Title: PD Travel Emergency
Post by: george40 on May 13, 2011, 12:59:13 PM
Hello all, I have an emergency trip to take this weekend. Baxter says their warehouse in the area I am traveling to is closed already, so no shipment can be made. Also, they have not been able to track down my pd nurse for shipment approval! Grrrrrr (thats another issue) Does anyone know if the airlines, particularly jetblue, would allow me to check in 2 boxes of fluid. I am on pd manuals. Believe it or not, The travel dept. at baxter have no idea if they will allow it or not. My only other option is a 9 hour drive so I can take the fluid myself. thoughts?

9 hours? I'd drive for sure. For me it's an hour to the airport, another hour or two getting through security, pat downs and naked pics ("sir, what's that thing dangling from your belly?"). Then add flight time with hopefully no delays, then wait for baggage pickup, wait for a rental car...add it up and you won't be far off that 9 hours. Drive and you don't have the hassles and save on airfare and car rentals. Yeah, gas is expensive, but since you are doing PD you are probably the independent, do-it-yourself type anyway.

Now pack that car and get going!  :waving;

Thanks for the reply, I did decide to drive.

I don't think it is a problem to check two bags of solutions. Even two bags tied together, it is only a little over 50 lbs. Another option is to borrow from a clinic close to your arrival location; however, this needs to be arranged by your PD nurse.

You can check medical supplies through the airlines - but a letter of explination form your PD nurse would make it much smoother.  Anyway you drove.  Maybe get a letter at yout next visit for future last minute travel....
