Title: How Long did it take?
Post by: WfMonkey on May 06, 2011, 05:47:50 AM
I'm in need of a transplant, and since my GFR has halved in the past 3 months I feel like I'm in a race against time to get it done before I need dialysis. My brother has offered me his kidney, and I'm going back to the UK (where I'm from) to start testing on May 19. I live in Los Angeles and have the option of getting it done here. Although my brother's preference is England, can anyone tell me:
1. how long dis you wait for a LD transplant to be tested and scheduled? Is U$A faster than UK?
2. How long did it take to get back to work after surgery?

I'm in the US, my brother started testing in May of last year,( I started in April) he was approved in November, we had the transplant surgery Jan 3 of this year.
I think it's just how fast you can everything done. He is the CEO of a very large company, so it took him awhile to fit all the tests in.
As far as going back to work, I work at home and I started back around 2 1/2 months after surgery.
Hope this helps!!

American living in UK on dialysis. The time it takes to get over the operation varies greatly. If you and your brother are a match I don't think the time would be much different in UK than US.
Where in UK will you be tested?

1. We live in Los Angeles and my daughter was on dialysis for 3 years before she got a transplant from a living donor. The LA hospitals moved very slowly approving donors so we switched to Scripps Green Hospital in La Jolla - they approved Jenna quickly and worked up her donor in 2 months. I don't know about UK.

2. She wasn't working but her energy and health (she was 21 years old) was very good after 4 weeks and back to normal in about 2 months.

My husband got a cadaver kidney. He never felt bad while on dialysis and was back at work part time in less than two weeks and full time (10 hours a day) shortly after.

I was on dialysis for a month before I received a transplant... I just wanted to let you know that you should not be so worried if you have to do dialysis for  short time before you get transplanted.  It was not ideal but the anticipation leading up to the dialysis was awful... so please know that if you have to start D for a short time , it will be OK!!!
