Hello everyone,
I have NOT been doing PD for the past 1 1/2 mponths due a catheter blockage(?) issue. Cathflo, manipulation didnt work out for me. So my nephro recommended doing laporoscopy to check the catheter and/or re-insert a new one. I am scheduled on January 3rd. I went to a pre-op appointment and an anesthesiologist said they will be giving me general anesthesia during the surgery which will take 1-1.5 hours. (On my first PD insertion procedure in Aug 29th, all they gave me a local anesthesia and was not sedated at all. )
Is this normal to be given general anesthesia on a laparoscopic procedure? I thought local is enough.
Can you please share your PD insertion experience (surgery, laparoscopy, or XRAY)....

My VS put me out completely when she inserted my cath. And it certainly was not laporoscopic, I have a 6" scar from my belly button south from it. The procedure did take 1.5 hours, I thought it only took 30 seconds because I was out for the whole thing.

i just had my pd cath inserted last friday and i was put completely under as well. it felt like two seconds but it was about 1 -1 1/2 hrs that i was out. i have stitches by my belly button about 4-5" long. my doc told me from the get go i would be put completely under. he never gave me the choice of local anethesia

I was completely out for my catheter insertion and it was laproscopic. I say enjoy your nap.

all 6 surgeries i have had involving my pd cath i have been completely under.. either anesthesia or heavy sedation but still... 4 have been laproscopic

Both my original PD (and the replacement, four months later) were done under general.

My lap surgery (to fix my old catheter that is blocked) was done last Tuesday, Jan 3, and yes you are all right - under general anesthetics. I was soooo nervous when they tied me up on the operating table! :o
Anyways, it took more less 1 1/2 hours and still so groggy when i woke up. My surgeon paid me a quick visit at the surgical day care and said it was successful - he was able to remove adhesions (?) from the catheter. He said I got lot of adhesions probably due to a previous surgery (probably from the Caesarian section 10 years ago with my first child?)
Went to do a flush as well today and yesterday and there is really blood still coming out of my fluids... but my neph said my blood works are ok so I will start PD again tonight! :bandance;

+1, I was completely under for my catheter insertion yesterday. Not sure how long it took, but the surgeon told me before I was put to sleep that it was going to take 1/2 an hour. Oh yeah, it was done laproscopically as well

I have had 3 laproscopic procedures for my catheter, and I was completely under for all. The first one they did not get all the air out of my belly, and I had air bubbles travel to my shoulder. I thought I was having a heart attack! It was awful. I advise any and all who have this done to ask the doctor to make sure he has gotten out as much air as possible! Make sure you are also getting all the air out of your tubing when dialyzing. Any air trapped in the tubes can cause the same issue of air getting stuck in your shoulers, it's so painful, and difficult to get rid of!
