Title: Hi Everyone
Post by: Big Dan on June 04, 2011, 05:27:21 PM
Hi Everyone. Been on this thing for 15 months now. IT STINKS! 30 year retired Letter Carrier and  6 year Captain of Security at our local hospital in Northwestern New Jersey. Married 36 years , 2 sons, and a bunch of grandkids.
Was very active but can hardly walk at this point. I am quite depressed but I hold most of it inside. When I arrive at the center for my treatment I am a bit loud and I joke and kid around with everyone. Patients, and staff alike. I am  looking
forward to venting my inner frustrations here.  :waving; BIG DAN

Of course you're depressed.  Dialysis is depressing.  Sure, it can save your life and give you extra years with your family, something for which we should be grateful, I suppose, but it is a terrible burden.  Hiding your feelings is all very noble, and I am guessing that your family is grateful that they are spared your depression (people don't generally like to hear about others' fears and illnesses), but it takes a LOT of energy to hide your feelings...energy that you don't always have.  And that's where this site and all of its wonderful members can really make a difference to you.  You don't have to hide anything here.  You can bare your soul, and no one will judge you or chastise you.

I am concerned that a previously active man now has difficulty walking.  Can you tell us more about the nature of your kidney failure?  Do you have other medical problems that make it hard for you to walk, or is the dialysis you are receiving not good enough to drag you back to some semblance of health?  Depression is endemic in kidney patients, particularly in those who are not being well-dialyzed.  Are you happy (well, maybe "satisfied" is a better word!) with the quality of your dialysis?

Welcome Big Dan!  I love your screen name.  As has already been stated, you have come to the right site.  Are you on "the list" and/or do you have any living donors set up?

Little story...when I first met my husband he was a police officer for one of our local hospital systems, University Hospital, in San Antonio.  I never realized how necessary security/police were at hospitals until I heard some of the crazy stories from him.  lol   That's s tough job.  :)  When he left the police force he started his own security company.  I hated it!  We are still in the security business, but we do camera monitoring for a few car lots in San Antonio overnight.  It pays our bills and allows me to work in my PJ's, but I still hate the security industry.  It's much harder than most would ever believe.

Welcome again!!   :waving;

G'day, Big Dan, and  :welcomesign;.  :ausflag; I'm much like you. I'm the joker at the unit. I keep the misery for when I'm alone. This is a good spot to share your felings. You're among kindred spirits.

Hi, Big Dan!

 :welcomesign;

Even though you are putting on a good face for your family, it isn't good for your over-all health to hide your feelings. This is a safe place to share, though.

Come often and make yourself at home!
