Title: Weight Issues and PD
Post by: beachbum on December 23, 2011, 09:31:36 AM
I've always been thin all my life. I'm 6'2" and almost always been under 200lbs. I was even 170 until I was in my late 20's. Right now my dry weight is about 228 but my weight swings wildly so it's hard to say. But it's strange trying to lose weight for the first time in my life.

A healthy weight for me would be somewhere about 185. That may seem thin to some but in America the average weight has jumped so high it's not "normal" to be thin anymore. Regardless I have at least 40lbs to go to get to my goal weight.

I was told by a nephrologist a few years back that PD doesn't work well at all if a person is over 200lbs. My PD nursesb insist weight doesn't matter but I'm wondering if this is why I have to use red and green bags and I struggle to pull off fluid?

The other night I had chili for dinner. I didn't add any salt but chili is full of sodium by nature. I had two good sized bowls of it. I knew I would pay for it and I did. I ganied a lot of weight just in fluid and my ankles and feet swelled. I jumped from 226 to 236 in 24 hours! Some of this was the PD fluid I'm carrying, but still.

When I stopped PD for about a week my weight dropped from 235 to 221 in 3 days! It's like the PD fluid alone is putting weight on me. I know some people gain a lot of weight but that's the last thing I want. My goal is to get under 200 and see if PD does indeed work better. But I feel like the PD is keeping me from losing weight. I still have to eat a lot of protein so I have to make sure I'm eating good. Anyone esle struggled with weight after starting PD? I was hoping to actually lose weight, not gain a ton.

Yo beach, not sure if I'm typical, but I dropped about 10 pounds when I started PD. I'm sitting at about 175 right now, and that's up from my norm of 172. But it is Christmas  I was bouncing around a lot when I started PD, but did settler down to the low 170's. HTH

I have gained weight on PD. It's a problem. Although some of it is the weight of the fluid I know I have gained real weight too. All you can do is exercise and eat healthy.

You get about 500 calories a day from pd. So you should base your calorie intake on that...

@beachbum  LOL i  having the same problem   Most of my solid weight gain i believe comes from stress.  I started on hemodialysis and weent back to college. this is when i started to gain solid weight. i think the weight gain is from stress eating.  i switch to pd after college. my weight fluctuates i'll get off between 70 and 71 kg.  then all of sudden it will jumb up to 72 and a high 73 kg. I think part is the fluid and you have to be careful with salty foods. but my best weight is between 140-145 pouds(68 kg). i think the difficult thing for me is watching sodium and eating better. I find with that because i want to slim down. Because i still carrying stress weight. I feel your pain because I know it hurts my self-esteem. I would try to analyze your diet. You sodium is hidden in a lot of foods.

My husband definately weighed more on PD than Hemo. I believe that is just the norm, but do check and make sure you are not obsorbing too much!  But yes, I believe you can weigh more on PD.  Less restrictions on what you can eat, whereas hemo there are alot of restrictions!

I have lost weight on PD as well. But I have to admit that I had a serious water retention problem that led me to get onto PD asap. My weight dropped from 230-240 to 206-210.
