As a smoker or a friend of one, do you feel disrespected by the public?

I did feel disrespected......BUT-now that I don't smoke,I can smell ciggerettes everywhere,I can smell smoke on the atm machine,every ashtray I walk by I smell from 10 feet away...smokers smell bad.
If I would have known how bad I smelled..I would have quit 25 years ago.I am so ashamed of myself for inflicting that smell on other people.How inconsiderate of the smokers,that smoke clings to everything!!
-
Bleeech. I have friends who smoke, and I still don't care if they feel disrespected. I'm all for making them stand outside and freeze in the snow and the rain if they want to light up.
-
Personal choice, I don't smoke and it doesn't bother me a bit if someone else does.
-
If you choose to smoke that's your business. Just don't subject me to it. If you're in my house you can't smoke.
You can go outside and smoke if you want to. I watched my grandmother die from emphysema, I was there when she was gasping for breath. My best friends mother died from lung cancer from smoking. My mom has mild emphysema but I know what's going to happen to her from watching my grandmother. I know first hand the agony of watching someone you love choose cigarettes over life. That's their decision and choice. Cigarettes are an addiction and it's not easy to give them up.
-
The right to breath clean air supersedes any right to smoke and dirty that air for others.
So it would be smokers disrespecting the public, not the public disrespecting smokers IMO. :o

You are very right-it is very hard to give them up.My husband and I quit together.I was a three pack a day smoker for 26 years.....I still want them from time to time-(like every day) but I am resolved to remain smoke-free so that is one hurdle we won't have to face come transplant time.
and how bad they smell helps me stay committed.
I wish someone would make food stink too!!

I smoke, I quit. I smoke I quit. I smoke I quit! I don't remember if I smoked today. Ya, I think I smoked today. I'll probably smoke tomorrow morning then quit the rest of the day. >:D :angel;
-
I don't smoke but I really don't have an issue if others want to. I do object if they want to smoke in my personal space because the smell and the smoke makes me cough and I just don't like it. However if others want to do that to their body... good for them.
The new rules to bring in smoke free bars and restaurants here have been a real boon. Of course now trying to walk into most city buildings sucks with the cloud of smoke and smokers out the front you have to navigate through to get to the front door..

I tried to smoke in college, way back before we knew the health risks; I had the neato little Lady Buxton blue leather cigarette box with matching lighter and everything. Fortunately, I couldn't stand it - I'd light one, blow a few smokerings, and then let it die out.
Fast forward 30 years: one brother (who never smoked) died of lung cancer, and 5 years later, another one (who smoked from his teen years on) did, too. I'm still a bit shell shocked.
-
I don't smoke, and I'm glad I didn't ever start. Okay there was that one summer when I was fourteen and I wanted to be a hippie, I smoked cinnamon sticks all summer (if you can believe it), but I've never smoked tobacco.
I have reduced lung function (about 50%) from vasculitis. The doctor told me if I had been a smoker I would have died. So I'm glad I didn't ever start.
I don't have any problem with people who do smoke, some of my very good friends smoke, but I do not let them smoke when they are around me, I just can't breathe at all around cigarette smoke.
-
I don't smoke and it bothers me because I have a bit of asthma....but I understand, though....

In company, I try and ask if anyone minds if I light up. Most of the time though, I do it in the car or when im home. I understand too.
-
I have no problem with anyone smoking, for years people could smoke almost anywhere so I'm used to it. If it bothers me I just move away.
I even remember Johnny Carson smoking on his TV show.
Air pollution causes many more respiratory diseases than cigarettes ever will.
At least you can walk away from second hand tobacco smoke, try that with factory, oil refinary & auto pollution. etc. Everyone is coming down hard on smokers & global warming increases every year & it's not from cigarette smoke.
If governments woulld put as much effort into cleaning up the air as they do to stopping smoking the Earth would be a much saferr place & maybe even global warming would cease.
I have never smoked.

i've smoked on and off for the past 12 yrs. recently i quit, i had my last cig christmas day.
it is so hard because i liked to smoke when i would drive. its getting easier.
i dont mind smokers that smoke outside. its being couped up inside with someone smoking that gets to me now.

I watched my Dad die from lung cancer - that will make you never want to even try. I don't care what others do; I try to take care of myself and let others make their own decisions.

I second that!
I do not really care if others smoke, just do not do it near me. I can not wait for the new law to kick start in England.

I'm ashamed to say that yes I smoke. About 7 cigarettes per day. I quit 3 years ago for nearly 12 months but started again I think because the urge to smoke was just as strong 12 months later as the day I quit.
I'm now seriously considering hypnosis!

:2thumbsup; Congrats, Tubes, keep up the great self-control, you can do it! Just remember how tough it was to quit and you don't want to go through that again~ I watched my children's father die of lung, kidney and brain cancer~ too young.
I started in college and quit for each pregnancy... and started again. Finally called it quits 15 years ago and now can't stand the smell of it! ( I would NEVER take another puff, too afraid of it, don't want to go through the quitting again!) Stay strong, Tubes! ;)

I quit smoking when I was diagnosed with kidney failure in July last year. It hasn't been easy and every day I have cravings. It's worse when I can smell cigarette smoke coz it makes me hungry for some. I would never subject anyone else to it but at the end of the day it's personal choice as Sluff says. For me, each day is a battle to resist lighting up. I use the money I save from not smoking to buy myself something nice each month and tell myself "If I was smoking, I wouldn't be able to afford this."

That is a great way to see the results of making yourself go without.

I have been an non smoker for a year Feb 20. I am ashamed to say that I was a rude smoker, I never gave non smokers a second thought, I will never smoke again, and can even believe what I must have smelt like
So yea I felt disrespected, but now I know why.

Another smoker here

I smoke then quit. Smoke under stress then quit. Now I've started again. I go outside to smoke. A pack can last me 5 days. Time to quit again cause I'm gonna see my grandchild for the first time and I definately don't want to smeel like a chimney. I'm a smoker and can't stand the smell of smoke inside or in a car. It's a bad habit and not easy to quit. I'm giving it up to the Lord and believe he will help me quit for good.

Keep the FAITH :2thumbsup;

i quit, 30 years ago. i don't care if you smoke, just not around me, i have asthma. and not in my house, i'll hand you an ash tray, you can go outside, snow, rain, etc. my daughter smokes, even the baby, when he comes over smells like smoke. if he's staying with me, i give him a bath. babies should smell like babies, not cigarettes. my son smokes, the 30 year old, the one i quit because of. colorado has a no smoking law, not in any building public building anywhere.(except cigar bars) which is good. which is not as restrictive as the city of boulder. no smoking within the city limits period. exceptions, your private car, with the windows rolled up or your home with the windows and doors closed. the major exemption to the state law is the casinos, and they are now trying to charge that. if the do maybe i'll go do a little gamboling. ;D

:thx; anja. And yes....I'm still smoke free as of today. :2thumbsup; I guess it helps that I havent gone to a bar since December. Every now and again I WANT one. Like when I walk past the breakroom at work. It reeks, but the smell brings back the craving. :thumbdown;
My mom and stepdad both smoke. They've told me several times...if I get a transplant they will quit smoking.
How ridiculous...I don't need that sitting on my shoulders. "I can save my moms life If I save my own" CRAP! ! ! ! !
