Title: CCPD and residual fluid - not edima
Post by: Joe on October 31, 2011, 12:31:38 PM
Been doing CCPD for about a month now, and have a question. Because of my peritoneal efficiency, i do a manual exchange in the mid-afternoon and leave that 'in' until I connect to the cycler at bedtime. Several weeks ago, I noticed that i was getting some drain heading into that exchange when I should have been empty all day. In talking with my PD Nurse, she thinks it's because of the way my cath is in the peritoneum. They recommended I do a manual drain cycle after the normal cycle was finished. I have been doing that, and getting anywhere from 400 - 1000 ml off. That has typically left me dry for the day, i.e., no drain leading into my manual fill.

To my question; does anyone else experience this leftover after their cycle? If it's because of where the cath is, why does the manual get it out when the automatic cycle doesn't? Inquiring minds, and all that stuff.

TIA for any insight you all may have.

Are you still asleep when your cycler is finished? If so, it could be the way you are laying when it is draining. I am usually up when my last drain is going, so I usually drain everything out and have a last fill of 100ml.
Do you have a last fill? You might just be draining all of that off when you do the manual.

I am typically asleep when I get the last drain, but even when I start the manual I lay back down and half the time go back to sleep. So position should be similar. And I do not do a residual fill, I'm technically supposed to be empty during the day.

You should try sleeping in different positions. When isleep on my right side it drains well. If isleep on my left side it beeps. It all depends on the position of the end of the cath. And if it.is sewn down in there and in what position.

Joe I have a question for you. Why are you left dry all day. My husband is on the Baxter cycler and his last fill is 2000 extraneal, he keeps this in till tea-time and then does a manual which lasts till he goes back on the cycler. Am I to understand that you just fill with your afternoon manual. Seems strange.

billybags, my Rx is such that I am dry, or supposedly so, all day. I would do the manual fill in the afternoon, and that would carry me until I go back on the cycler at bed time. I think my neph was comfortable enough with the efficiency of my dialysis with this setup that I didn't need the extra fill in the morning. We'll see if that continues.
