Title: 19 yo niece kidney infection hospitalized for 2 days
Post by: ODAT on April 18, 2011, 06:14:16 AM
It has been a frustrating week. Quick rundown:

1. Wednesday niece severe pains in stomach / back area. Went to ER. Was told it was a 7 to 9 hour wait. Since it was 11pm, she decided to go home and go to a scheduled doctor appointment she had on Thursday.

2. Thursday she went to doctor and they gave her an ultrasound. Said nothing wrong. Sent home.

3. Mother (my sister) is in Florida until 4/19. Mom called her sister-in-law and said take her back there right now and make them do a urine test. Took her back, had urine infection. Gave antibiotics and was told to also take Tylenol.

4. Friday morning, after two doses of antibiotics, niece was nauseous and didn't eat much. Sister-in-law did not give her Tylenol that morning. A few hours later niece was complaining of headache. SIL took temp and it was 102.9 ! Called doctor and was told to go to ER.

5. Friday 2pm, took her to a different ER. Was seen right away, put on iv fluids and given catscan and blood culture done. Her white blood count was 24,500 ! Normal is 10,000. On Thursday they did bloodwork and it was only 10,000 (at doctor's office).  Catscan showed enlarged right kidney.

6. Friday 11pm she was admitted. Put on iv antibiotics and continued iv fluid throughout her 2 day stay.

7. Sunday afternoon after ultrasound showed kidney back to normal and wbc good, she was released. has to take antibiotics for 2 weeks.

We were told by the hospital and by chance or miracle, a doctor that was friends of the people my sister was with in Florida who gave advice (he is an advocate for patient safety!) all agreed that if she was tested and treated for a UTI, the infection would not have reached her kidneys.

Thank God she is now fine. Doctor said she shouldn't have future problems unless it turns out that she has a condition (forgot what they called it) where some urine goes up into the kidneys. Not sure what they do for that or if it could even be the case since she never would have had a problem if she got treatment faster.

so scarry!!!  It's seeming more and more we ALL have to be so educated on our own 'conditions' so as to recieve correct treatment...  Im SO glad that all is well now.  Glad she had people looking out for her.
