Hi I was just wondering what hobbies if any people had, since being diagnosed my wife and I have, got an allotment and started growing our own veg, Ive started making my own wine :wine;.
my wife has started making her own jewelery and I have bought a metal detector and I am just waiting for some good weather before going on my first treasure hunt.
I sure as hell don't have the kind of energy to hold down the jobs I used to do, so hobbies kind of fill the gap.
So has anyone got any hobbies? thinking of starting any ?

Ive been into radio control airplanes and trucks for many years now. It takes lots of energy and concentration to enjoy these hobbies, which I didn't have due to beginning stages of kidney failure. This year I plan on getting back into it, here is a picture of one of my trucks, also in the background a wing from one of my airplanes. (that wing is 6 feet long BTW)

Wow, Id love to play with those toys >:D.
I saw one of those giant planes being flown on TV, they're really expensive apparently.. looks like a great hobby :beer1;

Initially it is quite expensive but maintenance isn't to bad.

I guess for the last 18 months my hobby has been IHD and the sister-sites. :P

Hi I was just wondering what hobbies if any people had, since being diagnosed my wife and I have, got an allotment and started growing our own veg, Ive started making my own wine :wine;.
You must be English if you have an "allotment"!
I moved to the UK in 1985, and when we bought our house the next year, I was confronted with maintaining the first garden I'd ever had. I had never been into gardening, and having been born and raised in Texas didn't prepare me for gardening in England. But I grew to love it, and truth be told, my garden is the one thing I miss the most about my life in Surrey. Before I left, I took a whole role of pictures of it, and those pics are one of my most treasured possessions.
I now live in the Upper Midwest, and gardening here is so different. I had SO wanted to recreate an "English Country Garden", but its just so difficult since the summers and winters are both so severe. My back garden is more forest than grass (which is rather nice in itself), so I've planted over 600 English bluebells. Unfortunately, the first 300 never flowered, so under the terms of the nursery's guarantee, I got 300 more for free which I planted last autumn. I don't know if any of them will EVER bloom, but I tried.
I like growing herbs; I've got lots of thyme and English lavender. I'm still learning how to garden in this part of the world.
I also like reading. I'm currently reading "Suite Francaise". Whenever a gift-giving holiday comes around, I always ask for books. I've got tons of books yet to read.
-
I've been into so many crafts & disliked only one, quilting & that was probably because I didn't like the teacher.
My two favorites were sewing & stained glass & maybe jewelry making too, I did like that a lot.
Then about 7 years ago I started selling on eBay & the hobbies stopped & eBay took over. I'll list about 100 auctions & when they close I'll wait a week or two & list again. So I guess eBay is my current hobbie.
-
Hi moosemom, I live in surrey, if there is anything english and in bulb or seed form, maybe I could send you some, I don't like england but I like English country side and gardens......
yes epoman, it does seem to be a very successful hobby.

I guess my hobby is also IHD. Anything a person spends a couple of hours a day doing must meet the definition of a "hobby."
Before Christmas I was knitting hats and slippers but I haven't touched a piece of yarn in a month.
My two dogs keep me busy.
Trying to sell my house keeps me busy because I have to keep it clean just in case someone wants to see it.
And, I keep punching away at typing my Father's letters to my Mother during WWII.

This is so true, but, you have to keep in mind when that plane bites the dust, or the truck, sometimes you have to start from scratch. Not a matter of "IF", but when ;D

Well lets see how bout these computer things. Like building, configuring, upgrading, and generally playing with them. We've come a long way since the VIC 20. Building networks is fun as is experimenting with wifi. Ever war drive the I5 from LA to San Francisco? Ham radio is also a neat hobby that I've been into for about 37 years now...too long. Oh another fun thing that is almost a hobby is planning trips and obsessing over the absolute best deal when doing that. If it isn't cheap why bother?
-
I remember the older planes never landed safely you had to rebuild them almost after every landing.
-
I think the only hobby i have is collecting movies, that is the only reason i buy the sunday paper, to see what deals are out there on DVD's :P

War driving huh? Let me guess you have built a wi-fi booster out of a "Pringles" can AND you read 2600 (the magazine) :thumbup;

I have spent a billion hours the last 4 years learning all about kidneys and dialysis and transplants
but it's not a very relaxing way to spend time. My hobby is photography. I hope to have more time
for it. Here are a couple photos I took. I hope they are the right size!

okaral great pics :2thumbsup; where was the top one taken, looks like an amazing place to go metal detecting, obviously not in the grave yard itself.... :o

Graveyard is Taos Pueblo, Taos, New Mexico. Sunflower is in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
The lighting seems so magical in that part of the country. Thanks.

I like the graveyard picture.

I like the graveyard picture.
Yeah it is rather cool. It looks like one you would see in a movie.

Im DYING for this weather to break, and want to get back into flying again this year. Bad part is that the planes I have are "advanced" flying, and since ive been out of the groove for the past 2 years, I need to buy a plane thats just a little bit "slower". This plane is what will get the job done. Its a Golberg Models Decathalon

okarol, I love those pictures!
I have two dogs and five cats who keep me busy. If I'm not trying to tire out my ADHD dachshund, I'm cleaning up after them. My house is in serious need of decorating and my little landscaped area always needs the weeds pulled and things divided and moved.
I think those are mostly to-do tasks though! For hobbies, I walk and am starting to slowly ramp up to walk my fourth marathon next fall, and I cross-stitch in front of the tv.
-
JP that is an outstanding looking Plane.
-
Okarol, i love the pics, do you have any more that you wouldn't mind sharing? Or do you have a website we can go and look at them? Very nice pics indeed :2thumbsup;

Thanks Goofynina! I have posted a few on myspace (click on pics.) Please post comments if you'd like. http://www.myspace.com/okarol
Spending the last few weeks in La Jolla was wonderful for me because I took a ton of photos.
I will post more when I have time to go through them.

i've always been a very "crafty lady" for years i made many differient things and sold them at local fairs. i've done counted cross stitch, needle point and quilted. most recently i crochet baby blankets for a maternity home. this year i'm thinking of doing hats for the children's hospital, as they have a "hat tree" my daughter says i'm obsessed with yarn. i also read quite a bit.

My hobby is playing musical instruments (Guitar or Keyboard) Played in various local bands from 1965 to 2001 (one nearly successful in 1970, missed out on a record deal through musical differences within the band). It became more of a hobby after 2001 by which time I'd decided I couldn't be arsed lugging heavy speaker cabs and amp equipement to and from gigs. Nowadays I have I little bedroom studio where I write and record my own songs and once a year I play in a musical production staged by a local amateur dramatics group. Last year we did Jesus Christ Superstar and this year we are doing a production of Eight Miles High which is set in the summer of 69....BRING IT ON..... I get to play Hendrix's Voodo Chile!
For any guitar enthusiasts on the site I play a USA Fender Strat.+ and a 1979 Gibson Les Paul Standard.
-
Those are a couple of bitchen axes!!! I'd really like to hear you plat that Voodoo Chile!!! Hendrix man, my god he was amazing! I have the purple box set of his and I listen to it all of the time. Always imitated but never duplicated. He is one of my heroes. Best wishes with your performance!

We really enjoy gardening - flowers, shrubs, veggies. I have 5 big flower beds now-one has a little pond with a fountain. We grew potatoes, carrots and onions this year. We have apple trees, pear trees,a cherry tree. Lots of maples! Hubby is realy into carpentry and wood working. He has built 2 boats since he's been on dialysis. He makes wooden trays with a lazy susan on them to put on your table, he made our bed, and a table for the sunroom as well as lots of other things. Even though he doesn't work anymore he is still always busy. He good at fixing things around the house. He enjoys spending time in his garage peddling around at different stuff.We can't wait to see the first flower come out in bloom. Everything is under about 3 feet of snow now. I would much rather mow the lawns than clean up snow. I will post some pitures of the flowers when they bloom. We also enjoy walking and doing outside things. Maybe the ones who like gardening can post pictures of their garden when it is in bloom.

I have so many hobbies, that I can't really do justice to them all. My current primary hobbies revolve around motorcycles. I enjoy riding, customizing, painting, & light repair work. I also enjoy fishing, gardening, and playing pool. I've given up many hobbies for lack of time.

Genealogy is a hobby of mine, I really enjoy it and it's like a mystery while you're looking through your sources. I've done my family history. On my father side someone on his side of the family has traced them from the 1200's in England. They eventually immigrated in the 1600's to Americas to Connecticutt. I've had ancesters in every single US war since the Revolutionary War. It's very interesting!

I also enjoy genealogy - haven't had as much time to devote as I used to, but it's great because you can always pick up where you left off. I found my revolutionary war ancestor and my husband's civil war ancestor - as well as tracing our families back to 1600's in PA and NY.
-
Forgot our main hobby - wine and beer making. :wine; :beer1; We don't use those kits where you just add water we use real berries and fruit. We usually pick our own berries and get our fruit locally - what grows naturally here. I aso enjoy geneology. I have most of my family tree done but have run into a few snags that I haven't really had time to work on.
-
Watch out for those snags in the geneology stuff. I have a friend who discovered her great- grandmother was African American. It was a shock for her knowing how her family was so prejudiced now. They would not speak to her because she had married an African American. Seems the tables turned there a bit.
-
My mom did genealogy as well. There were a lot of people up here just as prejudiced about being native American. They didn't want to admit it - at least until the casinos arrived. Then there was a mad scramble to prove they were part of a tribe so they could cash in. . . . :P
My mom found lots of interesting family stories, like the Raven branch of the family. The original Raven was a British soldier during the Revolutionary war. He was wounded in a battle, nursed back to health by the family who owned the farm that was the scene of the battle. He married the farmer's daughter and never went back to England. Depending on which side of the family you ask, how he was conscripted into the British Army has two different versions. One states that he was standing on his back stoop in his stocking feet and was conscripted at gunpoint and ordered aboard a navy ship headed for America. The other side of the family claims he woke up barefoot from a sound drunk on board a ship already at sea. The only point the two versions agree on is that he arrived without shoes!

OMG Joe Paul, that is beautiful! ! ! When I was younger my dad was really into RC cars. He built so many....tanks, subs, truck, cars and monster trucks. I have a few...a 1954 Ford Coupe. Actually I bought the body, painted it and stuck it on the frame. LOL.....Now my dad is building a huge ass tank. It has laser sensors and him and his buds play "war games" with them. What I really would like is a helicopter....gas of course. I havent used my RC cars in a long time, just dont know any1 here that is into that sorta thing. I'd like to get back into it.
-
Thanks Tubes, but that isnt my plane. I ordered the same plane though, and will be picking it up this afternoon, after dialysis. Im going to post pictures when I get her home, what it looks like out of the box, and some pictures when I get her done. Cars are fun too, I have a couple of mine up for sale now, need funds to complete the plane. Here is a picture of the 2 up for sale.
-
Joe Paul - What are the details of your sale items? I have been thinking about picking up a new hobby. There is nothing like motorcycling but that can be pretty expensive at $300 each time out, if nothing goes wrong of course. I think you have an LST there?. I have also recently heard of mini and micro versions that interest me. Would you happen to know anything about them? What do you think I would need to get started? How much needs to be invested (if you want to call it that.)?
I have also been toying around with building some plastic models. I would like to build the Honda Repsol moto gp bike, a Ferrari or two, and a Peterbuilt for a friend of mine. Does anyone have advice on what it takes to accomplish successful builds? What tools do I need, paints, how much $ aside from the model is needed? Maybe a parts list of some kind with tools and equipment would be helpful. My only experience with models is from when I was a kid doing skill level 2 or 3 I think. What kind of painting technique do you recommend? Airbrush?
Okarol - Those are really great pics. I have always had a fondness for photography but not very successful with it. Thats awesome!

George, I answered your questions in a PM so as not to hi-jack this thread.
In the meantime, here is what my plane looks like out of the box:

I don't think I posted these photos yet, I took them in La Jolla, Ca. during transplant weeks.
I wish I had more time to take photos and edit them!

I'm impressed with everyone's hobbies! I don't really have one, I read a lot, and try to collect favorite authors.
When I feel well, I cook for the guys, which they appreciate! What else. I collect stuff. Churches, angels,
sheep, and now cows.
-
I like building computers, modding them, rapping about games, star wars and stuff cuz I'ma Geeksta^^. gaming at LAN Party and doing big no nos for dialysis patients eating pizza and drinking coke. Watching Movies and thinking of ways to make this world better. thats all of my hobbies pretty much

I bought a Team Losi Mini LST yesterday. Very cool little truck out of the box! It did burn up diff gears one the third run. I was aware of this problem and so I have a metal assembly on the way. Thinking about motor ESC combos and battery type? I can tell this thing is going to be fun!
thanks for the help Joe Paul.

well, one of my hobbies has just reached its goal, four gallons of homemade wine, have just been bottled and doesn't taste bad either, although I'll have to drink it over a long period, due to a not so off topic reason.....
its great to hear about everyones hobbies..

Mamba 25 ESC / Hyperion 6k, and lipo battery system still to come. Also looking to replace shock towers, stock wheels and tires, and upgrade shocks and springs. Thinking about a Specktrum radio also?

Nice photos. I forgot about my photo hobby. I was a certified professional photographer several years ago, and owned my own portrait studio. I worked a full time night job and ran my studio during the day, and weekends. After about 6 years, I just wore out. I would have loved to quit my job, and just ran my studio, but building up the business took all my savings. If I would have had some savings, I could have done it. Of course, being self employed, I would not have had benefits like my other job provided. I decided to sell my studio. I didn't even keep a camera, and didn't want one. People were always asking me to shoot things for them, and I simply told them that I didn't even own a camera. It's been long enough that it's safe for me to own one now, and I'm getting back into photography as a hobby now. I hope to get many pictures of my motorcycle travels this summer.
-
There is something about photography that makes me love it. Maybe it's capturing a moment in time or just the art of it? The new series on Discovery Channel is a great example, simply fantastic!
-
Just a reminder the pictures need to be 640 x 480 not any larger.

Not long now until I play guitar and keyboard in the Musical '8 Miles High. It's about a group of young people in the audience of a rock concert in the summer of 69 somewhere in England. I'll post pictures which I'll get taken at the dress rehearsal. I've not seen our (the band) costumes yet but I've told the wardrobe lady I want a braided cavalry jacket similar to the one often worn by Jimi Hendrix,
ridiculously flared pants and big big hair!, which will be a bit of a bonus considering I'm nearly bald! This is probably my last chance to re-live my youth 'cause I was there the first time round. (Sad or what?) :beer1; :beer1;

After running into problems with the wing on my first plane, I went and bought another until I can get the first sorted out. Here it is, a Sig 4 Star 60, looks like I will get to have my maiden flight this weekend!
-
Allright Joe Paul! I have been waiting to see that thing. It looks great, good luck this weekend, I hope all goes well. Fly high my friend and enjoy yourself, don't froget to let us know how it goes "Caption."
-
Hey Joe Paul, when are you going to up the ante and get into a real kit plane, some type of ultralight? My husband's a pilot and right now he's also working for an AME and they're building a couple of ultralights. They also have a lot of ultralights come in for service, as well as certified aircraft. Why don't you get your pilot's licence? It would be SO much better to fly them, don't you think?
Ken, my husband also plays a strat and does ALOT of Hendrix as well as Stevie Ray Vaughn. I love to hear him play, except I'm not a big fan of Voodoo Chile (too noisey for me). I like Fire the best...Good luck at your gig!

#1. Would be nice if I could afford a real plane
#2. I doubt I could pass the physical requirements for a pilots license
#3. I'm happy with doing what I do, close as it comes to the "real" thing

I agree sluff & didn't get the chance to fly this weekend, too windy gusts up too 20+ mph.

My primary hobby is building scale models. I primarily do trains, but I also do some ships and aircraft. Here are some pictures of my collection:
First is an overall view of my steam locomotive collection. (The pistol that's slightly visible on the bottom shelf is part of my OTHER hobby: target shooting)
p.s. I hope my dietitian doesn't see the Dr. Pepper can (lousy phosphorous) >:D

Next is a close up of my favourite locomotive model. I've been continually working on this model for the last 7 years (adding and changing a detail here and there). It is based on an actual locomotive on display (and operational on occasion) at the Indiana Transportation Museum. I spent the summer of '99 as a volunteer at the museum working on that engine.

Finally is a series of "in progress" pictures of my current project that I'm working on during dialysis, the S.S. Jeremiah O'Brien. I should have it finished in another day or two. I only have a few small details left to do.
-
Nice models Adam!
-
Do the trains run on tracks, too? I love those little landscapes with the mini electric trains.
-
I've just completed the model of the O'Brien (almost). I only have to do the rigging, which is simply adding thread to simulate the cables for the cargo cranes.

Three of the steam locomotives actually run (the small switch engine on the bottom shelf on the right, and the one in the middle, which is my favourite). I have a third that runs, but it's out of the picture. The other three steam models are display only (and A LOT less expensive). All of my diesel models (which I have about ten of, but I don't have any pictures of them) are operational. I don't run any of them however because I don't have anywhere to run them.

those are pretty cool models Adam, oh, and i want to thank you cuz now i have a sudden urge to watch Titanic ;)

How in the world do you manage to make those models while on dialysis. I do not enough room to keep a drink and a book much less work on a model at my clinic. How do you do it?

Two words: VERY CAREFULLY. Basically, I take up both little tables on each side of the chair, both arms of the chair, and my lap. I've gotten pretty good at doing it despite the lack of space and awkward position.

Here is a picture of a quilt I just finished. The pictures are colored with crayon and it is then ironed to set the colors. The border is Newfoundland tartan. The pictures are all relavant to Newfoundland.

Hubby made the coffee table you see in the picture with the quilt.
-
Beautiful quilt Del, and awesome table, do you both do that for a living? Where do you live? i would love to have something made like that. :2thumbsup;
-
Goofynina, we live in Newfoundland Canada. I don't make quilts for a living. I am a grade 2 teacher. I am off on deferred salary leave this year so I have had time to do some sewing. Not much time for that when I am working. Hubby has made some things and sold them. I will post some more pictures of thing she has made when I get a chance. He built our boats. A cabin cruiser and a speed boat. I am going to do aother quilt like that one to fit a king size bed. That one is only a double. People have sold quilts like that for 3-4 hundred dollars. A beautiful souvenir for tourists to take home.
The picture is big because I didn't know hw to make it smaller.
-
Del, i would love to see more pics of what your hubby has made and how long does it take for you to make a quilt for a king size bed? Girl, that is awesome, i do not have the patience to sew my hubby's socks much less make a quilt, you go girl :2thumbsup; My sister in law made me a lap quilt with my nieces and nephews on it and a baby pic of my hubby in the middle, it is one of my most valued possesions, it means so much to me :)

Hi I was just wondering what hobbies if any people had,
When I was a teenager, I really enjoyed cooking. When I first moved out of home at 16/17, I was still a keen cook. Over the years, that kind of dropped off as I became busier.
However, since I've stopped working I've been doing a bit of cooking again. Funny thing is, the majority of new recipes I try cooking contain meat, and I make them for my husband - I'm a vegetarian, so I don't get to try them out! I've really got to start making some things for myself. but I like to make sure he always has plenty of food to take to work.
Other than that, I'd like to take up writing again but haven't been feeling inspired. It's something else I started as a kid - very young, actually. Stopped some years ago, though.
-
Wow i love both those quilts I wish i had talent to do that , I'm lucky if i can sew a button on. :2thumbsup;
-
one of my favorite hobbies is going to thrift stores. I love to fish saltwater as well as fresh. i collect old books,bibles and watches i like to fix them. Music is also up there as one of my favs.

Interesting that you said that, because my next project, which I'll start today, is a model of the Titanic.

Beautiful boat. Do you all use it regularly?
-
Yes Kitkatz we use it whenever the weather is suitable in the summer and fall. I am not a very good sailor I will not go in it when it is windy. It is a little bit of heaven to be floating along on the water and everything being peaceful. Can't wait to get it in the water. Will be about another month or so.
-
That is impresseive, Del!! A real boat! Have you ever gone out on the water at night
and fallen asleep? I've thought that would be so relaxing during a calm night.
-
Del, that boat is simply awesome, he built that boat? and it is floating? on water? amazing... :clap; ;)
-
We have never spend a night on the boat eventhough it has bunks and a bathroom!! The first thing I wanted put in was a toilet!! We have been out after dark. I have some beautiful sunset photos that I took from the boat. We have caught cod fish, mackeral, caplin, squid and other kinds of fish. The squid is really dirty. They squirt black ink at you. We came home one night covered in it - had to head straight for the shower. It was all over the boat as well. We forgot to close the door to the cabin. Took me and hubby 2 hrs to clean it the next day. Mr. Clean erasers did a wonderful job!!
-
Sounds like it would be a peaceful way to spend a night on the water.

Here are some more of my models. First is my latest creation, a 1/600th scale R.M.S. Titanic. This one generated a lot of attention at the dialysis centre as I was building it.
-
Here is a 1/12th scale Suzuki GSXR-600 motorcycle. If I was able to ride a motorcycle, I would LOVE to have something like this.
-
Here is a 1/64th scale Peterbuilt semi truck.
-
Finally, some more of my locomotive models. The first is the one steamer that was not in my first railroad picture, and the others are two of my diesel models. All of these models are operational.

I like how you have detailed your trains to give them that dirty/used look of real trains, it's a very nice touch.

NICE models!! :beer1;
-
Very nicely done Adam, the steadiness you must have, oh, and the patience, i cant even put a puzzle together :P Nice job :2thumbsup;
-
Adam I drove truck for 8 years Over the road I can really appreciate that flat bed Large Car as we called them Peterbilts on the road. Brings back a lot of memories.
-
Adam,
Awesome models man! I have been wanting to give building a try myself so I may send you a PM with some questions if that would be ok? I really like the Gixxer!! It looks like the real deal and I know the deal. I ride an '06 blue and white GSXR 750 on my good days and some of the not so bad ones too. Anyhow....Awesome job dude!
-
I can't believe I forgot to mention dog obedience. I haven't done it for some years now, but it was definitely one of my hobbies a few years ago, and I do want to return to it after my transplant. Trouble is, the clubs tend to break up over summer months. And getting me out of the house in winter months is a bit of a struggle.
-
Adam,

That would be ok, ask away. I'll do my best to answer what ever you ask. I've been building models for as long as I remember, so I've got some decent experience.

Even more models. Man! I'm going to run out of space if I keep this up.
First is a couple pics of the model I just finished, the RMS Mauretania. It was the biggest passenger liner in world until the Titanic and Olympic were built.
-
My current project: RMS Queen Mary 2. Currently the longest, tallest, widest, and heaviest liner ever built. It is about 400 feet longer than the Titanic. The model itself is almost three feet long, making it my largest ship model ever.

Here is a pic of a ship's wheel hubby made for our boat. It is made from solid oak. Also a pic of hubby relaxing after he completed our sunroom. Before any blinds or curtains were put up. And a pic of some of my flower beds. It is not my house in the pic. I did not know how to make them smaller!!

My all time favorite hobbies are photography and writing and until I started grad school back in Fall of 06, I was working on a thriller novel....
Here is a sample of my photography......
http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b83/ginskia/?action=view¤t=DSCN0153.jpg&slideshow=true&interval=3
the only pic there I didn't take is one of Tweetybird.......
I also love reading, movies, crafts, and gardening.......
Now since hobbies are mainly defined as how we spend our free time, my latest hobbies are computer, reading about medical information and kidney disease....I also collect kidney friendly recipes now and cook a lot for my husband......
I also enjoy PSP and I plan to get back into it as well as my photography and my novel.......
Now Mikes hobbies are the TV, politics, news, current events, sports, anything related to the military, and sometimes movies......he also likes to do artwork sometimes.....
-
I want to compliment all the guys for the models they built....they are all so beautiful and look very luxious......
-
All you busy, busy bees are making me feel so guilty about my laziness in recent years! Good work, everyone.
-
I am still scratching my head in wonder at the models done while in center while on dialysis! You must have tremendous patience to work in your lap in such close quarters and do such a nice job! My hat is off to you!
-
I have also started gardening, mostly flowers.
And while I'm on home dialysis I've been playing everquest (an online role playing game). Needless to say, I get alot of game time. Why does dialysis have to totally suck? heh At least I get to look forward to playing while I'm on. My wife wont let me play video games any other time!

Not long now until I play guitar and keyboard in the Musical '8 Miles High. It's about a group of young people in the audience of a rock concert in the summer of 69 somewhere in England. I'll post pictures which I'll get taken at the dress rehearsal. I've not seen our (the band) costumes yet but I've told the wardrobe lady I want a braided cavalry jacket similar to the one often worn by Jimi Hendrix,
ridiculously flared pants and big big hair!, which will be a bit of a bonus considering I'm nearly bald! This is probably my last chance to re-live my youth 'cause I was there the first time round. (Sad or what?) :beer1; :beer1;
EDITED: Fixed bold prompt - Sluff/ Admin
Well here's some pics of the band from the show taken during dress rehearsal. I did'nt get my cavalry jacket as planned but I think I just about look the part. The pic with just me and the bass player and drummer (hidden) was taken during Voodoo Chile, the reason I know is because it's the only song in the show where we play as a three piece only. We all had a great time over the three nights it was performed and we completely rocked our balls off.
SO BEHOLD!! A FAILED ROCK ICON!!! O0
Oh by the way I thought I'd include a pic of what I really look like. Maybe I should wear the disguise all the time lol

Here is the Queen Mary 2 model almost complete. I still have all the railing, two small stacks just behind the large one, the mast/radar towers, and two cargo cranes on the forward deck. I'll probably have it done in another couple weeks (this is sure keeping me busy for a while). The last picture is the model sitting next to a dialyzer for a comparison of size (the model is just under three feet long.

Hey Jaybird - fantastic pastime, so satisfying! My husband like to garden, and I enjoy the results. I believe you said you were facing a transplant soon? After the transplant, you must wear gloves and a mask when gardening due to the immunosuppressant drugs, and possible bacteria in the potting soils etc. But there's nothing to stop you from continuing the hobby!
-
Whoa, Adam! That's a huge model! Great work.
-
Some people call me a ham. I would tend to agree.
You and one of my uncles would get along great. He has been into Ham radio since before I was born, so it's probably going on 40 years. Not sure of his handle though. His whole family gets into it (Wife, Son, Daughter), belong to a club, and go to the swap meet/conventions.

Ok, here is an update....no hobbies nor anything lately nor even the last several months.....I cannot focus on anything lately......when my coursework starts, then I won't even have the time......for a year, I use to blog for a second income and that was fun but they made their new rules very strict like putting two non-work related posts between their client related posts....afraid I cannot do that since my blogs all have to be ad blogs and I only want to do it for money.....now if they offered to pay more than they did, maybe I would consider that stringent requirement.....after all writing is very time consuming....also one needs a lot of motivation to write and blogging can take all the energy out of a person like it did me.....when Big Brother starts maybe I can put that in there...let's see since BB will take up my time...I may get the feeds this year....
I have one goal now and that is to not only clean house but to give a thorough scubdown and organize each and every sheet of paper.......
-
My favorite hobby lately is reading the IHD board.It's such a comfort.Thanks everyone.I also enjoy reading,listening to music and mosaic.My next craft adventure will be tole painting.
-
Can I ask what is tole painting?
-
Tole painting is decorative painting on wood or metal objects.The designs can be ornate or simple.After my class maybe I'll share my masterpieces with all of you.LOL.Thanks for the question.

Beautiful piece Karol.Now that is a masterpiece!Thanks for sharing.I'm looking forward to my class.

I have a lot of admiration for all of you who can make beautiful pieces of art and those teeny tiny planes, cars, and trains and even a teeny tiny dialysis machine....they are all very cute......to top it off being a dialysis patient and yet you are very motivated says it all.......you just keep on going and that is great....
Now I don't even have CKD and yet I have no talent.....lol.......I know I better get my lazy fat self to action and do something like even cleaning......
Keep up the great job all of you......
-
to top it off being a dialysis patient and yet you are very motivated says it all.......you just keep on going and that is great....
Yes, I really admired this too. I've had a pre-emptive transplant, and therefore not been subjected to the stress of dialysis, and I love to see people using their time so productively and making the most of such a crap situation. You're all an inspiration.

I have read this whole thread and I have to admit I am a little curious about you if you have any hobbies and interests since you never mentioned if you do or not.....what do you like to do or if you just chill and get R&R, that is cool too, but I know I am somewhat curious if it is that or if you have talents you are not telling us about....lol...... :)
-
Hi Tweety
Thanks for your interest! I thought I had posted in this thread about my interests? Perhaps it was in a different thread, I'm too lazy to look. :)
My main interest is dogs. When I was much healthier, I used to do obedience training with my bull terriers. I will probably go back to it one day, but maybe not for a long time as the two bullies I currently have are getting on in age.
I like to read (just about anything) and write - I used to write fictional stories as a kid, huge 200 page things, but these days I'm more likely to write articles. These are usually just for newsletters for my dog clubs, and things like that, but I have been published in BARKS (the publication of the Bull Terrier Club of America) and Fully Bully magazine (an American magazine dedicated to the bull and terrier breeds). Writing is probably my best talent.
I'm also a huge fan of music. Heavy metal and thrash metal from the 80's and 90's is my main thing, but I also like punk and a wide range of other stuff, even some classical. I also play the organ, to a degree anyway, I took formal lessons from the age of 10 - 15 (I'm now 32).

Another metal fan awesome!
My main pastime is drumming and it has been my reason for breathing since I was a kid. With that I am also a obsessed music and movie collector. Listen to all types of music (except new country and rap) metal (old school thrash,doom,stoner),punk(NYHC,Oi!)classic rock, garage,jazz,old soul,ska,...the list goes on. Movie wise mainly horror/cult/b-movies. My DVD collection puts Netflix to shame a friend once said. I am basically a 14yo kid in a 42 yo body.

Ha ha, this is a good thing. I love nothing more than a good live metal gig coming to town :2thumbsup; My husband is 5 years older than me, and he is still much the same, also. You're only the age you feel you are!

Hi Cycobully,
Thanks for answering my questions.....yeah I think somewhere else you did post dog obedience but I am glad you said it again over here......I know that must be interesting since it is very much a challenge.....I love the little dogs but I am not too crazy about the big ones......I love those dog commercials since they are just so precious.......the little ones are just too cute.......I am not a cat person at all though unless they are still little kittens.......
It is great you write for a living now.....I use to write too but nowhere near the extent of what you do......mine is all nonsensical stuff......I did once start a thriller novel but come to think of it the reason for that may have been is that an author friend of mine was very persuasive about it and kept telling me I can write....but I have not done anything with it in over a year and it is most likely a pie in the sky business.......I may just hand over my initial work to him and let him do what he pleases and not ask for any credit on it.....
I am glad you have very constructive ways to occupy your time......with the little free time I have, I am mostly as what I have stated in other threads what I am really doing for my husband and then I spend the rest of my free time on the message boards......I also have to do a lot of housework which is a big load.....then I like my TV programs....not a lot of stuff I watch but very soon, Big Brother will be on and I may get the feeds for that.....I don't know yet.....but that show will keep me busy and now Age of Love is on which I always watch........
I use to do some photography but I haven't in a long time since memory cards are very expensive......and then I don't have much room on this puter to store them but I need to make some prints one day....those photo cards are very expensive too not to mention the ink for it......ha ha......I want to get back into PSP but once again there is the issue of puter storage.......ha ha.......
I haven't been able to get into music lately and in fact, I don't even listen to my ipod but I do play music in the car to make the drive not so long.....
I agree that these guys here do great work on their miniatures.......that takes patience and talent.....
-
It is great you write for a living now.....
Oh, I must have given the wrong impression there. I do not write for a living, I've never been paid for my articles.
Your life sounds so busy, tweetykiss, it's a wonder you have any time for yourself! I too like to play my music in the car to make the drive more tolerable, especially over long distances.

You didn't give the wrong impression......I assumed it and slam on me......sorry....in fact you didn't say anything about making money from your writing.....you said you are published and I took that out of context....duh Tweety ::)
Yeah I guess you can say I am busy being a caregiver for my husband and I take gratification in it........I do take time for myself like checking emails and posting on forums and going to chat to talk to my friends......you should come to chat too since I know you are very nice and an interesting person....all of us have fun in there..... :grouphug;
-
I crochet and read obsessively (as much as working full-time and having a high maintenance child will let me, anyway). I have also discovered lately that I really enjoy cooking, so I usually will spend a good portion of Sunday afternoons making dinners for the week so I don't have to rush it and can really enjoy the process.

Oh, I didn't even realise this forum had chat. I'll make sure to pop in one day! Is there a common time that people are there? (I'll need to convert that into my local time)
Cheers :)

hope you can drop in one day

Thanks Charee and Tweety. I'll make a point of dropping in some time. Sounds fun!

The latest addition to my "fleet".
1/350th scale Japanese battleship Musashi (this is the one that I splattered blood on-see my post "bleeding problem" in the general dialysis section).
-
That is a awesome piece of work! Do you work on this during treatments? I seem to set off alarms whenever I move my hand to change the channel when I am in the chair.
-
I finally finished & flew my Decathlon (the one pictured earlier in the post). All thats left now is to cut out the cowling. The plane flies great!! Hard to tell from the picture, but thats an 80 inch wingspan.
-
That's a beauty JP! You're right, it's hard to imagine the size - maybe post a photo of you holding it? Looks like lots of fun! Great job!
-
Amazing work Adam and JoePaul, i cant even put batteries in the remote :P Keep up the great work :2thumbsup;

I would love to see that plane fly JP. :thumbup;

Yes, we need some video footage! :2thumbsup;
I am going up to the field again today & will bring my camera. Its new to me (Pentax optio mx) and I haven't used the video feature yet, but I will see what I can do. A club member did take some footage of the plane, but said it would be some time before he will get to put it on a DVD.
On a side note, another member has the real plane mine is modeled after, and flew up yesterday to give us a show. That was awesome seeing the real thing doing 4 point rolls, flying inverted, loops then finally a high speed low pass 100 feet above our heads. As you may have guessed, we share our model airport with small aircraft. Hang in there, test footage to come (crossing fingers)
-
Ah, I can relate to that. I don't even own a digital camera (though I did have a digicam at one point) - and whenever I try to use a digital camera I get confused. I just can't work them! :D

Too bad you didn't catch a ride. I don't think I could stomach the rolls however.

Still working on a video, but in the meantime here is a picture of me & the plane.

Great pic, Joe Paul. :2thumbsup;
-
Lookin' good there JoePaul (and the plane dont look bad either) ;) :2thumbsup;

Thanks for the pic Joepaul. How long on a tank of fuel can your bird stay in the air? Also if you run out will it float to a safe landing or crash?

Thanks for the pic Joepaul. How long on a tank of fuel can your bird stay in the air? Also if you run out will it float to a safe landing or crash?
I have been timing the fuel consumption and so far I can fly a good 15 minutes on 16 ounces of fuel. Once the engine is broken in, I'm sure that will go up to 20 minutes. This plane does glide well enough in the event the engine should flame out, I should be able to bring it in for a safe landing. Thanks for the compliments ;D
-
Sorry this is a bit late!
Adam - Great Ship. :thumbup;
Joe Paul - I remember you telling me a few months back that you had been working on it, it looks great!! well done my friend. Hope your having fun flying it. :2thumbsup;

Anyone make any teeny tiny models of those planes, dialysis machines, computers, cars, or trains lately?......I just love to see miniatures...... :bandance; :bandance; :bandance;

I posted some updated photos of the dialysis machine model in the general discussion ("I have way too much time on my hands").

Here is my latest project, its a 1/4 scale model of an actual "homebuilt" experimental RV-4.
-
AWESOME plane, Joe Paul. I'd love to get into RC flying, if I had the money to do it.
Adam
-
Cool plane JoePaul :2thumbsup; , quick question, how many planes do you have and where do you store them all? :popcorn;
-
Here are some upgrades to my RAPIDLY growing model collection (again, these are all ships-I guess I'm and old salt at heart, even though I've only seen the ocean once). First is the heavy cruiser U.S.S Indianapolis (appropriate because I live in Indy).
-
Next is the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Enterprise. This model is only about three inches long (1/1200 scale).
-
The next two are my current project, the coast defense battleship U.S.S. Oregon (the US navy's third "real" battleship). The most difficult part of this model has been the painting. The kit comes molded entirely in gray, intending to be modeled as the ship appeared in 1898 during the Spanish-American war, but I chose to build the ship as she appeared just after entering service in 1896, so I've had a TON of painting to do, since the 1896 version didn't have ANY gray.

I have 5 planes & 2 I store on the wall in my room, the other 3 I keep on a platform in my basement. Nice work on the models Adam! Thanks again for the compliments.
-
Beautiful work Joe and Adam....I love the ships and the plane.....I like the machine Adam.....
Joe, can you book me a flight on that plane....just kidding...
-
You both do wonderful work on your models. :2thumbsup;

While looking at this thread again I just noticed there is a pilot in the cockpit. That is too cool.
-
Oh my goodness, so there is! Well spotted - is that why you're called "Hawkeye?"
:D Back in high school we had a teacher we used to call Hawkeye 'cause he could see us smoking at the back of the oval when no other teachers could.
-
The USS Oregon model is pretty much done (just a few very small details here and there left to do). This kit has been around since the 1950's, and the quality of the parts really shows it's age. The brass railings and other details really make a difference (the original railings are solid plastic ridges that don't look anything like ship's railings). They are a bit more tedious to work with, but the improvement is well worth th effort.
Adam

Awesome work my friend :clap; and the details are amazing :2thumbsup; Now if i remember correctly you said you work on these while being hooked up? Is that right? Either or, GREAT JOB :yahoo;

I do a lot of my model work while I'm on the machine. The shelf that doubles as a workbench for model building is on one side of my bed, and my machine is on the other, so I can easily do model work and not have to move around much and risk kinking my lines, interrupting my blood flow, or yanking my needles out. Now THAT would suck, considering I've already hosed one model down with blood :oops; while I was pulling my needles one time.

Here's some of what I've been making while I'm on my NxStage. They are made out of polymer clay that bakes in the oven. The little wire loops are to hold photos, recipes, etc. These are pics of ones I've already sold.

Those are cool. Do you just sell them online or do you go to craft fairs and flea markets?
-
I sell them at a couple of gift shops - one that I work at that belongs to a friend of mine, and also in gift area of the lobby of my dad's restaurant. I also have friends with a seasonal pumpkin barn, and I put a lot of different quilts and crafts there when they open in the fall.
-
Jbeany, those are cuuuute!!!!! I can think of a lot of people who would love to have one (or two!) of those!!!! I don't suppose you'd consider selling them here on IHD, would you???? :bow;

Very cute! :)

i want some!!!!! ever think of going into the mail order business?
-
:clap; Awesome work Jbeany, i too, love the dragon, :clap; Do you do these by imagination or do you have models posing in front of you :P ;) :popcorn;
-
I started with a really great instruction book by an artist named Dinko Tilov. Some of the ones in the pics, like the knight and dragon, are pretty close to his lessons. The rest, I make up as I go along. I like doing the little old men - my "Harold" angels - the best - the clay just sort of directs itself while you are shaping it. I like making up my own critters better than following the book's lessons - it's more fun to do original stuff, but I'm doing all the lessons just to learn his techniques.
If I ever get far enough ahead to sell any online, I'll start taking orders here! Right now, the friend who owns the gift shop is buying them from me as fast as I can sculpt them.
-
Time to set up your own website and mail order service! Those are great! :)

I see we have some Brits posting here. I'm a HUGE Doctor Who fan, and I'm also a moderator at http://tv.groups.yahoo.com/group/Ohio_Type_40/
Not a Brit but I am a huge Doctor Who fan. I am loving the new series and though I haven't gotten to see it yet I Tivo'd Torchwood the new Doctor Who spinoff that just started. I don't belong to any Doctor Who chat groups, but would always be wiling to talk about the good doctor.

Here's a parody of Dr Who fans from the show The Chaser's War on Everything: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1fUfbkopuo
:) I don't really think this way about Dr Who fans at all, I just thought it might be good for a giggle.

U.S.S. Lexington aircraft carrier.

Looking good! :thumbup;

Cool you can add little planes to your aircraft carrier.

Yes, the kit comes with 13 aircraft (four fighters, six dive bombers, and three torpedo bombers), and it's possible to order more. I've added five of the planes (they're kind of tedious to build, so I only do one at a time) and I'll probably order a few more sets, because the Lexington could carry a lot more than 13 planes.

I just think it's cool that not only do you have the ship, but with the planes it makes it look more complete and functional.
-
Here is the carrier with most of the planes added (although I still need to do the U.S. Navy markings on the wings). The ink pen in the last pic is for size comparison. These bloody things have 10 to 15 separate parts each, and they are SO TINY.
-
The three types of aircraft in order: F4F Wildcat fighter, SBD Dauntless dive bomber, and TBD Devastator torpedo bomber. (The TBD really sucked. Most of them were shot down by Japanese fighters and anti-aircraft guns before they could even drop their torpedoes).
-
Great work
-
I'm probably not supposed to call war machines cute, am I? ;D But at that size, I can't help it!
-
Lots of patience there Adam, and a great job!
-
Adam? How old were you when you started this hobby? I have a Godson that i know would love to do stuff like this but he is only 10 (i think that is a little too young yet) but who knows right? You do amazing work and thank you for sharing :clap;
-
Adam, my husband shares your model skills. He is a plane fanatic, so focuses many on aircraft--lots of WWII planes. He does great diaoramas. It is his stress reliever and has been working on models our whole married life. He has hundreds of boxes of models he will never put together. Recently, he went to a hobby store closing and came home with even more models. But, he got such good deals! At least, that is what he tells me! It keeps him busy and makes him happy-so I can't complain. You do great work. I am going to show him your pictures tonight. I know he will enjoy them. I don't have the patience for all that fine work----I would much rather design wedding gowns and do beadwork on them!! Thanks for sharing your hobby with us.
-
Paris, how can you do beadwork without patience? ;D

I think I was about 10 or 11 when I started, but I definitely didn't start with anything like what I do now. I basically started with simple, pre-painted snap together kits that could be built in just a few hours. I built models like those, and some slightly more advanced models for the next ten years or so. Here are some pictures of my first serious model that I really tried to do right, the U.S.S. Arizona. This was built about six or seven years ago, and I think it took about a month to build. I've just started cleaning and restoring it with modern brass details.
Adam
-
When I first started doing models, I built mainly airplanes. I haven't done any for years, but I decided to get back into it. Here are three WWII airplanes that I've been working on. First is a P-51 Mustang fighter, which was considered the best American fighter plane of the war.
-
Next is an SBD Dauntless dive bomber (one of the types on the carrier in one of my previous posts). I haven't done the markings yet, but those are coming soon.
-
Finally, my favourite. An A6M2 Zero fighter, Japan's best fighter of the war. This particular plane is modeled after the plane flown by the leader of the fighter pilots at the Pearl Harbor attack, Lt. Commander Shigero Itaya.
-
Good work Adam :thumbup;
-
Gosh, you all make me feel so lazy, I've got nothing to show off. :oops;
-
Adam, those are amazing, you keep on amazing us my friend :2thumbsup;
-
I do all kinds of stuff. Here is a list of some of them that I really like!
Counted cross-stitch, crochet, scrapbooking, stamping & embossing, soap making, candle making, bath salts and ceramics (I haven't done this in a while).
-
I really should take up writing again, so at least I'd be doing something.
I haven't written fiction in YEARS. Not sure how I'd go anymore. These days it's all short dog stories, or articles for club newsletters and things, I can whip one of those up in no time. But when I think about writing a story, my mind just goes blank. That bank of creativity I had when younger seems to have dried up.
-
Hey Cyco, you should join in on the story they are writing here: http://ihatedialysis.com/forum/index.php?topic=2660.0 :2thumbsup;
-
Yes please please please -- take this story and add to it -- even a little will help-- add a dog! -- we appreciate your help!
-
As well as you write here, Cyco, you'd be a great storyteller! That's my favorite form of the written word, short sthories. They are the hardest to write, and when done well, they are excellent!!
-

Oh, I've never even been into that section before. I'll have to have a look at it on the weekend. Tonight = exhausted!
-
My latest WWII airplane, almost complete and waiting for markings. It's a Grumman TBF Avenger torpedo bomber. This was the largest single engined, carrier based aircraft of the war. The paint on the model came out a bit rough, and I'm trying to come up with a way to fix it before I do the markings, without having to completely strip it. That would risk messing up the nice paint on the cockpit canopy frame.

I've posted a lot about my models, but I haven't mentioned one of my other hobbies (technically multiple "sub-hobbies"), which is shooting. I do target shooting, and some small game hunting usually with high powered pellet guns, but occasionally firearms as well. The shooting hobby I'm most active in, however is airsoft. For those who've never heard of it, airsoft is very similar to paintball, but the guns are exact replicas of actual police, military, and civilian firearms. The guns shoot 6mm plastic pellets or 6mm paintballs, and they are either spring powered, gas powered (CO2 or a gas similar to propane that comes in a pressurized cylinder), or powered by an air pump run by a battery powered electric motor. Airsoft can be played on private land, or a designated paintball/airsoft field. We also use equipment similar to what's used by police and military forces (vests, helmets, radios, etc.). I usually play it with friends down in Southern Indiana where my best friend's grandmother has a huge area of land that we can use for different types of shooting. The only change I've had to make since starting dialysis is wearing a protective guard over my access. The airsoft pellets are plastic and they rarely break the skin, but a dead on hit in my graft could be unpleasant. Of coarse I have to show pictures :lol;
Me holding and aiming my airsoft sniper rifle, with my airsoft tactical vest and sidearm (I also have a helmet and safety goggles that I use when I'm actually shooting/playing the game)
-
Adam, you amaze me my friend, i love how you are able to keep yourself busy with such awesome hobbies :2thumbsup; And i have to admit, after seeing you with that assault rifle, i am glad i am on your team, i'd hate to piss you off ;) Your techs better watch themselves :P lol, j/k Keep up the great work amigo :clap;
-
A few of my different guns. The old revolver in the last pic was my grandfather's favourite gun. The last time it was fired was about 30 years ago, and I'm working on restoring it to firing condition.
In order:
Winchester 800X high powered pellet rifle
AR-15 airsoft assault rifle (this gun now has and electronic scope on it)
Daisy 15XT CO2 powered BB pistol (Not very accurate, and kind of banged up, but still fun to shoot)
G36C airsoft assault rifle
Super 9 Pro airsoft sniper rifle (my favourite airsoft gun)
H. Schmidt .22 cal revolver (antique)
-
Wow. That is impressive, Adam! I liked your piictures, with you posing, very professional looking!
The guns looked cool too!
-
Awhile ago I posted pics of the Queen Mary 2 model I've been working on (the HUGE ocean liner). At one point I mentioned I had "a couple weeks" till it was done. Well, that "couple weeks" turned into six months and it STILL isn't 100% done (granted I've taken some time off here and there). With a kit that has well over 500 pieces, things just keep adding up. Right now I mainly have touch up painting and some markings left to do. Anyhoo, here she is.
-
Adam, those models are amazing, such detail, and if i might add, it was great to finally see you in a pic too ;) ;) Nice work, keep it up amigo :2thumbsup;

So good to be back on this thread since I was always impressed with everyone's hard work here. I must say to all of you who posted pics of your crafts, they look great and I am very impressed.
Now last time I was here, I know I mentioned my hobbies were photography and writing and I even posted a link a long time ago to my nature photo album but because of our high medical bills, I cannot spend the money on photography.
I have other hobbies too. Reading is one of them and I am currently reading the Stephenie Meyer Twilight Series about Bella and Edward and I just cannot wait to see the movie that is coming out late this year. I am on her third book called Eclipse. I loved Twilight and New Moon. After finishing this book, since her WIP book called Breaking Dawn won't be out until later this year, I will read both Historian by Elizabeth Kostova and My Life by Bill Clinton which are both big books so that will keep me busy and then I have to reread my Harry Potter books so I can read Goblet of Fire, Order of Phoenix, Half Blood Prince and her latest one as well as the Spiderwick Chronicles and Lemony Snicket series.
It is going to take time to do all this since my studies consume me and I will be starting my pre-clinical time next month which will take up a lot and then my Abstract Algebra is killing me which I have a test next week...UGH!!!! I do have to do my reading though to unwind.
I am also obsessed with Mick St. John/Alex O'Loughlin and I even run a facebook group on him located at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=6247924639
I have written some fanfiction based on his character and I am going to open a blog at a personal website where I can post all this so that everyone can read it.
-
You all seem to have such varied and cool hobbies. I have a couple myself. I like to collect coins, fish and grow orchids. Collecting coins and fishing are fun, but growing orchids, especially buying orchids is addictive. Currently, I have somewhere between 175 and 200. :bandance;

I won second place in a photography contest http://imageevent.com/msadie/renegadescontest9 (also runner up) a couple years ago.
Wish I had more time to get better at editing in photoshop.

Hey, Uni - is there any real value to old wheat pennies? I've got a handful my dad collected over the years. Are they worth anything more than a penny each?
-
Jbeany
Here is a link to the value table of wheat pennies by year and privy mark. Good luck
-
I do rock engraving/etching. Bottom pic is one of me daughters by our family rock.

All i do is try and find different things to talk about with my support group and come on-line with my extended family and doing da :bandance;

Hey Keith,
If you haven't already figured it out. What you are doing now probably helps more than you know. So when you state: "All you do" many of us see a whole lot more. Keep fighting the good fight brother!

I thought I would put up a few pics of my more memorable catches
1 & 2 --250lbs marlin I caught in Jamiaca
3 - 19.8lbs Gar pike I caught in Napanee, Ontario. Would have been the Ontario record if I knew it at the time and recorded it properly
4 - 36lbs carp caught on the Rideau Canal
Edited: Photos attached and resized - okarol/admin
-
But the best catch of all is your wife! I remeber seeing wedding pictures somewhere.
-
True, no catch will ever compare to her
-
As for hobbies, I recently started to get right back into cooking.
I hate the clean-up part though, I wish I would pick an easier hobby. lol. Or maybe I just need a bigger dishwasher and a maid to clean the bench tops. :bandance;
-
That is why I do not cook, the clean up is terrible and no one helps.

Here are some photos of my beloved garden in early summer. The beds eventually get filled in with the annuals and I keep putting pots or barrels in the perennial beds as things fade out. I'm also planning some more shrub plantings to cut down on my lawn areas.
-
:2thumbsup; Beautiful garden! Wow!
-
monrein, your garden and yard are beautiful. How would you like to come to Maryland and do mine? I will feed you all the weird stuff they eat around here. I'm so jealous. :-*
-
Sue thing W&W, I do quite a few garden consultations for friends and would love to visit Maryland, meet you guys and eat your local weird foods....you sure know how to lure a girl to your neck of the woods. LOL.
Glad you like the garden.
-
Great garden :)
-
monrein, caught any snails in your garden
it is a beauty
I though you said you lived in a small cottage
I pictured you living on an exoctic beach
sunning on the beach all day
you have a wonderful place
it looks calming
-
well, I am not saying it is very pretty
I still get my batons and twirl, twirl, twirl
especially fire batons near the 4th
usuallly in the backyard
but sometimes to irritate my children, the front yard
-
Very beautiful garden. You sure have a green thumb.
I guess you don't have deer.

Found it! Beautiful, absolutely beautiful. Okay, I am inspired to try harder with my shade.

Time for an update on my scale model navy:
These are my newest ships, which I didn't actually build, but they are part of my collection so I'll add them. They are the battleships USS Texas and USS Utah. They are my smallest ship models, which were hand made entirely from metal. These little models are kind of pricey, but the detail that you get with such a small model makes them worth the price.
-
This is the Japanese aircraft carrier IJN Akagi. It's not done yet, and there is a lot of touch up work to do, such as smoothing out rough paint spots, but it's coming along.
-
IJN Musashi. I posted this model a while ago, but I've since started adding full rigging to the masts. The rigging is made from steel wire, and it's not quite done yet, but most of it is there.
-
wow that looks like a lot of work. thanks for showing us.
-
Now all you need is a few United States submarines and a bomber to attack your ships!
-
mine and my dads hobby...rc cars....lately he has been building tanks, he has tons of 'em. right now he is working on a submarine
-
Nice! I especially like the tanks. I've done a few tank models (I still have a Sherman waiting to be fixed), and while I don't enjoy building them quite like I do ships, trains and planes, they are still an interesting mode subject.
Adam

Great work Adam...I used to be so hooked on crafts, everything in the world and I worked 60 to 80 hours a week also so I think just wore out...now I just breath but I am getting back to sewing..I used to sew all my sons and husbands suits, shirts,etc, sleeping bags..went through a sewing machine a year. I bought an embroidery machine the month before I lost my vision so just have not used it yet but I am thinking about dusting it off and trying it. I also enjoy reading, and my perennial garden. At this time I'm trying to teach my ADHD grandaughter how to sew and cook and that is a feat in itself and a whole nother story..she has no control and chooses not to have.
-
Hey Adam,
I got my husband a 1/64 scale PT-109 model boat kit, and he was wondering if it can be painted with acrylic instead of oil based paints. Any insight? Thanks.
Karol

Paging Adam!
-
Hubby likes to have a project to work on. he enjoys carpentry and building things. He is good at it as well (or I think so anyway)!!lol I am the helper on this project that we have spent most of the summer working on. It will be a home for our boat, skidoo, atv, snowblower and a lot of other junk. Here are some pictures.
-
monrein...beautiful garden, I'm now properly ashamed of mine...just started a new one this year when I moved here.........BTW...I love to wash dishes but no one cooks for me..hmm what's wrong with that picture.
-

Sorry I was late responding. It could be painted with either (as long as it's plastic compatible), but I prefer enamel personally. I just think it goes on a little more smoothly.
Adam
-
Del, that building is wonderful! My Dad was a carpenter so I thought all men could build anything. Wrong! I love the smell of sawdust! Dad built houses and I use to love to go with him on the job and hand nails to him. I think I could move into that new building---great job!
-
me too del....can I have a corner....where I come from that is a house...not a shed...beautiful job....paris I would share with you.
Ann

What an impressive building Del. Amazing.

Thanks G-ma! We need an IHD house to run away to and be with those who understand. Del, would you mind us setting up in your new building? :rofl;
-
Here are some more photos of my garden as the summer has rained along. The plants love the rain and so I don't mind it.
-
At the risk of boring you all, here are some more.
-
Simply beautiful, monrein! Whatever the weather conditions, your garden seems to be thriving. :flower;
Thanks for sharing!
-
:flower; where are the pictures of your sister visiting and the strange yet interesting food you eat
do you ever climb that twisted tree and read a book while still in it

really pretty garden

Fire batons? Cool!

that is so cool and she looks just like me
maybe some years ago
but I swear it is me
once I caught my hair on fire
that was not too cool :rofl;
-
Gail, I finally found your garden photos. Beautiful! It looks like the pacific northwest where you are. Do you get lots of rain?
It gets so hot and dry here in the summer that most everything is looking sort of tired and brown by now. It's hard to justify planting things that need a lot of water in my yard because we have a well.
Thanks for sharing your oasis.
-
We don't usually get as much rain as we have this summer. I water my beds in summer as a rule but the grass often has to fend for itself. I also try to plant trees and shrubs to provide as much shade to the lawn as possible. I'm enjoying this year's garden-friendly weather.
-
Hey, haven't seen any new projects from Adam lately. And Joe Paul - any new planes?
I went through this whole thread again - quite a talented group! :bow;
-
Joe Paul - any new planes?
No Karol, by the time I got used to going in center for hemo again, the summer passed me by. Didn't get much flying time in either, maybe next year.
-
Some recent photos I took - rose from my friends garden and poppies from the field
-
Oh Monrein, what a stunning garden. Would you like to come and do mine up? :rofl; Of course, you have to deal with our record breaking drought..... :(
-
Joe Paul - any new planes?
Well, I went and did it, I got a new plane. Its a Cessna 182 with a 95 inch wingspan.
-
That looks like fun, JP!

I have built a few new ships in the last few months. I'll dig out the camera and take some pics.
Adam
-
Ok, here are my latest.
Here is the U.S.S Ronald Reagan, a Nimitz class nuclear powered aircraft carrier. This ship can last for 15 YEARS before she needs refueling! The model is about 85% complete.
-
Here's the S.M.S. Emden, a German light cruiser which entered service in 1910 and was destroyed by the Australian cruiser HMAS Sydney in 1914. Emden was basically pounded into scrap metal by Sydney, and her crew intentionally beached the ship to keep her from sinking. Later the hulk was cut up and sold for scrap.
-
These two ships fought each other in the most "one-sided" battleship confrontation in history. This was the Battle of Tsushima during the Russo-Japanese war of 1905, in which the Japanese annihilated the Russian Baltic Fleet which had sailed 19,000 miles to engage the Japanese in the Far East. The first ship is the Russian battleship Borodino, which was sunk at Tsushima with only one survivor. The second is the Japanese battleship Mikasa, which is currently on display in Yokosuka, Japan. Sorry about the crappy quality of Borodino's picture. The black colour made lighting a little difficult.
-
Last but not least is IJN Yukikaze, one of the few Japanese destroyers to survive WWII. After the Japanese surrender, Yukikaze was stripped of all her armament, and was used to repatriate Japanese ex-soldiers and civilians from the former Pacific empire. She was then transferred to the Taiwanese navy, and was used until 1971 when she was damaged by a typhoon. Because of her age (built in 1939), it was decided to scrap her rather than have her repaired.
-
What a nice collection, Adam. Did you build all of these? If so you are truly talented.
-
Wow you have been busy Adam! Well done!
-
Hey Adam, looks like you've given up sleeping. Nice work.
-
Hey Adam, looks like you've given up sleeping. Nice work.
Sleeping is highly overrated. I've now started working on the light aircraft carrier U.S.S. San Jacinto, which was the carrier that George H W Bush flew off of during the war.
Adam
-
Nice work Adam :thumbup; My project has to wait, as I have ordered "hinge points" for all the control surfaces. Being it is so large, 1/4 scale, I decided I would give these a try, I want this plane to be around for a while to come. (p.s.) Hinge points are what connect the ailerons, flaps, elevator and rudder to the main components of the Aircraft.
-
Nice looking plane. I have a small crappy RC helicopter but I'm not very good at flying it. A long time ago I had one of those "control line" airplanes powered by a small gas engine. For those that don't know what a control line plane is, it's a model plane that connects by string to a hand controller and flies around you as you spin around in circles holding the controller. Not a good model plane to fly if you get dizzy too easily. Is that plane gas or electric?

Here are some photos of five of my orchids that are currently blooming again for me. My other two are sending up their bloom stalks, two each, but it will be a month or so I think till they actually bloom. I usually get two blooming periods a year and they last up to two months each.
-
Monrein, your orchids are absolutely beautiful!
-
Yes Monrein, very pretty :thumbup;
-
gorgeous orchids!
-
monrein those are gorgeous orchids. Great pictures :cuddle;
-
I got the hinge points I was waiting for, so I unpacked the wing and ailerons to start assembly. One of the ailerons turned out to be crushed on the end.(long piece behind the engine in the picture) I have been in contact with the manufacturer, they told me I have to send the complete wing set back to them, in turn, they will send a new wing set back. Another 2-3 week delay :banghead; Ive decided to make the plane as scale as possible, so in the picture you can see the supplied landing gear (the wire with the loop and wheel pant) , then the scale gear I found on line. Also pictured is the engine, its a 26 cc gas engine. That engine is built specifically for planes, but for comparison, is similar to the engine some of you may have, in your gas weed whackers.
-
Can you fly it over my yard and whack some weeds with it? :rofl;
-

Geez, and I have trouble keeping my peace lily alive. If it didn't droop visibly when it needs water, it'd would have been dead ages ago. Nice to see what someone with a green thumb can do!
-
Here are my newest motorcycle models. First is a 1/18th scale 1909 Harley Davidson V-twin (the very first Harley that used a V-twin engine)
Oh, and sorry about the crappy pics. My $350 camera equipped phone takes terrible pics compared to my second hand $100 Kodak.
-
Now my 1/12th scale Honda NR-750 sport bike. I took pics through different phases of construction. Again, sorry about the bad quality. Maybe later I'll take some better pics with my other camera.

Joe
Nice looking build who makes that kit Hangar 9?? Ive gotten out of the airplane flying for awhile but want to get back in, been thinking about a 1/4 scale build maybe the Balsa USA Cub..
Sorry I over looked this thread earlier and posted in another section. That thread can be moved here is the moderators would like..
-
Yes Monsterman, thats a Hanger 9. I am converting over to a 2.4 Spektrum on the radio system, as you probably know, its going to be nice to go to the field, and not have to worry about someone else being on my channel and shooting down my planes.
-
Something a little different. This is a free paper kit of the World Trade Center complex that I downloaded from the internet and printed. It's my first attempt at a paper model, and it's not quite done yet. I still have to add three more buildings. I'm doing this one as practice, and when I'm confident enough with paper structure models, there is another WTC kit available (also free) that is bigger and looks a lot better.
-
Haven't been to this thread for a while.
Since I am feeling so well these days, I am filling my time with going out to see bands a lot more. Like I used to when younger. Mostly metal bands.
The local shows are hit and miss, but I get super-psyched when international bands I've loved for years are touring. We've got quite a few coming up (e.g. Kreator who I haven't seen before and can't wait, and then Slayer/Megadeth on the same bill - who'da thunk it?, and plenty more to follow) and tickets are costing me a fortune. Well worth it though.
The rest of my spare time is taken up with cooking. I like cooking.

I collect STUFF!
I recently was given this adorable egg cup and I just love her! Not everyone appreciates egg cups, they are all but abandoned on the breakfast table anymore. I collect them and this is destined to be one of my all time favorites!
My other hobby is photography, so here's a photo of the egg cup.
-
Don't know a thing about egg cups other than I've seem them used in movies... but I'd l ike to comment on the composition and the lighting of your photograph. Excellent! The raspberries are so lovely they make me hungry.

My hobby is making cards.
I made one for Jbeany tonight. :flower;
-
I don't have a hobby. Everyone keeps telling me I need a hobby or a dog. Guess they want to keep me busy so I'll stay off the computer (unless that's a hobby?)
-
thats not a hobby thats a addiction.......... :2thumbsup;

Collecting stuff.
I have a shadow box that contains the following:
A piece of the Berlin Wall
A piece of stone from Tienanmen Square, China
A Piece of stone from Red Square, Moscow
A vial of water that is snow from the North Pole
A bolt from the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco
A piece of Grand central Station, NY
Dust from the World Trade Center. NY
Pieces of London Bridge, Lake Havasu
Copper from the statue of Liberty
Pieces of Alcatraz, San Francisco
Coal from the Titanic
A meteorite
Pieces of the deck from the Queen Mary
Note: I did not destroy anything to obtain these artifacts. They were either purchased or just picked up off the ground.
The picture is of my father 9/14/01 World Trade Center. He also got me the Red Square pieces and the North Pole snow when he parachuted onto the North Pole at age 62. For fun!

OOps, here is the picture

Here are some photos of five of my orchids that are currently blooming again for me. My other two are sending up their bloom stalks, two each, but it will be a month or so I think till they actually bloom. I usually get two blooming periods a year and they last up to two months each.
Monrein, I love your orchids. Orchids have always been my favourite flowers,
& the delicate colours of your orchids are just wonderful!
Thanks for sharing them with us, Kristina.

Yes, Dan, being on the computer and becoming computer prolific is a hobby. Now, is doing laundry a hobby? If so, then I qualify.
-
One of my hobbies besides painting is Country Line Dancing but my husband hasn't been feeling up to it since July so I haven't been dancing too much lately.

I have held an atateur radio license for the past 18 years. Not to active the last few months since I moved to a new state. Plan to put up an antenna tower this spring and be more active. Of course I will have to get help with the physical labor. The hams on IHD will understand this beter. I prefer to operate on the Very High and Ultra High Frequencies in what is refered to as "the weak singal modes" or morse code and single sideband. I use operate in all the VHF/UHF contests from remote locations in the US midwest. These are mainly take place on weekends. I still would if not for my other medical issues (restricted physical mobility) unrelated to dialysis. This coincideted with my other hobby then which was camping (what is refered to as "primitve" tents and sleeping bags, carry everthing in you need and carry it all out inculding your trash).
I also paint. Watercolor on canvas board. Drawing too. Been doing this for decades but I am not that good in other words it was never a career option as many others are better.
This has been an interesting thread.

Can you post the links? Those look interesting.

Why the seams on my quilts are never quite straight. . .

I printed one of those out. Thanks, Karol. I'm not that patient, so I'm sending it to my nephew!

Crafting tip for the day - Don't keep a bottle of hand lotion right next to the bottle of sewing machine oil.
-
Jbeany, I was thinking of you today while cutting out patterns. Our family is working with an organization called Pajama Pals that collects new pajamas and books for children and distributes them at Christmas. The head of it said I could make pajamas :thumbup; so I am surrounded with fabric and very excited to have a new project. How are your bags coming along? When is the next craft show? And the visual of mixing up hand lotion with sewing machine oil is too funny!
-
Here's a quick assortment of what I've been working on. Not sure how well the fabrics show up in small pics with my old camera, but you'll get the idea. Most of the fabrics are decorator samples I got free from an interior designer who was moving her office and didn't want to drag along all her outdated fabric. Some of them are 80 or 100 dollars a yard to get new, so the fabric quality is amazing. The odd Indian print is a scarf with Hindu Mayura peacock spirits on it that I got at a thrift store for a buck. (Yes, I had to google that to find out what it really was!) The light blue patchwork ones used to be a jacket of my sister's. The darker pink and blue patchwork one is leftover bits of a quilt and lined with an old denim shirt that got to be too big for me. Reuse, renew, recycle!
-
Could you do a presentation with prices? The Indian prints looks very interesting. Are we allowed to buy them----is that breaking any laws? You have a great audiance and you know we all like to help each other. Let's check with Sluff. Being "green" items make them even more appealing. :2thumbsup;
-
Yes I would love to buy some I need more grocery getters....... there beautfull
-
Lovely jbeany!
-
I've been selling them for 20 or 25 dollars. The ones with magnetic closures or other clasps or decorations run me a bit more in materials, so I charge a bit more for them. Send me a PM is you want one - I can send better pics of what I have made, or make something in a specific color. Everything is sized differently - I make the sizes depending on the size of the material sample - no point in wasting any of it!
-
The California Science Center borrowed one of my photos for a exhibit about Ecosystems - it was cool to be include with a bunch of great photos of Los Angeles! Mine is the Smokey the Bear photo (with smoke from last summers huge Station Fire burning in the distance.) It's nice to have my hobby actually be useful somewhere!
-
Very cool, karol!
-
Well, my spring cleaning/decluttering war is pretty much done, so I had to find something else to keep me busy. So I'm working on helping everyone else get organized instead, by making fabric storage bins to sell at my next craft show.
-
karol and jbeany, you are both talented.

I need those! How much are they?
How many would you like, hun? I'll send you some - I've only got about a quarter's worth of material in each! (I love freebies and thrift store finds!)
-
I need some of those too for my dvd collection. How much?

Latest photos of my orchids. They bloom for me twice a year and range in age from one to eight years old.

Thank you monrein for sharing your wonderful orchids with us.
They have such beautiful colours and quite magnificent shapes.

:flower; GORGEOUS monrein!!

My hobbies are counted cross stitch, which I have gotten back into with a vengeance since my job ended earlier this week and photography, especially of my grandson. My hubby is into trains big time, he has a room set up only for his trains and our grandson absolutely loves them. He can't play with them on dialysis days but tries to get to them as much as possible.
Hopefully this picture comes up okay, but it's our grandson and daughter with my hubby and the trains.

Pics of my latest project. I'm teaching a craft class for kids in June at Gilda's Club, so I've been working on a project I can do with them. We'll be making fingerprint jewelry. I'm not sure how well it shows up in the pics, but each word has my fingerprints stamped over them. The cutout fingerprinted words are then glued into the bottle caps and covered with clear resin. Then it all gets strung on leather cording, with a variety of beads. Should be messy, inky fun with a dozen kids!
-
This is what happens when I'm house-bound for two months with a fully stocked craft room....

I guess my no. 1 hobby would be collecting movies. I worked for Sony Pictures for a while (still do off and on) and they used to send me movies as a thank you.
I also read like crazy. If I don't have a book, I'm like an addict! My husband says I don't read books, I devour them! :lol;
I love my garden! I grow herbs and vegetables. I'm no good at flowers (unless they are the edible kind) so my husband takes care of the flowers and ornamentals. Between the two of us, I think our yard looks great! I have pics but I haven't figured out how to post them yet.
I currently have a cat (Tuula) and a dog (Timo). Timo and my husband are my "training buddies" for the Gift of Life Walk coming up in October.
I guess my job would be a hobby. My husband & I have a merchandising business. It works out great because I can pick & choose when I feel like working. I have several stores that I do on a fairly regular basis so I have gotten to know the management which always makes it easier when I have a new display to set up.
I try to keep busy otherwise I would sit and wallow in self pity over you-know-what!

I'm a gamer at heart - i have a ps2, ps3, xbox360, psp, gameboy. But pc gaming takes top spot.
I got into abit of rc models, but it gets pricey fast ! The one kit i bought (came with battery, remote control, servo) was a little over $200. Kits can exceed $1000, if i bought that my wife would not be a happy camper ! :rofl;
Movies is another great past time. I love watching movies.

My dad got all gung ho for RC airplane kits when I was a kid. We didn't have much money, so the expense was a huge chunk of our budget, but my mom scrimped and saved and bought him one for Christmas one year. My sis and I were still in early elementary, so we heard an endless litany of "Don't touch! It's not a toy! You'll ruin it if you play with it!" all through the building process. He meticulously put it together and then patiently waited for spring to come to clear a nearby field of our usual 6 feet of snow, so he'd have a proper runway. On the big day, we all trooped out to watch, terribly excited and impatiently waiting for the fabulous little plane to soar.
It crashed into smithereens seconds after take-off.

That's one reason I have never gotten into RC airplanes. You put all that work into an airplane, then wreck it in a single crash. I did have a cheap little RC helicopter, and I crashed it on one of it's first flights. I tried to repair it, but could never get it to work right again. I gave up on all RC flying models at that time. All my models sit on shelves where they are (usually) safe.

Ok, i was contemplating getting into rc aircrafts, but reading the experiences from you guys, I think that money would be better spent elsewhere. I'll just stick to rc cars. :clap;

I think the boats would be fun - less prone to crashing immediately, and able to be rescued with a fishing net!

this would be cool :
