I am watching the show and one of the story lines is regarding organ trafficking. One of the cops on the show has a dying aunt. He left the force because he was implicated in stealing $200,000 from the evidence locker. It turns out his uncle stole the money to buy a kidney from China for his wife. The logic was that she would die waiting to get a kidney because the wait is so long in Hawaii. In the episode she is on her death bed because her kidneys shut down. I was wondering if the writers of this show had ever heard of dialysis?

Along these lines I watched SGU (Stargate: Universe) the other day and they did a kidney transplant (!) now they talked about dialysis, even mentioned antigens, matching blood types etc - I was pretty impressed that it was fairly clued in, until they actually did the transplant from one guy to this other (on an alien ship mind you, with just a medic to do the work - but that's a whole other story). Anyway it was all going along OK until they showed the donor lying on his back, with tape and dressings over his CHEST as in where they supposedly took the donor kidney from!! Uh, oops!!! :rofl;
(oh yeah, they had some miracle alien tech stem-cell solution for anti-rejection - so at least they did sort of cover that issue. Don't we all wish it was that easy?!).

Huh, we missed that episode of SGU. Will have to go to Hulu and find it.

I was wondering if the writers of this show had ever heard of dialysis?
I saw that tonight and had the same thought! :o

Some of these are crazy like that but, it's just tv lol. I had heard that some of the medical shows that are more true to life actually have medical professionals they work with for the writing of the show.

I saw that same show too Marc. But, thinking back, it has been a couple of years since the deal her husband made happened. Maybe she is in kidney rejection instead??

I talked to a SGU person, who asked to remain nameless about their "chimera treatment" to prevent rejection -- she actually said "why don't you look into that gene therapy . . . "
The show is shot in Vancouver, and i am fortunate to know a few of the people working on the show. There was actually someone sent in to get research to retain "feasibility" but it is Hollywood, if Hollywood North. They were going to have the Ship do the surgery robatically but went with the human interest of having a super-medic.
I have also seen a "six pack" of kidneys at a big box retail outlet on one of Seth MacFarlane's shows, the Desperate House wife sotry line. Kidney disease seems to be the illness of choice in media.

Like I said I thought the SGU treatment of the kidney failure/transplant issue has been pretty good (much better than some other shows) - the only really glaring "mistake" for mine was the donor being taped up all over his chest area, which I found pretty hilarious, but to their credit in episodes since they've covered infection to the donor and that he shouldn't be trying to run a marathon etc right after big surgery. Yes, a minor aspect to the point of the show, but I like that they didn't just deal with it in one episode then forget it ever happened.
A pity the show got cancelled, because it was just coming into its own, IMHO.
Only one other show I've seen in recent years actually blew me away prop wise. That would be Torchwood (UK show for those that don't know of it). In one episode, in the 2nd season I think our heros go visit this old billionaire recluse type guy living in this mansion, close to death etc, well while it's not explicitly stated during the show(that I can recall) in the scenes when they are in his hospital/bed room there's a freakin Fresarius 4008K machine hooked up to him, complete with appropriate settings for dialysis on the screen(yes, I hit pause and read!! :rofl;). Such a small thing, but for me it was amazing work by the prop dept!!! Most people would have just go "oh life support machine with lights" but it was no shit a real(or as real as I could tell) actual dialysis machine. that was kind of awesome for me to see at the time.
Of course I don't watch any of those medical shows where this stuff is probably on every other episode - with the exception of Nurse Jackie - I bet they'd handle kidney failure in an interesting way:)
