his fortnightly clinic today, billyb. They got the surgeon down to talk to him and told him all the bad stuff that could happen. It's going to be a big op because it's a massive hernia. He has to nay or yay and give them some dates when he'd like it done and they'll take it from there. Of course he'll yay, but there's a 30-40% chance it will occur again and if it does they probably won't do anything to fix it. He's more than a little peeved because if they hadn't been so AdamAnt that it was just a fluid bump it probably could have been operated on when the tear wasn't so big and he would have stood a better chance of it not happening again. It makes me want to scream!

Can someone please help me, I need to know if anyone else has been through this, my hubby has been in center dialysis for 3 years now, now we found out he has renal cancer, I dont want to loose my hubby I am not ready to be a widow, what do we do, we are scared, this has been so hard , please help me!, I am at my ropes end.

Just an update: Blokey had his operation today. I have the bed to myself for the next few nights. Pure heaven! (I think he's okay; pained and drowsy according to his last text, but otherwise fine.)
If anybody is up for sending positive vibes and prayers in his direction they'd be much appreciated.

Thanks, my lovelies! I think we both feel that our lives have been on-hold for the last few months because of the damned incompetence of the delectable Dr. Neph! We should have been celebrating the transplant more and planning for our future. Hopefully the hernia is fully repaired and won't come back (and if it does, that it won't be so big and dramatic!) and we can finally live a life ... and Blokey is looking forward to having a flat belly and being surgery free for a good few years now!
He's been de-hooked but he had a high temp and they think he has an infection, but he seems in high spirits (by text ... saw him yesterday but he was groggy and in oodles of pain; won't see him again till tomorrow).

Poppy so glad Blokey is doing OK.Hope the infection clears quickly.
Isn't it lovely to have the bed to your self, you can spread out , flap your arms and legs, read and have the remote all to your self. Heaven for a couple of nights and then you start missing them for a cuddle, or to warm your feet on. I was going to say you will miss the sex, I don't think I would, in fact hubby says he wishes you could get it on the NHS or on prescription. I just tell him to dream on. Thinking about you both.

The Delectable Dr. Neph saw Blokey yesterday, scoffed at the infection suggestion and said Blokey can come home when he's had a poo. He still hasn't had one. Plus, the surgeon has to see him and also say he can come home. Please send poo-going thoughts so he can come home!!

Thanks Nat! He managed to have a poo (or two, apparently) and thus came home last night. Yay! I'm being quite the little nurse.

(He's been ill since Thursday, has barely eaten but is drinking lots. I have been stomping around like a moody arse and doing enough worrying for the both of us. ;D)
