Title: Craving....
Post by: Brightsky69 on April 07, 2011, 06:24:57 AM
Ya know how we would crave ice chips while on dialysis. I was very big into ice chips while I was on dialysis.
I've noticed that after transplant I have developed a craving for gummie candy.
 I like the gummy lifesavers, Welch's Fruit Snacks and plain old gummy bears. I never really craved them before.
Do you have any strange cravings since transplant?

Oddly, I haven't chewed a single ice cube since I got home.

I went through a blueberry craving that was unstoppable for a while.  I'm down to a pint a week, but that might have something to do with the quality of the off-season ones.  I might start again when the good local ones are in season.

Now it's just chocolate I can't live without - but that was true before, so that's no change.  I used to like sweeter stuff, like fudge - chocolate plus even more sugar.  Even just chocolate in a candy coating like M&M's, but no more.  Now the straight sugar candy just makes me gag and candy coated chocolate doesn't taste very good anymore.

Food!  After the transplant everything tasted better.  My husband and I both gained weight.  The thing I crave the most is chocolate and hummus.  I could eat a whole tub with veggies.  I thought I was doing really well eating that instead of other junk until my friend pointed out how much fat was in it.

Never would have thought of it till you mentioned it. However there isnever room for jello, not my type of thing to eat.

I can't think of any cravings I have, I always craved chocolate because I was told I couldn't have it as a kid when I was diagnosed with diabetes. Now that I had the pancreas partt of my transplant, it's all about trying different chocolate from around the world why I can.

Still waiting on my Chocodile Twinkies in the mail :stressed;

Pistachios...  I have been home for 4 days and I have eaten a 1/2 pound of dry roasted/salted pistachios.  Magnesium, Phosphorus and Potassium, oh my!  My labs yesterday said I need to eat more Magnesium, everything else was good range.  I was also told to eat ice cream and chocolate...???????  THAT is a huge change.  I need to take it easy, I DO NOT want to gain weight or get diabetes.  I need to lose 50 pounds as it is.  So, it seems that just like pre-transplant, post-transplant life will revolve around food and fluids... Ugh.

Trix, if you can manage not to gain while you are doing the first few months of transplant meds, you'll be doing far better than most of us!

Chris, I wish I had your problem.  Before the whole kidney thing I was one of those people who could never gain weight.  Though that is frustrating, it's worse not to be able to lose weight.

Plus, now I want a banana split too.  We have an oberweiss ice cream parlor around the corner from my house.  YUM!

I really want some strawberries tonight don't think they're in season anywhere at the moment. Pity could go for strawberries dipped in champagne...
my idea of heaven (You'd never want a banana again trust me)

 >:D Have bottle of champagne in fridge if anyone can find some really good strawberries...

Losing weight is not good for me, makes me feel worse and complicates everything when I do. As for Oberweiss, that is who I was referrring to. Mine is across the street from my house. Good to live in a Cul de Sac, just walk out of house, cross the street and I'm there. However I do have multiple fast foods I could walk to also, but Sliders, Mc Donalds, Arby's, KFC just don't interest me most of the time.

Why does this talk of supermarkets/bananas/sex remind me of the often quoted suggestion made around these parts that if you're a single guy and you want to pick up if you go to a supermarket and stick a banana upright at the front of your trolley or basket that is a sure sign to single ladies that you're available and ready to go?!?! (I kid you not!)

here!! http://blogs.watoday.com.au/peptalk/2008/07/is_that_a_banan.html

lol.

Anyway back to the weight gain I was talking to the neph today at clinic and he told me off for eating too much chocolate  :rofl; Anyway he commented that post-tx while it's common to put on weight, what with the steroids and all as we all know, that because a lot of post-tx patients don't monitor or care about their weight so much (as opposed to constant weight monitoring while on D) that it was often easy to put on 10kg before you know ti, and then very hard to take that off again.

He told me "When you get a craving for junk, have an apple"

thanks sherlock, I would have never figured that one out!!  :rofl;

(of course if he'd told me to go get a banana I may have looked at him askance....)

They say that when your body craves certain foods its because you lack particular vitamins and minerals, ie, bananas (again!) you would be lacking in potassium. So omelets eggs (Vitamin A and B2) , shrimp(Selenium and Copper) and almonds (Magnesium and Potassium) so actually not that crazy!!! Your body is telling you what it needs, neat!  ;D

Shitaki mushrooms sauteed in the wine would have been good with the strohganhoff as a side or top garnish. Never had stroganhoff made with wine though, sounds good.

I had Instant Lunch cup of soup (ramen like noodles with sparce amount of dried veggies with chicken broth that you add water). It was on sale and I should have gotten more. YLGuy had a case of them, good stuff!
