Title: hi everyone
Post by: mcclane on July 21, 2011, 02:25:48 PM
not sure where to begin, i started off on PD over 7 years ago.  I was on that for little over 3 years when I received that special call from the hospital that a transplant was available.

that was the most exciting time of my life.  After transplantation, I had so much time I literally didn't know what to do with myself.  Wind the clock 3 years later, and the hospital has informed me that the transplanted kidney is on its last legs (bk virus).  Back to PD i go (that was last year june).  I was on PD until apr of this year, due to the fact that the peritoneal membrane has lost all of its effectiveness.  So now, it is home hemo.

there are advantages of home hemo over pd, such as a more liberal diet (ahhhhh diet pepsi !  :beer1;) but one huge downside is travelling.  I really enjoyed PD's flexibility when it came to traveling.  I know that you can go to dialysis centres for treatment, but you must pay up front first, and I honestly don't have that kind of cash; our province does reimburse (I believe it is around $500/treatment), but it takes at least 3 months before they send you a cheque, so in the meantime I could be out $1 - 2000 in the meantime.  So traveling is on hold.

Hopefully the hospital will call soon informing me that another kidney is available (been on the wait list for 3 years).

Welcome to the group, mcclane.  My story is similar to yours, but without the transplant.  I'm now on hemo and getting worked up for the transplant list.  Glad you found us and told us your story!

Hello McClane and welcome!   :welcomesign;

If NxStage is available to you, it is portable hemo and while air travel is not easy, traveling by car is not too bad.

Welcome McClane.  Like Looneytune, We do NxStage at home and is portable for travel.  We are planning a trip in fall for about 10 days and totally taking this machine with us.  It would be hard to fly with the supplies and all, but I don't like to fly, so it really works for us!

I really hope a transplant comes soon for you, but while you are waiting for it, give this NxStage a try.  If you learned PD, you can learn Home hemo too. I think you will like this Modality!  We certainly do!

Take care and keep posting,
