Title: ???? Regarding Disability App's
Post by: lmunchkin on March 29, 2011, 10:07:39 AM
I understand that it takes 5 or more months before Disability payments are issued, but are they made retroactive to the date you filed? ???

Yes.  It looked like such a nice big check when it arrived, too.  I had to fight for mine, since I was pre-D, but still too sick to work, so it took a long time to get through the appeals process.  By the time I paid all the bills and paid back all the money I had borrowed from my family, I had $36 dollars left in my checking account.....and so it goes.

Does it still take months on end if you apply for disability after you have been on dialysis for over a year?
My social worker told me it shouldnt take a long time.  But i prefer to listen to the people here who have been through it.

I can see wherre being pre D may take a bit longer then someone who is an established dialysis patient.

It is my understanding that you will not receive 1st check 5mths or more. Plus I found out that there will not be back pay to Jan when we filed for it. Our 1st check will be in August. That down right "Stinks"'!  Looks like Im gonna have to bite the bullet and borrow some money until then. Hubby is very upset about this, but I like I told him, he should not worry himself over it. Truth of the matter is Iam very upset about it, but I just don't let it show. We are so blessed when I look at others who are having to deal with all this ALONE!  It's unconscienable the way they treat people. :waiting;   :bow;  :stressed;     Idiots

I tried to get permission to work at home while I was on dialysis.Reasonable accommodation it's called. HA HA HA  :rofl; It took so freakin long that I got the call for my transplant before they even LOOKED at my paperwork.
I got a transplant before I could even get them to consider me for reasonable accommodations. What a joke!!

lmunchkin - I am extreamly blessed to ave gotten my transplant. When I first got on the list they told me it would be a 5 to 7 year wait. I got the transplant after 2 years. I felt like I had won the lotto.  ;D but better.
My creatinine runs between 1.9 to 2.1 not as low as I would like but my doc's think that is just my normal range with this kidney. They don't get worried about it so neither do I.  I feel good and I am finally headed back to school now that I have some energy back.  :)

My husband was lucky he was on short term disability through Prudential (his STD/LTD disability insurance through his employer) and was advised by them to apply for Social Security the first month he was out, so he had no waiting at all when his STD disability was expired (6 months), he was already getting his Social Security Disability, his LTD disability kicked in after the 6 months and he is still getting his LTD and SSD every month.  I don't know what we would have done if we had to wait months for checks like some of the other people had to.  We would have probably lost our house.  Last thing a sick person needs is more stress.
