Title: You-Hooooo!!! Any living donors out there?! :0)
Post by: MrsFishy on January 19, 2012, 05:25:24 PM
I am in the process of hopefully being approved to donate a kidney.  I have done lots of research and know what the risks are, the pain to expect (well, as much as one can know to expect without having actually personally experiencing it 1st hand yet), all of the possible tests/procedures to go thru to get to the final stamp of approval, etc..  The one thing I have not found so far though is if there are any dietary restrictions I will need to follow after it is all said and done.  Will I need any type of medications, need to drink more fluids than people with 2 kidneys, etc.????  I'm thinking maybe there are none since I haven't found any info on this anywhere.

Thoughts?  Thank you for your time!

Wow, Ms Fishy, You rock for sure!  I nor my husband are in need of a kidney, but Im sure someone on here who deals with it can answer.  You are so very generous to offer this gift.  God Bless you for this kindness!

There should be a living donor coordinator at your tx center who can give you this sort of advice!

MrsFishy, from what I know about the process, it is a good idea to drink more fluids as hydration is key for both you and your recepient! Also, once you have one kidney, they prefer it if you avoid NSAID's (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) which include ibuprofen, naproxen and others.

As for food restrictions, I don't know of any. I think you're pretty safe there.  :)

Thanks!  I will be sure to also ask the coordinator, too. :)

I got my packet today that I have filled out and have set to return tomorrow. Sounds like I'd better get my annual physical and mammo scheduled, too, since I'm over due and these will be needed anyway for the approval process.

Oh, I'd forgotten about that!  I really should get into the habit of remembering it.

Apart from the meds as mentioned by Karen, I haven't had to change anything.  I don't drink any more (or less) than I did before donation and I have no dietary restrictions.
