Hello!
My boyfriend was diagnosed with ESRD in February after a bad bout of flu. He is 26 and this was really a bad surprise for both of us. His kidneys are small and scarred, so no biopsy was done to determine exactly why they crapped out, but my guess is long term, undetected high blood pressure. He was able to limp along on what little kidney function he had until last month when the bottom fell out. He just got his PD catheter put in last week and we're hoping to do the nighttime cycler and start looking for a donor.
Needless to say this has all sucked mightily. The doctor appointments, the dietary restrictions, the meds, the anger, the expenses, the depression and the exhaustion have weighed on us quite a bit. We were saving to move away from here, but that's on hold for now. Neither of us has family here or really close friends (we've lived here for 3 years), so the caretaking is pretty much on me. I'm looking forward to reading and asking and learning!

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome! Yes, the name is a Venture Brothers reference. It was going to be either Dr. Girlfriend or Mrs Peel from The Avengers. I'm fond of strong female action and comic characters.
The financial issues aren't too terrible. My boyfriend has insurance, so that certainly helps a lot, but I'm not working right now. Also, we don't know what our cost will be for dialysis yet.

Welcome to our community, drgirlfriend! It is always great when someone joins us because of concern for a loved one. I had no clue what Chris was talking about, so I was glad you replied! You have come to just the right place for information, support, encouragement, and even fun. You must check out the caregivers' section - there you will meet many who are looking after a loved one. You are now part of the wonderful IHD family :grouphug; Just keep reading and keep posting.
