Title: What are your quirks?
Post by: CebuShan on September 05, 2011, 09:42:35 AM
Do you have any quirks? Anything you do that others might think are a bit odd?

My quirk is that i like to eat soup out of a mug with a fork.   :lol;  I know it sounds strange but my grandmother used to fix soup for us and put it in a mug and give us a fork to eat the veggies. Afterwards we would take off with the mug and just drink the juice then leave the mugs on the front porch. (I think it was the only way my Grandmother could get us all together and slowed down long enough to eat lunch!)

Also, when I was a kid, I could not stand to have my food touch! It didn't matter that everyone told me that "It all goes to the same place". I was convinced that MY stomach had a compartment for each different kind of food! I'm not like that now but I still would prefer it if my food didn't touch!   :lol;

I have taken care of several kids that were like that and their Mom's were about at the end of their rope. It doesn't bother me because I know where they are coming from!    :rofl;

I have more now than pre-transplant.  Some combination of the personality shifting from the prednisone and the increased energy that comes with a transplant has brought out a lot of OCD tendencies that I never showed before.  I never used to care about a messy house or an unmade bed.  Now, the bed gets made as soon as my feet hit the floor.  I can tolerate things out of place on the kitchen table or the coffee table in the living room for about 30 minutes before I have to get up and straighten up.  Other people littering makes my teeth grind - I'm usually the one scooping all the left behind junk mail up from the top of the mailboxes at my apartment and hauling it off to the trash.  And if I see something out of place in my own house, or think of something that needs to be sorted or cleaned - I'll do that before I go to bed or I won't be able to sleep any how.  (Sorting the socks and tights drawer at 2 am comes to mind.)

Not that being a bit of a clean freak is a bad thing - but it's so far from what I was on D, it's laughable!

(I paused in the middle of typing this to straighten up my desk.  Now I think I'll dust it.)

I've always been anal about a clean house, but most particularly if I'm going somewhere. What if burglars broke in? I'd be so ashamed if the house wasn't clean! (Can you imagine burglars standing around critiquing the cleanliness of a house? "Wow, what a pigsty. Let's break in next door instead.") Or what if I got killed in a car accident while I was away? SOMEone has to come and go through the house and I'd be mortified from beyond if everything wasn't spic-and-span!

I won't chew gum in public.

I'll sit and smoke in public, but won't walk and smoke.

I love, love, love the smell of musty mildewed basements.

I just asked Andy if I had any weird quirks he could think of. His reply? "You ARE a weird quirk." Thanks, hon!

Yes, I have some quirks..... I don't like touching buffet table serving spoons and then eat my food. I have to use hand sanitizer after  I touch the tongs and spoons before I eat my own food. Same with doorknobs, esp in washrooms, I will open a door using my shoulder and push it open rather than touching the knob. Maybe its more of a phobia, I don't know, but I don't want to get sick, so I try not to touch 'surfaces' in public areas    :urcrazy; Call me crazy, but I am an avid user of hand sanitizer and carry it with me wherever I go      ;D

You know, I honestly can't think of one.  I hope I have a quirk or two and am not so totally boring.

Cordelia, you are certainly not alone.
I am exactly the same and have a tiny “antiseptic gloves in a bottle” in my handbag.
But I don’t think of it as a “quirk”, considering that we are in ESRF;
we are much more vulnerable than healthy people
and therefore have to be much more careful about infection etc.,

Another thing is that – apart from a little mirror, eye-shadow & powder -
I also have in my handbag a little magnet to check-up whether railings, gates, statues etc. are iron
or whether anything else has been added, in case there are any doubts.

I also carry in my hand-bag ear-plugs I use in the public library to concentrate better
and of course a tiny little compartment for emergency anti-hypertensives
plus an emergency mobile phone with instructions how to use it
because I have not needed it yet (touch wood).

I am also drawn to pianos and check them for their tonality etc.,
and try to play a little...and of course I handle every piano very carefully.

I also have a little list of all the music-scores I am looking for,
in case I pass a music-library/music-shop
and a little list of special Videos/DVD’s I have been looking for,
just in case I see a special Charity shop which still sells Videos etc...

Oh my gosh ... Get out of my head!  I honestly could have written this, except I can't blame it on having a transplant.  But thirty minutes is a bit too long - most things get whipped away or put in their rightful place as soon as they're finished with. I don't think I've always been this way though; it is something which has gradually increased the older I get.  I have even been known to make the bed around anyone (Blokey, cat, whoever) who happens to be in it at the time.  Having said that, this room (with the computers) is the ONE room in the house which is a cluttered chaotic mess and I don't care (except for the occasional day when I do, and then it gets blitzed and Blokey misplaces lots of things on his desk).

I insist on keeping the teaspoon in the mug/cup when I drink tea (milk must go in first!) or coffee.  Even in public, and even in quaint little Victorian tea shops.

I thought there might be more than just house-related OCD and teaspoons, but I can't think of anything.  This means that either a)  I'm not quirky in other ways, or b) my quirkiness is so ingrained that I don't see it as being quirky.  I shall ask Blokey this evening.

 ;D  Hey, at least it's organized in here!

Kristina, you can use that magnet for buying second-hand silver jewelry, too.  If it's real, it won't stick.  If it's fake, cling city.  (Just don't test the clasps - they tend to have steel springs in them.)

I think I may have gotten a bit OCD over the years. I also think I may be bipolar, but that's another thing all together......

Some of my quirks are taught, I think, but not all... my ex used to say I was weird for how I did the dishes.  Everything had an order; silverwear and cups/glasses first, then plates and bowls, then pots and pans, then ashtrays.  Whenever he did them, they were just all thrown in together.  Sometimes he'd fill the sink and leave it.  That would bug me.  I'd have to drain the sink, arrange all the dishes, and do them my way.

I put everything away in the same place all the time.  It's to a point where if my mom uses my tv, and doesn't put my remote back in the spot where I leave it, I don't know where it is.

I cannot walk and talk on the phone at the same time.  I think that's an attention thing. I can only focus on one thing at a time.  I have no idea how I managed working in tech support for 10 years, where you generally have to say one thing on the phone to the customer, while typing something totally different in your logs at the same time.

I too have gotten slightly OCD . I think it's more so the fact that because we have so much medical stuff around the house, I feel awfully cluttered. I like space. My daughter hates it when I'm on the computer and talk out loud to what I'm doing. This one is so dumb but.... my husband sets our sofa pillows up more vertically, and I like them horizontally. I will go behind him and change every time he does it. Now that's OCD! lol

Oh, that reminded me of the toilet roll!  If Blokey changes the toilet roll he puts it on so it's 'under' but I insist on it being 'over' so I change it.  If I'm in somebody else's house and the toilet roll is 'under' I WILL have to change it to 'over' before I can use it.

Explanation here: http://currentconfig.com/2005/02/22/essential-life-lesson-1-over-is-right-under-is-wrong/

So, who's in my 'Over' club then?!

Of course "Over" is the correct way, just look at the roll. "Under" looks wrong!   :2thumbsup;

I thought that was the way EVERYONE did dishes!   :lol;  That's the way my Grandmother did them & the way my Mom does them. You mean to tell me, there's another way?!   ???   :rofl;

WOW,
 Im really going to have to admit here that I might be quite jealous of many of you. in the OCD aspect. I can only dream of everything being perfectly clean. I guess Im too laid back and relaxed. And Im also very tired. My home isnt filthy, but it isnt spic and span. I have a really hard time with my daughter. She is 5 and is also being raised by her dad and grandma, who, no offense to any of those who are, dirty hillbillys, to the point of not being able to walk through the house!
 I mean its bad. To the point of not even wanting to sit on a couch there. EVerything gets thrown on the floor there, food is all over the floor. I have seen a dirty diaper on the floor, and a banana peel on the floor. IT is baddd. Thank God my house is no where near that.
 I have a hard time with my daughter. I cant get her to be clean no matter what. When she goes to grandmas keep things organized is not a big deal.

I guess my quirk is my mom putting the dish pan over the garbage disposal. So annoying. lol

Oh, I'm not necessarily that *clean* ... it's just that everything has a place and if it's not in its correct place then the world is unbalanced.  I have the occasional odd cobweb in the corner and a gathering of dust on the tellybox.

;D

Yes, there's a big difference between OCD organized and OCD clean!

As for over or under  - I don't pay any attention, as long as there's one on.  That little brown tube is a huge pet peeve of mine.  I promise, changing a t-paper roll does not cause brain damage, infertility or hair loss.  Just do it!

CRACKING MY KNUCKLES!!!!!  It is a very bad habit I have, but I have always done it as long as I can remember!
And this may be a little gross to some, but I shoot liquid out from under a gland under the tongue.  People I work with don't know how to do it, but I DO!!!!!    :rofl;  :rofl;  :rofl;

Use to be a cleaner, but really have not done it to my satisfaction in past couple years!  Don't have many people coming over and I really don't have time, to be honest!  So I don't do a thorough job!   :thumbdown;

P.S. Good thread by the way!!!

lol u people look sane next to me... i have tons...
i cant touch raw wood, chalk, gooey stuff makes me sick, like lotion eww
when i am walking in a store i touch shirts and stuff to feel the fabric,
i love the smells of gas, oil, rubber, plastic, man sweat lol
i touch the tips of my fingers repeatedly in order,
i count alot of things around me at random, like the tiles on a floor for example.
i too dont like my food touching, and if im eating something soft and there is a hard spot i cant finish, same as opposite.
i cant do anything if im smoking, i fear dropping it.
if i touch something with one hand, i must touch it with  the other
i clean my glasses off every few mins
i cant touch stuff when my hands are wet
when i write something, it has to be perfect or i start over.

im a freak too many to list, this is just the first few that popped into mind!

Oh, I'm with you there! Rice pudding, yuck! Or fruit in jello, no thank you! Smooth foods should be smooth.

when i write something, it has to be perfect or i start over.

When I write to my aunt (real letters) I type it all out first 'cause it's faster, then I write it out. Let me make a mistake, do I cross it out? No. It's a good way to get writer's cramp.

No, just my television.  I suppose that would be another quirk I have (using words that don't necessarily make sense/exist.)

I reuse the same cup over and over again for months on end, without washing it.  I keep this cup in the fridge, whether it is empty or half full, it gets to the point where there is soooooo much grime on the inside (juice stains, pop stains, ...) that i still don't wash it but continue drinking out of it.   :rofl; :rofl;

One time my wife got so fed up with how dirty it was, she just washed it for me.
