Title: Question about Tylenol

Quick question..is there any certain reason that my PD nurse told me to take Tylenol(acetaminophen) over taking Aleve(naproxen) for pain? I've always taken Aleve for cramps and whatnot. I told her that I usually take Aleve. So any certain reason why she said Tylenol instead?

Aleve, ibuprofen and other drugs in their class (NSAID's non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) are harmful to the kidneys and have been known to cause kidney failure. Tylenol (acetaminophen) is not harmful to the kidneys,  or at least less so. But, it can be harmful to the liver. If you read the fine print on the package, it should say something about "should not take if" and kidney disease will be there.

I agree that it sucks that we can't take NSAIDs esp. for cramps.  Long before I started D, I got a prescription from my PCP for Vicodin.  I take one at night when cramps rear their ugly head.

Asprin and Naproxen can also interfere with BP control. Vicodin has been my friend when I've had any kind of pain, but I use it sparlingly as it can become additictive  :(

I take aleve for joint issues, especially in the spring and fall when everything is so damp.  I know that NSAID's can cause issues with the kidneys, but I didn't figure it mattered, since I have no function anyway.

A few years ago, I was prescribed naproxen for tendinitis, and the pharmacist refused to fill the prescription until she got the ok from my nephrologist
