Title: Massages and PD

Has anyone ever been told they can not have a deep tissue massage?  The reason I ask is I am heading to Disney in a few weeks and called one of the spas down there to make an appointment for a massage.  After the appointment was made I got a call back saying they could not let me get a massage due to not having the insurance to cover if any incidents happened to where my catheter no longer worked.  The reason they gave is cause of increased blood flow with a massage.  It just seems odd to me it is just a massage.

Never asked. However, I wouldn't do deep tissue anyway. It can be very dehydrating and you can't drink properly. I would think you could get screwed up. Try aromatherapy or craniosacral.

I totally missed deep tissue massages when i was on PD. I did get a nice shoulder message once.....not the same but still felt nice.

I've never heard anything about it either.  I would ask your unit/doctor/nurses?

i had a similiar experience.  Last year (I was still on pd) the mrs and I went on a week long alaskan cruise in october.  Near the end of the cruise, the spa had a special on massages, so the mrs. signed us both up.

The cruise line had us fill out a questionairre, and asked some basic medical questions.  I indicated that I was on pd; the massuse had to ask if a massage was ok and it wasn't ok.  I can't remember the reason why not, but they refused to do the massage on me.

My husband had massages while on PD and never had any issues with his catheters.   He would receive a partial deep tissue on his back and swedish everywhere else.  I don't think the therapist understands that you do not have a catheter that is affected by blood flow.

He even had massages in the hospital under his nephrologist's care while on Hemo.  They were seated though due to the catheter. 

Get a note from your doctor or PD Nurse.  Do you use Wake Nephrology?

I see a nephrologist at UNC.  I did ask my dialysis unit when I went this week and was told there was no reason I could not have a deep tissue massage.  They didn't see any reason it would affect my catheter so I guess Disney is just being paranoid.  I can look at it this way they just don't get my money for that extra.
