My name is Pam. I've been lurking here for several months and have to tell all of you that in a way this has been the best education I could ask for. So many of my questions have been answered but then it seems that for every answer 2 more questions appear.
I will soon be 56 yr. and have been a type 1 diabetic for 25 yrs. This is the cause of my kidney failure. I have stayed at 23% function for the last 5 yrs. but I know that can change at any time. So I take it one day at a time and try to be as educated as I can. Even though I have not a clue as to what choice I will make when the time comes.
On a personal side, I have been married 36 yrs. have 2 children and 3 GKDS. None of them live close. I have lived in Michigan all of my life. Have never really worked out side of the home. I guess not worrying about keeping a job can be a good thing. I am a home based seamstress so can do that on my own terms.
I may not post much, but will read here everyday to learn all I can. I just want to thank all of you for the insight and education you have provided.
:thx; Pam

Welcome Pam,
I'm glad your not just a lurker anymore, There is a lot of information here at IHD and it can get overwhelming but hang in there, there is no quiz at the end.
Thanks for taking the time to post an introduction, if you need any help all you have to do is ask a moderator or an administrator and we will be more than happy to help.

Welcome to our community, Pam! Of course, you have already made it yours by your time of lurking! Joining us now does mean that you have really appreciated what you have seen. I don't suppose I have to tell you anything about the website, but I do want to ask you to post some. Let us know what you are going through. When you want to vent, this is the place.
Tell us what you are doing to maintain your kidney function (in a different section, of course). I would like to hear that.
We are contemporaries, by the way, as I am now finishing off my 56th year, will be 57 next week.
Welcome again! :grouphug;
[Sluff, how dare you get your post in before me! They even had the audacity to tell me someone just posted before me and maybe I wanted to check before I posted mine!]

Hi Pam. Its great to hear from you. I am also 56 and not on dialysis yet but I am around 24% and counting the time. This is a great site where you hear things as they are and where you can share your concerns without anyone thinking that it is no big deal.
(others have been there and they can help you). Please keep in touch. Let us know how things are going. Have any of you kids talked to you about donating a kidney? :welcomesign;

Pam, thank you so much for making yourself known. Please post a question if you have one. We all learn by sharing. I hope you have a good support system. Even with the best support system, family and friends don't know what it is like to be on dialysis. So, come here anytime to learn and laugh.

:welcomesign; Pam, from another 56 year-old in the community! I have been on Peritoneal dialysis for 19 months, couldn't have made the choices I have made without this site to educate me. Best of luck .

Hey Pam....I don't want to be blamed for starting a "clique" in the IHD website.....BUT.....there seems to be quite a group of 56 yr olds! I guess....we rule....so the rest of you can drool! Welcome to what I call..."my comfort zone". I live just north of you in Minneapolis, :cuddle; married 38yrs...and SEVEN amazing grandchildren! So happy to meet you! :welcomesign;

Welcome to IHD, Pam!
I'm in Michigan, too. Are you a fellow troll (under the bridge!) or a Yooper? I'm a type 1 diabetic, too. I didn't find this site until after my doc said I already needed dialysis, so you are one step ahead of me!

Welcom, Pam! :welcomesign; Nice to have you here with us! :grouphug;

:thx; To all of you for the warm welcomes! I have not started dialysis yet but I know that everything I have learned from this awesome site will help me to make the best decisions. My support team is very small and 99% will fall on DH. He tends to over react with everything so that is another post in itself! I think one of my biggest problems is going to be the diet. From what I am understanding the diabetic diet and the renal diet are pretty opposite of each other. My goal right now is to keep the blood sugar under control to preserve what function I have left and some days that is an hour to hour job.

Welcome, Pam! Glad to have you here. This site does have a lot of great information, I know it has been a great help to me and it makes me feel like I'm not so alone.
You may not have as much trouble with the diet as you think, before I was on dialysis they had me limit protein to save what kidney function I had left, but once I started dialysis they had me increase the protein because dialysis takes protein out of your system. My sister is diabetic and now we're eating the same things, high protein and low carb.
Ask any questions you want, and keep posting! :welcomesign;
