Title: Menstrual periods post-transplant
Post by: KarenInWA on January 20, 2012, 07:17:08 AM
Hi Ladies (I'm assuming only ladies will be reading this!)

I had my tx on 11/23/11. On 11/24 I had a period that lasted about 7 days. While I was on dialysis (for 7 months) I never missed a period until I started taking the pill continuously - in hopes that I could avoid them entirely - and I still would have a period about every 3 months or so. In fact, I had a period about 2 weeks before my tx. Periods during HD, as some of you know, is a literal PITA, and the increased flow does not go well with anemia. Now that I am post-tx, and no longer on the pill, I haven't had a period since that one in the hospital. This is unusual for my usually period-happy body.  Now, don't get me wrong, I'm liking it, I'm just curious as to why this is happening!

I brought it up to the dr's at the tx clinic, but they suggested I contact my gyno/PCP. I haven't done that yet. And no, I am not pregnant. Sex is such a small, infrequent part of my life that there is NO way that could ever happen. I have given up on men in my geographical area, because it is apparent that they do not like me and only want to use me for a little bit of sex, then throw me away like yesterdays's garbage. My tx is way too precious to me to get myself wrapped up in that crap ever again. It just ain't worth it!

What have your experiences been with periods post-tx?

i haven't had a period since July, I think.  it's been a while! and I am not pregnant.  my periods have always been sporadic and intermittent.  my hematologist said that my lack of periods may be my body's response to my severe anemia, by conserving my blood. ( I hadn't heard that one before).  my gyno just said 'it happens in patients with kidney disease'. so in other words no big deal.  so, I am enjoying my period free life, although this also means that my chances of getting pregnant are very low.

I was the opposite. I didn't have my period for quite a while before transplant (often happens in kidney failure) and once I had the surgery it came back. Yuck! It has since stopped again although I am not yet in menopause. Due to horrific cramps, it's certainly a blessing. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Mine stopped while I was on prednisone (pre-ESRD), so I wonder if it's the meds that are doing it to you.

Yep!  I have PMS.  I wish I knew how to get over it.

OMG, I can't imagine having periods while on HD!  Makes me glad I'm too old for that nonsense. :P

I have been regular while on PD, HD and post transplant.  Periods have gotten shorter and lighter, but may be my age rather than the transplant.
