I come to treatment today, they hook me up, the doctor asks me a billion questions because he only shows up once a month, and then a tech asks me if I want a hamburger. Here is the catch 22; Who brings binders with them to treatment if they don't plan on eating during treatment. I mean to be fair I usually carry eight in a pill fob on my key chain but I didn't refill it today.So I get a hamburger and a lecture. Grrrrrrrr!

Yeah, I usually keep some extra on me and when I don't I eat anyway. But, I hear you about the dietition bringing food but no pills.

I can not believe they give you hamburgers, how naughty is that. I know when my husband went on to hemo for a few months they would get toast, but hamburgers wow. Hope you enjoyed it.

Oh my gosh, hamburgers? I get a few soda crackers from my unit. :P

I don't think a hamburger is the best thing to have while on dialysis, binders or no binders..

When I was on the evening shift last year, I used to get a Tim Horton BLT sandwhich without the Bacon and they were kinda Hmmmmmmmmm weeeeeeell, I guess we'll let you, although I could tell they really didn't like me eating a sandwhich, but hey, ya gotta eat, I was there over the supper hour and I was so hungry. Having a very early supper by 4 pm in the afternoon, I could only eat a light snack to pull me through til about 7 pm. Having D til 10:30 pm at night, it was too long of a stretch......
Anyways, I got the sensing feeling, they didn't like patients eating a full meal while on the machine, only a snack. So once I switched to the morning shift, it was so much easier not to have to worry about eating supper anymore while dialysizing, I'm home by lunch now and can eat my lunch in peace LOL :P

I would faint if our staff brought in hamburgers. One day the dietician started a "new" program to boost our albumin and they brought in hard boiled eggs and apple juice. Now, how do I crack and peel an egg with one hand?
I am first stick so I bring in dry cereal and a drink to eat.

Hubbys clinic never had a "patient - appreciation" day. You are a lucky one! They were ademant about eating while D. And adament about diet. And ademant about people visiting with patients, and ademant about THIS & THAT!
Thank God, we don't have that "Problem" anymore!

Hey people what is wrong with hamburgers?? I used to eat those all the time until I got sick of them. My diection thinks there is nothing wrong with me having a hamburger. They have alot of protein in them. Now a cheeseburger, that is a problem.
As your clinic giving you a hamburger. WOW. No the hemo clinic I did go to when I was on hemo for a few months, no food at all was allowed whatsoever.

They tell me a plain hamburger is fine. If they said no food at all then I would have to change clinics.

I get a protein bar and that's only because I started D in February very sick...extremely anemic and hemoglobin of 4 and I am much better but still slightly on the anemic side. My unit doesn't give out food or drinks, generally. If someone needs a tylenol or gets really thirsty they will give you a dixie cup of tap water. We can however bring our own drinks and food. One guy eats a ton of snacks and we all tease him but no one stops him unless his machine acts up or his blood pressure goes wonky.
I can't imagine not being allowed to have visitors at all though. We can...they either have to leave when it gets time for people to be coming off machines, or they must "suit up" like the staff. My husband always takes me in, gets me set up and tucked in and often stays a half hour to an hour with me.

I was thinking the same thing not because of the diet but eating on the machine is dangerous I thought....because your blood flow in your body gets reverted to digestion instead of dialysis...and if you throw up or pass out while on the machine it could be more of a problem with a big burger in your body....
Glad they appreciate the patients one day out of the year!!! We do keep them in business! HA!

That was my thought too. There's a whole thread here somewhere on eating while on dialysis. We're not allowed anything more than a small snack. I usually get a cup of tea, if my fluids aren't too bad, and I might get a couple of digestive cookies if I feel like it, but that's it. That's all provided by the unit, btw..

i have been in 2 clinics since this started, and neither allowed food while dialysing UNLESS its the type of diabetes u have to eat every so often.
The first clinic i went to didnt even allow gum or candy, but its because someone choked to death on the machine (probably due to staff not carring at all there.. thats why i left)
this clinic, which is great, doesnt allow to eat or drink, but they give us ice chips, and allow us candy and stuff.... also have patient days but give us stuff before or after treatment. I love my clinic i go to now. even if they dont let me have my drinks hehe
Oh and one time at my current clinic they handed out popsicles while we were on the machine, i think for showing up that day for labs or something like that... cant remember lol

Yes, I got a toy. It was the slinky dog from Toy Story. It looked like a happy meal toy.

People eat at my dialysis center everyday. My first day I saw this fat guy chow down on fired chicken and fried hash brown potatoes. Most people just snack a little. I don't eat at all. I will drink a little water near the end of the drainage to avoid cramps.

You are probably making the wisest decision, Whamo, not to eat anything while D. But I feel it should be a personal choice to those who are doing D. Would I want Hubby to chow down on Fried chicken and hash brown's? No, but it would be his choice! Now that we are doing D. at home, we generally eat before he goes on. He gets a few snacks when he wants, but hardly ever does that as of late!

At the dialysis center here at Christmas the staff hand out home made cookies and halloween we got a chocolate bar.
I generally eat a bit on dialysis usually a few cookies, an apple and a glass of warm water and within the first hour I get on, so I'm not starving at 10pm when I get off.

For Halloween, we got a treat bag, cookie, and punch. All had choices for diabetic and non. Generally, there is a no eat or drink policy, with the exception of a couple of diabetics that need a light snack during their time on the machine.

They let you have Chocolate! Bonus! 'They' won't let me have chocolate :(

??? I don't get it. I'v been on D for a bit now (13 jr second go :beer1;},and any clinic in Portugal, Netherlands, Uk I go to we get tea twice, butties, bikkies. Wow must be lucky. On the other hand as fas as I know its better to eat during D cos of los of protein I thought. I'll go looking for that site someone mentioned. lol

I can't eat on the machine anymore it makes me sick so I don't other then water or something small.
We got popsickles once when it got really hot out this summer.
