Not sure if this is the right board for this, but...
Because of my lowered immune system, I have had oral thrush in my mouth for about two weeks. Doctor (nephrologist) prescriped Nystatin swich & swallow medication to be taken four times a day for a week. Did that... nothing. Everything still tastes like cardboard. Even liquids. Hard to make yourself eat when it all tastes like gagging down cardboard. The medication ran out three days ago so I did some research online and have been gargling (swish & spit) a half-and-half mixture of Apple Cider Vinegar and Hydrogen Peroxide. I am tasting things better just a little bit.
I have a doctor's appt. (my regular doctor, not the nephrologist) tomorrow, so I'm going to check with him about it to 1) make sure this IS thrush, and 2) get him to prescribe something better to get rid of it. My pharmacist (Rite Aid rocks, btw) recommended Diflucan so I'm going to take to the doctor about that.
Has anyone had a problem like this? What worked for you?

I knew someone a long time ago who had that and I think they took a swig of lemon juice. Dont know if it every worked for them or not.

my mom got thrush often enough her doctor kept her a script for diflucan- my dad would check her throat and at the first sign she would take a couple of pills and it would go away. if your on steroids and have dentures it can happen more often- she didnt(couldn't) handle the spitting medicine.

I was on Nystatin post tx for 3 weeks, so one week sounds odd to me. When I developed CMV, I got a case of thrush shortly afterward and was put on mycelx logenzes that also treat thrush. Again this was for 3 weks. When I got CMV for a second timee I was automatically given Mycelex for 3 weeks again. Haven't had a problem since. Maybe one medicine doesn't work for you and another will

I had esophageal thrush from HIV infection and found diflucan rapid and effective.

dialysis worked for me.

I too had thrush post TX. I was on Nystatin swish and swallow (I did the swish and spit, which nurses said it was okay). I also did Mycelex.
I did that after each meal and at bedtime. You're not to eat or drink anything for at least 20 minutes after.
I was okay after about one week, but I was on it for 6-8weeks give or take.
Thrush is extremely dangerous. It is a fungal infection and only a antifungal med will cure it.
If not treated it will go into the esophogus and into the blood stream. As my coordinator told me upon discharge, "we need to keep you on these two meds (nystatin and mycelex) to get rid of the thrush. It's important we get rid of it completely if we don't it can go in your blood stream and that is EXTREMELY hard to get rid of."
Hope it gets resolved soon!
