Hello all!
I decided to start a thread here about a potential meetup in Chicago in the spring so as not to continue to clutter up the Vegas 2012 thread.
For those who might be interested, I wanted to get some thoughts as to location, timeframe, format etc.
My initial thoughts were sometime in April when the weather is better (who am I kidding, it could still be snowing then).
I am thinking of somewhere in downtown Chicago that would be relatively close to public transportation. I know I hate driving into the city and paying for parking.
My thought was that we could gather somewhere that has a party room that we could have for an afternoon, rather than take up tables for an entire afternoon. I'm sure we'll be chatty!
As far as the menu, I am thinking that each person would pay for themselves. Depending on the place selected and the size of the group, we may either just order off the menu or have a preselected menu that we could choose from for a set price. I know for larger groups, some places prefer to do it that way so they can better time the service.
Thoughts? Am I on the right track? I'm all ears if someone has a better idea.
Date has been set as April 29th, at the Copper Fox in St. Charles. Time is 12:00 Noon.
Please RSVP by April 8th.
Website with menu and other info is copperfoxcafe.com

Im not good with geography, but I think I could attend a Chicago meet up, cause Vegas is just too far to drive! Not sure though, due to the money constraints. But Im glad to see that maybe meetups in different parts of the US, would really be awesome! That way people who want to drive, can!!!! And all would have a chance to meet others in their area.
Excellent idea, and I hope you get some ideas too!
Thanks for offering this Cattlekid,
lmunchkin
:kickstart;
P.S. I think every state in the Union, has something special in them to see. I do like to do & see alot of things, but I also enjoy the peace & quite & just relaxing too!
-
i would definitely meet up in chicago in the spring. just say when and where. there are tons of places we could meet. i grew up down there and most resturants down there have small, med and large party rooms. depending on where you would want to meet (what area ) ican maybe throw some suggestions out there.
-
I'd be coming in from the far western suburbs to Ogilvie, so anywhere within shooting distance from that train terminal would be fine. I don't really care where we go or what we eat. Whatever is simple for everyone would be great. I'd be happy with booking a separate room. I don't know downtown Chicago all that well, so I don't have any suggestions as to venue, but I'm sure there are plenty to choose from.
-
I'm coming from Union Statio and if I am not scheduled for guide dog training in April, I'd make it.
Not sure about a meeting room, but the Marriot on Michigan Avenue (and Ohio if I remember correctly) has a great sitting area by a restaurant and a Starbucks on the second floor. Some of the available seating areas are like little rooms with a big enterance with a couch and I think 3 or 4 chairs (2 for sure).
Otherwise I can think of restaurants: Cheesecake Factory (Michigan and Deleware (Hancock Building), Portillo's and Pizzaria Uno (off Mighigan Avenue on Ontario), restaurant (large seating outside) in front of Milenium Park (Chrome Kidney Bean), or Navy Pier which has various amounts of eateries and large amounts of seating outside or in the park. Sit down restaurant is an Italian type of food (forgot name).
There is also the Berghoff, a german cusine place that is famous in Chicago, which is off Adams I think (I see it on the bus ride back to Union Station)
-
around michigan avenue there are tons of places, giardano's , pizzeria uno, the rosebud, there is even a tgif's off of michigan ave, and then in navy pier there is a seafood place ( i forgot what it's called--something along the lines of forest gump) and then there is the top of the hancock there is a bar that serves food/appitizers that you can see the skyline of chicago (i use to go there all the time) alot of times they have musicians performing. so many places downtown, you also have the "tourist traps" of places like hardrock , etc. depends on where you would want to meet.
-
I think the seafood place is called Bubba Gump's on Navy Pier http://www.yelp.com/biz/bubba-gump-shrimp-co-chicago
Pretty good food.
-
Just a suggestion for any that don't want to brave the city but isn't too far. Starved Rock in Utica is very easy to get to and has a great restaurant/meeting area at the main lodge. I am not opposed to Chicago, however. Any place to meet all my wonderful friends!
-
I'll repeat what I posted on the LV thread. I'm in St. Charles, so if anyone wants someplace quieter or doesn't want to have to faff about with the chaos that is Chicago, St. Charles/Geneva is a possibility. You can get the Elburn train from Ogilvie. We don't have the big attractions of Chicago, but if all we are going to do is meet for, say, Sunday lunch, this is a pleasant place. We could even have a catered picnic as there are two nice parks closeby, one right by the river.
Saying that, though, I'd be happy with Chicago!
-
Haven't been to Starve Rock in years and it's not that far away from me, but forgot which highway I took to get there.
If the meet is at a seafood place, count me out because I will :puke;
T.G.I.F. is off Michigan and Erie (going east) and is pretty much in the middle before you stop at Saint Clair. One thought that ocured is to pick a place that is more renal friendly for those who have to watch what they eat especially when dialysis is on a Tuesday.
Spealing of pizza, there is Gino's East off of North Saint Clair and Superior
Buses to Michigan Avenue from Union Station that I know of on the weekend are bus 157 from Union Station and Ogalvie that does require a couple blocks of walking to Michigan Avenue from Fairbanks and Huron
-
Billy Goat also in Navy Pier
-
ohhh I love Chicago. I may actually be able to go to that. Chi town is only like 5 hours drive from me in Michgan.
-
Chicago for a day I might be able to pull off. It's about a 4 hour drive from here. Depends on what day, though. Exams are at the end of April, so I wouldn't dare take off when I was supposed to be studying. I'm also hoping to have a job lined up by then, so the middle of the week wouldn't work. It would be fun if I could manage to schedule it though, and far cheaper for me than Vegas.
I second Chris's :puke; regarding seafood. Literally. Since the transplant, I have to take the long way around the fresh fish counter at the store because even the smell makes me queasy!
-
So good to see people in other areas stepping up! So now we have LV & Chicago. Any other meetups any other place?
lmunchkin
:kickstart;
-
I can see where seafood would be a problem, but pizza would be, too. Between the phosphoric cheese and the potassium-laden tomato sauces, pizza places might not be a good choice.
-
Right - I thought about the go-to pizza places downtown but figured our nephs and dietitians would kick our behinds if they heard that we went for pizza LOL
Keep the ideas coming! :2thumbsup;
-
I love seafood! But I am adventurous when it comes to eating. If there are enough of us, is there someplace that might fix according to our diet?
-
Probably Chinese is out to? I can't remember what's all offered, but there are a couple places on Ontario on either side of Michigan.
Now I'm trying to remember the famous caramel corn place there :banghead;
Navy Pier has, Billy Goat, McDonald's, an Italian restaurant, a hot dog place (not as good as Portillo's), and various other botique type of eateries on the inside and outside.
Corner Bakery is also off Michigan that has no salt turkey sandwiches (I have a menu in one of my medical folders). For me it is hard to think of restaurants while on dialysis, I never went to one due to the restrictions of diabetes and renal diet.
Took me a few hours, but finally remembered name of popcorn place, Garret's or Garett's.
-
Okay, I started peeking at restaurants and am getting wholly frustrated. Seems like everything near the Ogilvie Transportation Center is only open M-F. Boo hiss.
I am beginning to think that St. Charles/Geneva might be a more viable option. I'm trying to stay away from the tourist traps. I'm going to post a poll in an new thread for a vote. Please go vote there if you are thinking of coming to a Chicago meetup on which you would prefer.
Thanks!! :2thumbsup;
-
Places away from businesses such as the train station would be better where there is the weekend crowds such as Michigan Ave (or off of)and Navy Pier. Hotels that have restaurants is another thought, but more expensive yet more renal friendly since they can cook to request.
-
id love to...
Chris, chrome kidney bean????!?!? HAHA that sounds like a photo op...
I only have one...thing i gotta say... i have had, and highly dislike genos pizza, so if it can be anywhere but there id really be happy lol unless they have other stuff on the menu? idk, all i had was the pizza, and i really didnt dig that!! *was a school function, didnt get to chose anything else!)
-

Yes, this is a real problem. However, it is not a far walk from OTC to the Loop, or you can catch a cab easily enough. That's probably what I'd do if we end up in Chicago.
-
Millenium Park "Chrome Kidney Bean" (forgot actual name.
-
if i go to chicago, im totally getting my pic next to this... HILARIOUS
its like a giant bionic kidney!!
-
When IHD met in Chicago last time we never got close to the chrome bean! There was a concert or something downtown, and my GPS was arguing with Chris's GPS lol, it was funny, but we circled central Chicago, streets were closed so we headed back to the hotel!
Chris, what was the hot dog place we went to?
-
Okarol, the gps was not agreeing with Jess21's either...lol
The hot place we went to was Portillo's.
We did make it to Navy Pier that night, but the fireworks just ended as we were walking up from Northwestern Hospital's parking garage. Think I bought fudge that night too...lol
-
Just some info to think about... Metra has $5.00 fares (unlimited) on the weekend and the CTA has passes ($5-$7, I think) unlimited rides on the weekend. That's usually what we do when we head to Chicago.
-
Can we do it the week of April 6th through the 13th if possible? I have spring break the entire week and be more then willing to pick anyone up that is along the route to Chicago!! :)
xo,
R

I mentioned that too in the other thread cattlekid created, http://ihatedialysis.com/forum/index.php?topic=25629.new;topicseen#new (http://ihatedialysis.com/forum/index.php?topic=25629.new;topicseen#new)
We just need to narrow down where we are going to meet that is easy for most to get to and easy to find with less chance of getting lost.

I have a full size van and also would be willing to provide transport for anyone who needs it.
-
OK, let's see how many GPS's we can get to either agree or disagree with each other :rofl;
-
I don't have a GPS. I have some weird archaeological item called a "map".
-

:rofl;
I have an internal compass if that helps.
I know I have maps, but they are probably outdated with all the recent construction and renaming I-88 as the Reagan Memorial expressway.
-

:rofl; thats what i have too! i dont trust those gps thingys
-
Just remember - the lake is to the right and you'll always point north LOL

:rofl; I can do you one better: I not only have maps, I can fold them, too! :clap; :rofl;
-
FOLD them? i thought u just batted them around and pulled ur hair out and said BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP wadding it up and throwing it! lol just kiddin
-
Thought they were fly swatters once unfolded. Or in my case a bee!
-
So I have been futzing around looking for a suitable venue in downtown Chicago for our meetup, since that seems to be the direction the poll is leaning.
It's frustrating! I'm trying to avoid tourist traps and pizza joints. Couple that with the fact that most of the restaurants near the train stations aren't open on the weekends and things are not easy.
However, I think I may have stumbled onto something - The House of Blues. They have a restaurant, you can park for $8, it's not too far away from public transportation and if we get kicked out of our table, we can always retire to the bar. Those coming from out of town can even stay overnight close by if they wish. There is an adjacent Amalfi hotel but it looks pricey (but beautiful!)
Any thoughts? Am I barking up the wrong tree? Better ideas?
-
Cattlekid, I think that's a smashing idea! My only concern is which day of the weekend might be best. I assumed that Sunday would be best for those people who are on inclinic dialysis, and HOB serves only dinner on Sundays 4:00 to 10:00. If we met up at 4, then maybe people would have enough time to get back home at a reasonable hour...if that's an issue at all. Otherwise, if people are amenable to Saturday, it looks like they're open virtually all day.
-
One thought, with just doing lunch, maybe Chicago should be avoided and those coming out of state who may want to stay can get a hotel off the highway that are far cheaper than Chicago and we could all meet at a restaurant just off the highway. That said, a group photo at Millenium Park "Chrome Bean" would be cool to post on here.
I think we need more input from people who maybe coming to form a plan A,B,C, and a plan D. I know I won't be able to stay for a long time due to lighting conditions (can't drive at night) and need to plan according to light.
As much as Moosemom, you with Bolingbrook, and me with with who knows what, I do not see where we will not have a short travel distance from home. We will have to compromise to suit most of the people.
Forgot who had finals coming up and needed the weekend to study, but I could make it downtown during the week easily to meet up. I probably have a doc appointment up there too.
So let's here it from those interested on where they would like to eat, meet, or do something.
-
I personally am happy to go anywhere in Chicagoland, so when I make this offer, it is not for my own convenience...
If people WANT to avoid Chicago, I'm happy to house some people here at my house. I have two spare bedrooms and a blowup mattress, so some people could crash here in St. Charles. There are also several chain hotels closeby...Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express and one other that I can't remember offhand. There's a wide variety of restaurants like I've said before, so there would be plenty of choices.
If this is an attractive option that y'all want to consider, all I ask is that we make this thread more private and have it accessible only to IHD members...like the Las Vegas meet-up thread.
-
Im up for anywhere, but i do request perhaps a sunday, due to i have dialysis on saturdays!
-

-
Sounds like I may be tie farthest west but I don't mind travelling. JolIet has got some decent places (plus some great shopping!) There's enough suggestions here for several meet-ups! :2thumbsup;
-
Not really for the meetup, but i thought id mention it for those of us in Illinois, id be happy to go and do lunch or something with anyone who wanted to see this stuff...
If people wanna travel, there is some neat things to see down here... i mean... some think its cool anyway LOL
We have Rockome Gardens, which is pretty cool.... its in the heart of Amishland country, lots of need stuff to see... and if memory serves its either free or like super cheap (no more than 10 bucks) to get into the place. They have the best homemade candies cakes, and the pretzels are heaven! Lots of antique places too. Also, some historical sites in nearby places.
-
Taking into account requests by GLM and rsudock, how about we at least agree on a date? This means we are looking at either 8 April or 15 April. Now, 8 April happens to be Easter Sunday, so I don't know if that's a problem. If so, would Sunday 15 April be convenient?
-
As long as it is in the afternoon, Easter would be fine but I would prefer the 15th.
-
As long as it is not a later afternoon lunch. Due to vision, time sun starts to set, and it takes an hour for train to get to my stop and another 45 min to get home (on a usual weekday), I'm in!
-
Then let's make it the 15th as then we would have all day if we wanted.
-
Just make sure you do your taxes before Monday the 16th ;D
-
I'd like to make a suggestion for future meet-ups. Since we have several different areas represented, why don't we have a local "host"? What I mean is someone from the area would plan that meet. For example, if we were meeting in my area, I would best know good places to eat, visit, etc. Maybe even come up with a few interesting facts about the area. (There is an old homestead near me that is supposedly haunted & local legend has it that there is a Big Foot type creature somewhere around my house! Never encountered either personally so can't say if its true. :rofl; ) Does that sound like a good idea? What are your thoughts?
-
I've offered to do that, but I don't know if anyone is really interested in St. Charles/Geneva! Doesn't sound like it! :P It's not as exciting as Chicago. I don't know if people want to drive a long way to visit St. Charles. LOL!
-

I would! Isn't Pheasant Run in St Charles? Pretty place. Wasn't Ulysses Grant somehow connected to Geneva? (yes, I'm a history geek!) I'll come visit you, even if no one else wants to!
-
If we do the 15th, I will have to bow out of the event as that is Eastern Orthodox Easter and I will be with my husband's family that day.
However, if that is the consensus, I will turn over the planning reins to someone else. Personally, I was hoping for either April 22nd or April 29th. The weather would be better, early April is still dicey.
Please do not worry about me in your decision - if the group decides that the 15th will work for them, I will raise a glass to you while I am having Easter with my ILs.
-
OK, so we've got two Easters, dialysis Saturdays and spring break to take into consideration. I am out of ideas. I'd suggest that the people who have constraints chime in and make a suggestion as to which day we meet.
-
Some of the constraints I have read are on the other thread regarding the poll of places to meet. This is where merging the two topics is needed. jbeany has something with school on some date or is that rsudock ???
-
I would LOVE to be able to go to a meet up.... I haven't been able to go to one yet. :(
I live in Iowa, so that's what... 350 miles? Maybe with enough notice I can do it. I really hope so!
Angie <3
-
Most everything that I have planned can be rescheduled, so pick a date! Maybe we should go for May instead. Doesn't matter to me.
-
Best idea. just set a date and do it. those that can come, show up. Those who have other obligations, stay home. Other wise you will talk all year and never meet.
-
Talking is good, or so they say :rofl;
March? no big holiday's on the weekend I can think of since St Patrick's Day is during the week I think. I agree, let's just pick a date and be done with that part atleast. then can plan what month to choose to go to be trained to use a guide dog (a month long class).
-
Isnt the "Al Capone's speakeasy" in st charles too? i remember it being ridiculously priced but still pretty cool!
I like the idea of the local host mentioned, do something like every 6 mos or somethng like that! theres lots of neat little places all over illinois.
-
I think Kitkat has the right idea. Let the two or three closest to the meet location work out a time and place, and then post it. Those of us who can make it will. I think you have enough input at this point to determine what will work for the majority.
-
Well, here goes. Since I started this, I guess I might as well keep soldiering on.
Date: Sunday, April 29th
Place: Copper Fox Cafe, 305 West Main Street, St. Charles, IL
Time: 12:00 Noon
Please reply here by Sunday, April 8th to indicate if you can attend and how many people will be coming with you. They do have a party room so I am hoping that we might be able to get that if we have enough people.
-
That didn't work. Please ignore this post.
-
I adore the Copper Fox Cafe!!! As a matter of fact I was just coming online to suggest this very place! Furthermore, my husband and I are going there for dinner next week to celebrate our anniversary.
The two of us will be there. As I am so closeby, let me know if I can help with any arrangements; PM me anytime!
-
A little early for me to know if I can be there. If I can I will. Maybe I can let you know sooner to the date.
-
OK, I'm in!
As long as they have coffee, I'm good! :rofl;
-
Okay, I need travel advice from someone familiar with the train system around Chicago. What I've found online says that the train from Grand Rapids arrives at Union Station at 10:30. The Metro train from Olgilvie to Geneva, which appears to be the nearest stop to St. Joseph, runs at 10:40. I'm guessing there's zero chance I can make it from Union to Olgilvie on time, even if, in theory, it's a 5 minute walk. I've never been to Chicago and never ridden the trains, so I'm bound to get turned around and lost for a few minutes, even if I arrive on time in the first place. The next train to Geneva appears to be at 11:45. How long will it take to get from Olgilvie to Geneva? And is St. Joseph in walking distance from Geneva? Would I need a taxi at that point?
After all that - I still don't know if it will be practical for me to go at all, but I'm quite sure I'm not up to the 5 hour drive there, plus the same back again, all in one day with what I hope is work the next morning to go to. (And if I do have a job by then, it will be far to early for me to be requesting days off already.)
-
Take the train from Union Station to Naperville and I'll meet you there. That is the easiest way for you, just a walk around the corner (Inside the building). Or I can meet you downtown and take train back together. I can meet you at the Metra Cafe, or upstairs in the bar area by pizza hut.
-
Ogilvie to Geneva (the penultimate stop on the line to Elburn) is about 1 hr 10 minutes. If you decide to take the train all the way to Geneva, you can either get a taxi from there or you can just phone me, and I can come get you. I am about a 2 minute drive from the station.
-
Also if you want to take the train from Ogalvie, go upstairs from Union Station to the Adams Street exit, cabs are always there, or there is bus 157 at the Canal Street exit that stops at Ogalvie, trouble is timing.
-
i probably will have to pass this time around, as that is my bfs bday!!
but i do plan on going to chicago sometime during summer break, with my son, so if anyone would want to meet up then as well, ill eventually figure out my plans, and let yall know :)
-

Bring him with you! :thumbup;
I'd love to meet up with you and your son this summer! That'd be terrific!
-
I am glad you all have planned a meet up and hope you'll post photos! I wish I could be there but will be in spirit. Each meeting with IHD members is a special memory for me. Have a great time!

I'm lost already! It's good to know I can catch a ride from someone, though. At any rate, if I can go, I'll get together with one of you and work out some travel plans a couple weeks ahead of time. The 29th is the weekend AFTER exams, so I at least won't have to worry about studying!
-
well ill definitely ask him if hed like to do that!
-
i want to come. let me look into arrangements from denver and i'll get back to you.
-
You might want to add the April 8th deadline to RSVP to the title of this thread, so anyone thinking of joining us later knows how long they have to decide.
-
Thanks jbeany!
I have also added the current list of attendees to the initial post and will continue to update as RSVPs come rolling in. :2thumbsup;
-
I looked up address and a website.
Copper Fox Restaurant 305 West Main Street, St. Charles, IL (630) 945-3435 () · copperfoxcafe.com
-
OK, definitely know where this is at since I looked up map. Just forgot that Main Street is Route 64/ Butterfield Road. Now just have to figure out how to send to cars gps from Google.
-
Good Grief I have a lot to catch up on....
Moosemom what is this map you speak of?? :)
Anyway so are we eliminating April 15, 6, or 7 as a possbile date then? I know the week I picked sucks b/c it's Easter but I will bring chocolate bunnies....
xo,
R
-
The date has been set for April 29th (Sunday). We decided to eliminate Saturdays for those in-center and also wanted to avoid Easters (both Western Christian and Eastern Orthodox). Hope you can make it!! :2thumbsup;

Fantastic!!! I'm so glad your husband is interested in coming, too.
-
sorry to ask this on this thread, but it involves this so...
would it be rude of me to ask my bf to do this on his bday?? i feel like it would be rude... ?
-
why would it be rude? You can always celebrate his birthday on another day or later in the day. We won't be partying all day (or will we?) :yahoo;
-
Awesome! I have added you to the list of attendees. :clap;
I will definitely be there with my husband. So excited, can't wait!
-
We looked it up and we are going N on 47 to 64 then heading E. My husband is familiar with the area; one of the bakeries his company services is in that area.
-
sorry to ask this on this thread, but it involves this so...
would it be rude of me to ask my bf to do this on his bday?? i feel like it would be rude... ?
Why not celebrate the b-day with a whole day in Chicago, with just a stop off for lunch with the IHD crowd? Surely there's something he'd like to do that evening in such a big town for his birthday as well?
-
Took awhile with tech support from Ford :stressed; but finally was able to get Google and Mapquest maps sent to my car. What a pain technology is when they make a mistake. There shouldn't be 3 different websites associated with functioning all these new tech gadgets on ones car, one website is all that should be needed :banghead;
So I'm set as long as I wake up in time.
-
sorry to ask this on this thread, but it involves this so...

Tell him we will make a big fuss over him! LOL! Seriously, if he were to accompany you, we would know that he was kind and supportive of you, and we would take extra pains to make him feel special. This meet up is not just for IHD members but also for the partners who mean so much to us and work so hard to make us happy despite all of this crap.
-
if i decide i can come, what airport do i fly into? is there even more than 1? can i get to the meet location conveniently or should i just skip it and save for vegas?
-
You could either fly into O'Hare or Midway. From Denver, I would suggest O'Hare. It is also closer to the meet location than Midway. As far as convenience, it's not terribly close. You would need to rent a car. There are hotels very close to the meetup site - St. Charles/Geneva are beautiful small towns around the Fox River.

There is a train system that can take you to Union Station and possibly Ogalvie train station. I see them advertise that option when I take the train at Union station, but do not know the route or if there is a transfer. I will be going back to Chicago next week and if I'm not running late (last two times I have), I will look at the wall display so I can look it up.
-
While in Chicago today Ipicked up a schedule for transit from O'Hare airport to Union Station and Amtrack information from Southern Illinois and oter stops. Some drop you off in Naperville which is closer to the meeting point. I will have to look at them later tonight after I rest for a bit, I just got home.

Always a great time when IHD'ers meet up. It will be fabulous!

can't wait to meet you all!!

-
I'd love to join in on any activities you'd like to do on Friday and/or Saturday! We have a bit of time to plan, so be thinking about what sort of things you'd like to do.
-
I'm taking vacation on Friday so count me in too!
-
If y'all would like, my house can be designated IHD par-tay central. Everyone can meet up here on Friday, say around lunchtime, and we can all go out for lunch or something. There are two parks within walking distance of my house, so we could even pick up some sandwiches and drinks and go have a picnic by the river...that would be cheap and cheerful. And there are plenty of fun restaurants around for a casual lunch, or if the weather is bad, maybe we could have a movie afternoon or something. I have Netflix, so I could order us some movies, and we could have snacks and movies at my house. Geneva and St. Charles both have interesting little shops if y'all are in the mood for that sort of thing.
-
I must be kept away from the yarn stores at all costs!!! :bandance;
-
I will be downtown Friday for morning doctor appointment, so f you plan to come to the City I can meet you at Navy Pier, Sears Tower , Hancock, Millenium Park.
-
:2thumbsup; Have fun! Take photos! :pics;

Friday sounds fun!

Moosemom, I thought you might have mentioned Pheasant Run Inn.

Moosemom, I thought you might have mentioned Pheasant Run Inn.
That's a little bit further away from both my house and The Copper Fox. But sure, if you want a resort environment, Pheasant Run is lovely, particularly if you want to play golf.
-
If I play and win the lotto tonight, then we will have the meet there :rofl; Spare no expence!
I thought there was a Holiday Inn Express across the street from there, but it's been awhile since I was up there to remember right.

I know where you are talking about; I think that is a Hilton Inn. The Holiday Inn Express is a bit closer to the river. There are plenty of places to stay in St. charles; I just picked the three places closest to the Copper Fox.

I may be able to join up with you all on the Friday depending on how it is to be timed and where it will take place.

If anyone is still interested that did not RSVP, we can certainly add on, just let me know!
Looking forward to it!! :bandance; :bandance;

:clap; I love that you'll get to meet!
-
I still plan to go, just on a very low budget due to recent trip with unexpected expences.
-
One thing we did after the last Chicago meet was to see "Tommy Gun's Garage Dinner Theater". It is a bit pricey at $60 to $70 per person depending on the night, but the food was fabulous, vastly better than one might expect for dinner/theater. I had the prime rib and my sister had the pork chops, and there is also salmon, chicken and lasagna. The show was excellent (and interactive!). Gangsters and Chicago, it was part of the experience! There is a $5 discount coupon for the show at their website - www.tommygunsgarage.com.
Have fun everybody!!!
:cheer:
-
Due to finances, I will not be able to attend. Sorry, this month has just not gone right.
-
Are we all still on for the weekend? It's almost here! Can we have a final headcount? Is there anything I can do to help anyone out?
I'll be attending along with my husband.
-
We want to see lots of pictures! I love putting a face with a screen name. I am very excited for all of you. :2thumbsup;

I will be coming, albeit possibly a little early depending on traffic and time I leave.
-
Have fun everyone! I'm saving every penny now for my new place, so all travel plans have been grounded indefinitely. Maybe next year!
-
Chris, if you arrive early, give me a call and we will come and meet you since we're just 2 minutes from Copper Fox.
Jbeany, we'll forgive you for missing the meetup if and only if you promise to post some pics of your new home...the Jbeany Jar!
-
If early, can always watch a movie in my car.
I am hoping I do not sleep in late tho like do usually on Sunday.

Yes - lots of photos please!

LOL...I'm sure you have an alarm clock! Just get your butt out of bed. :P
You can watch a movie in your car if you really want to, but really, I'm just down the road, and there's no reason for you to have to sit in your car until noon. Just call me, and I can be there in 5 minutes. We can have a drink or coffee while awaiting for the rest of the crowd to arrive.
-
I haven't been here in a while and was just checking to make sure the Meet was still on. My husband and I are looking forward to it. :waving;

Yay!

I forgot, there is an all bird pet store close to the restaurant. Catch theb bird flu before coming in.....lol
That's if it is still there. They usually have young macaws,, covkatoos, and parrots out to be petted.

I must be kept away from the yarn stores at all costs!!! :bandance;
Be strong! I also must restrain myself! :rofl;

Cattlekid here:
We are set for Sunday! The reservation has been made for 12 individuals at 12 noon. I have been perusing the menu on and off for a while, so many tasty things to try.
A couple of favors to ask:
1. Does anyone have any name tags or stickers that could be used as nametags? I do have some Sharpies that I can bring. I would just hate to go out and buy some if someone has a few laying around the house.
2. If you have your camera handy, please feel free to bring it. I'll bring our little one but since DH is not coming and he's the shutterbug, I tend to forget to take pictures!!!
As far as the rest of the weekend, I'm booked up Saturday but if anyone is interested in getting together on Friday or even Monday (I'm on vaca until next week Wednesday! Woot!) just let me know.
I'm getting excited!!! :bandance;
-
Cattlekid, I do have address labels that are big (2" X 4") that I can type up all the names on my computer if I have the names.
-
Chris, thank you so much for your offer. :clap;
ALL ATTENDING: Please get your names to Chris. I assume we will want real names, not screen names (or both). Either post here or PM Chris if you would prefer not to have your real name posted.
-
Use both screen name and real name. It will help with connecting. My :twocents; :rofl;
Have a marvelous meet up. I can't wait to hear about it and see pictures. :2thumbsup;
-
Yes, both names. I can ft both names on the tag. I can make the screen name larger than the real name to make t easier or both the same size. I can also add your avitar to the name tag if you like. I have software to capture the screen photo, so you do not need to send me that.
-
im sorry that I cant make it, with the move I am up to my ears in boxes, and pretty much broke for the rest of this month lol
hopefully next time!!
Have a wonderful time, everyone!
I do plan on making a family trip sometime this summer, maybe we can make it chicago area... :)
-
Gonna need a final head count in order to make name tag labels by Saturday night. Also how you want your real name on the name tags. Just pm me the information. I have 4 names so far.
-
I have got some news! :cheer: I'll tell you tomorrow!! :clap;

Hey friends I am sitting at the holiday inn....Neil is running a 101.5 fever :( I know he is trying to hang on for me because I am so excited to see you all, but he is feeling bad...I may just pop in to say hello, just depends how bad he is in the AM. I thought at first he over did it today at the museum with the fake hip and all but he is feeling worse...gosh I hate this....

OH no... I have been waiting for you to call me since yesterday, and I have been really worried about you. You have my phone number, so let me know if I can help.

Ps did you get my reply to your email?

I personally find these meet-ups to be the one most effective thing that helps me cope with this disease. I've only been to two...last year in LV and just today here in Chicagoland, but I've derived so much pleasure from meeting other people who have been so supportive over the years.
I had such a nice time meeting everyone and was frankly surprised to see so many people show up. We were twelve in number, and it was all really great except for the fact that the restaurant apparently had never taken note of our reservation. Cattlekid had arranged everything with the OWNER, no less, and she was the first to arrive, only to find out there was no table reserved for us. ::) But we're kidney patients and are used to people not doing what they're supposed to be doing for our wellbeing and quality of life, lol, so we just sat and talked until our table was finally ready.
Rsudock, her brother and her best friend had driven all the way from Ohio just to come and see us, and her poor brother wasn't feeling well but STILL came along, and the three of them were just such fun to be with. As much as it pains me to see young people afflicted with kidney disease, it was great fun having them around to liven up the party. Barb must be such a great friend to Rachel and Neil, and I am really grateful to her for being a friend to our IHD friends.
Cattlekid's no-nonsense approach to home dialysis gave me a very good idea of what I will need to do for myself once I start D. She mirrors a similar approach as do our other IHD home hemo people. It was wonderful for my sanity to be able to spend time with her.
Once again, Chris dodged Chicagoland traffic to join, and I appreciate that because there is just no way I would drive by myself to where he lives! And you should see our nametags that he made for us! They're so cool! I've stuck mine on the front of the notebook I will be taking to my pre-eval appt in Madison so that I will remember all of the IHD support I've received over the years. I'm grateful.
CebuShan had some special news! She had cannulated herself for the first time since starting D in her clinic! Isn't that terrific!? She has every right to be proud. I'm very admiring of her husband who very politely listened to all of our yucky medical talk. LOL!
MrB123, his wife and his son were also there, and it was terrific to get to meet one of our newer members. That his family accompanied him was nice, too; I like seeing family members get involved; it shows support that is so important. MrB is another pre-dialysis patient, and being one myself, I appreciated the opportunity to hear more of his story. MrB, I hope it is a VERY long time before you ever have to see a dialysis machine!
Anyway, thank you all again for taking the time and trouble to meet up. I find that I am becoming more and more of a recluse; I didn't used to be this way, and I sometimes have to force myself to leave my house or to talk to another human. It just seems so enervating, and all too often it is easier to merely keep to myself. That's not really good for my emotional wellbeing, so thank you all for being part of my "cure".
:grouphug;

Thanks for the report - sounds great - so happy you all go to meet. :2thumbsup; :2thumbsup; :2thumbsup;

Hello all!
Thanks to everyone who attended our meetup and again I am very sorry for the mix-up with the reservation! I learned another valuable lesson today = double check everything!!! Of course, being a dialysis patient I should have known that already!!!!
Thanks to rsudock, Neil and Barb for coming all the way from Akron and thanks to Chris for the nametags.
A special thanks to MooseMom for her generosity!!!!!
Hopefully, by the next time we all get together, CebuShan, MM and I will all have our cheesehead kidneys!!!! :bandance;
-
Just got home from the meet, but I do not have pictures to post since I did not take any. It was nice to talk with cattlekid since we knew a few of tue d9fferejt towns ins and outs. MooseMom and her husband were great, they took those of us who didn't have to leave to a chocolate shop that had very very good coffee that I have never seen brewed that way. It dates back to the 1800's. CebuShan and I knew a couple of each others doctors and had a couple laughs about that. rsudock gave an explanation of her screen name, so now I know and understand. MrB123 was nice to meet and unexpected, so sorry I did not make a nametag. It was a good time, even tho there was seafood served and the good news is that rsudock's hair did not catch on fire from the cheese! :rofl; :2thumbsup;
Nametag 2.0 is in the works, came up with a redesign idea in the morning after I printed them last night. So if I have the finances to go to Vegas, I can use that template.
Dd I mention the Chocolate store? ;D :rofl; :rofl;
-
I definitely want to go back to the chocolate shop if only for the fancy coffee! I have a feeling I will be up all night but worth it since I am still on vacation from work until Wednesday. ;D
-

Me too since I usually only drink decaf coffee because of transplant centers protocol. However want to go back for the coffee, the chocolate, and GELATO! Although Naperville may still have the gelato place on Ogden Ave, it doesn't have the other two.

As Epoman would say = TTIWWP (This thread is worthless without photos)
:pics; :pics; :pics;
Anyone?
-
Rachel took some photos, so maybe she will post them once she gets back to Ohio.
"Cheesehead kidneys"...that would be so funny.
-
Chris and MM - anytime you guys want to get together, just drop me a line! And MM don't forget you still have to come by and see my setup for NxStage. Depending on the day I may even make us a renal-friendly dinner. :2thumbsup;
-
I thought someone else (possibly MrB) took some pictures too. I know group phot was taken by rsudock's friend and she mentioned she had to go to walmart to get them developed.
Well August would be good, I'll have my guide dog. Chocolate shop will be a must if we meet up there or Chicago?
Sorry, I dropped the ball on taken pictures. Had camera with, but got to involved talking to people. ;D
-
What a great afternoon! It was so nice to finally put faces to names. Jim and I are still so full, we didn't eat dinner! :rofl; MM, the Chocolate Kitchen was amazing! Thank you so much! :thx; We definitely have to do this again! "Cheesehead Kidneys" what an awesome thought! :clap; Chris, the nametags were great. I've got ours here by the computer. As soon as we can get copies of the photos, I'll put them together in a frame. RSudock, hope Neil is feeling better soon. Have a safe trip home. Loved meeting you and your family, MrB123. Cattlekid, what can I say? Thank you so much for starting this whole thing! When's the next one? :rofl; P.S. I loved hearing where everyone's screen names came from! Great stories, especially Chris'!! :rofl; :rofl; :rofl;

OK, I have to go back to the Chocolate Shop after looking at their website! Apparently I missed a chocolate dinosaur there.

Surprisingly the coffee did not keep me up or make heart race...........and that is a good thing.

Me neither! I wonder if it has something to do with the way the coffee was brewed.

I am not sure, but I'm sure it's not the sze of the coffee grounds. Keurig coffee was not the same today, just didn't hit the spot :rofl;

Oh dear, Chris...I think you're spoiled, now!

Two Christmases ago, we were walking down 3rd street in Geneva and came upon this chocolate shop that was clearly just in temporary premises. We got to talking to the owners, who happened to be Chef Roby and his wife, Esther. They said that they were thinking about opening a permanent shop but were for now just seeing what the foot traffic was like. They had the dinosaur complete with dino egg, along with Neil Armstrong and the Blackhawk's player.
A few months later, I happened to be walking down the same street and saw some construction and a new sign in the shop where they are now, and I assumed it was decided that they'd have a permanent shop. In the year that has passed, they've added new things to the menu and have also put in more tables, so I think they might have moved the dinosaur. However, there is a block of shops attached to Chef Roby's whose owner has retired, and the shop immediately next to the chocolate shop is being rented by Chef Roby; they'll knock down the adjoining wall and expand, so maybe we'll see the dinosaur return.
All of you will have to come back in the summer because they've just added the classic Vietnamese coffee that is so popular in that country. We were guinea pigs for it, and it was really good despite the fact that I am SO NOT a fan of iced coffee.
-
It was good to meet you all, my family and I had a great time. Sorry we had to leave early, but we got my son check out of his college dorm just in time.
rusdock it was great you could make it, you need an award for driving so far just to have lunch, hope you had a good time, it was good to meet you and you traveling companions.
cattlekid thank you :thx; for setting this up, we should plan another event for the near future. Also thanks for sharing about Nexstage, after talking with you about it, when the time comes I want to go with that!
Chris no problem about the name tags, I missed the post about sending the information to you.
CebuShan and Jim good to meet you, and I hope all goes well with your treatment.
MooseMom I will say it again, you look just like I pictured you would look. Mrs. B said you and Mike look familiar, she went to high school in Elgin and lived and worked there before we were married many years ago, maybe you crossed paths at some time?
Again it was great to meet you all and I look forward to another lunch/dinner soon!
Here is a link to the pictures I took on my flickr account, sorry I missed the chocolate shop sounded good!

MrB, thanks so much for posting the photos; they're brilliant! Anytime you are back down this way, let us know so that we could meet up again. As you know, we go to Rockford from time to time to go to the arboretum and Anderson Garden, so maybe you could join us some time. That would be really nice.
-
Yes let me know when you might be in Rockford, it would be great to do lunch and maybe go to the gardens with you and Mike. I was telling Mike about Severson Dells. Mrs. B and I go there a lot nice place for a easy nature walk, blacktop paths on most of it and they have a lodge there to visit and see some of the things to look for on your walk. e-mail me when you are heading this way and we will try to meet up!

Great photos, MrB! Thanks!

I use prish resizing tool that is free, simple to use, and similar to what Windows offered in XP. I posted a link awhile back in a different thread about image resizing that I can post a link to when I am on my pc later.
-
Here are a couple of post I have replied to regarding picture size posting and how to post:
Resizing picture
Depends what OS you have Texas. If you have Windows 7 or Vista, the above image resizer will give problems since it is for XP. This was a major complaint on Microsoft's Tech board forum. I still wonder why they did not put it back on Vista or 7. So there are two free programs to download that offer the same flexability as the PowerToy Resizer for XP. One is called Prish Image Resizer and the other is called VSO Image resizer. For Apple OS, I do not know.
Prish download: http://download.cnet.com/Prish-Image-Resizer/3000-2192_4-75180364.html (http://download.cnet.com/Prish-Image-Resizer/3000-2192_4-75180364.html)
And How To Post a picture:
But to post a picture (size in the 600 range, medium on some resizing programs best for all to easily see and load on other computers), go down to Additional Options and click on that. Then Look for Attach: and to the right of that is the Browse button. Click on that and search your computer to where the picture is located you want to post. Double click on that picture, add some text to the post and click on Post. If you click on Spell Check first, you will have to reload picture again and then click on Post.
Hope that is what you are looking for.
Hope this hels rsudock
