I am getting a splitting headacbe just above my left eye after about 2 hrs of in center hemo. It then lasts until around 6-8 hours at an 8/10 on the pain scale. Then it is gone.
Has anyone had a problem like this-if so were you able to do anything to help?
I am starting to consider PD because of this.

I think it is when they remove too much fluid.
I have wondered myself about this.

yes i have these....i have been on dialysis for about 4 months....the first two months were okay...but for the last two months i have had the same thing...splitting headaches, mainly above my left eye....that are really bad, cause me to vomit and last for at least 4 or 5 hours after treatment...where all i can do is lay in bed...and i agree with the above comment, they usually occur when they take off more than 3.3 kgs......and yes because of this...and wanting a better more flexible schedule...i am switching to PD soon....i say go for the PD!

I have had them too. epo and iron gives me real bad headaches. I talked to DR and since my Hemoglobin and iron are in the target range he has ordered no more epo or iron for me and no more headaches. Now if my Hemoglobin drops low he has ordered a iron shot to bring it back up so right now don't need it. Have not had epo or iron since late last year cause labs look good . :yahoo; :yahoo;

Hey Dom, how you doing girl? Hadnt heard from you in a while. Everything going ok with you? Girl, I thought you'd be on PD by now! Something must have come up to delay it.
Amyloid, probably too much fluid removal! But absolutely, do PD or Home Hemo, you get better dialysis when you are in control of your own health. In-Center are set in their own ways and have to go by clinic's rules which sometimes seems like "Communism", Ha, ain't heard that used in years! But seriously, doing it at home is so much better cause you can do what is suitable for your lifestyle.
Hope your headaches subside!

Thanks to all of you who replied. I need the EPO because I am anemic-but I get headaches each session and I don't get EPO each session.
As far as for fluid removal, unless my dry weight is way off, they are not having to take off much fluid. Some days they only have to take of 1kg
but I still get the headaches.
And now my new group ins. will not pay for the neph, that comes to our center. I am going PD and switching centers if I can.

Good for you! Hope all goes well. Make sure your new insurance will pay for home dialysis just to be sure. Don't want any surprises here! lol

I was also suffering from headaches on a regular basis on hemo for awhile. My doctor was a little stumped about it, as he couldn't find a possible cause, and said it was common. I just got in the habit of taking a few Tylenol just before I go into the center for treatment (by suggestion of my doctor). It really makes a huge difference.

shut the UF a half hour before you get off the machine. that has helped my headaches. good luck!!

hello@lmunchkin...i am doing great...have been super busy with work, life, and Dialysis lol...yeah there is a hold up with the surgeon who is performing the stomach catheter operation....i really like this surgeon so i said i would prefer for him to perform the operation but if i don't hear from him soon i may have to go with someone else...but no worries, i am doing pretty good

The only thing that has helped with my headaches is sodium modeling, talk to your neph about it.

sounds like a fluid problem to me.
when i was on dialysis, if fluid gain was up there i requested lot of fluid off
first 2 hours , minimal fluid off last 3 hours.
usually worked pretty well

Could be from running at a blood flow that is too high. When BUN is removed too quickly, this can cause headaches. This is common with in-center dialysis. For more info on this...lookup Dialysis Disequilibrium Syndrome...DDS

I'm just wondering how is your blood pressure, before ro during dialysis. Frequent bad headaches area symptom of high blood pressure. That being said, dehydration can most definetly cause headaches and they're the really crappy kind.
