I was diagnosed with FSGS about 5 years ago. My nephrologist estimated 3-4 years before I would need dialysis. Well, it's been 5 years and the time has come. I get my training in home PD starting this coming week (March 14, 2011) and should start home automated PD on Friday.
As my job required extensive travel I had to give it up, even though I really liked it. I'm old enough to retire even without the kidney disease but that just pushed up the date a bit.

Welcome, blackandgoldfan!! You will find lots of helpful information and really great people on this website.
Are you by any chance from Pittsburgh??
-
You guessed it. I live in NJ now but spent my first 22 years in the 'burg.

Very cool!!! Are you a Penguin fan??
-
Of course, Penguins, Pirates, Steelers. Black and Gold covers them all!
-
Me,too!! Not real thrilled with the Pirates, though. My husband and I are hard core hockey fans. Love the Steelers,. too!! Can't wait for March Madness, hopefully Pitt will do well this year.
-
So, that means you're starting dialysis training tomorrow! Man, you seem so sanguine about it! I wish I could be like that. I hope it all goes well; come back and tell us how Friday goes. We wish you all the best and hope PD will leave you feeling really good.
-
Good luck with your training and start to PD. I'm a PD patient and had an easy start and it all works well.

I do home PD as well, switching for the Baxter machine to the Fresenius machine and my retraining is this week, too. I'll think of you!
I think you'll adjust quickly. Welcome!

G'day and :welcomesign;.
-
welcome :welcomesign; and all the best for ease of training :-) Will be great to hear of your success :2thumbsup;

Thanks for all the encouragement. Day 1 of training was LONG. Got as far as setting up the machine just short of attaching myself. That drill will be tomorrow. Also met with the dietitian but couldn't get real detailed as my bloodwork was just taken today. So far, so good. I think part of the reason I'm so calm about it is that I've known it's been coming for almost 5 years now. That's enough time to wrap my brain around the concept!

I agree with the calmness b&gfan. After all the years of panic and worry, for me it was like a weight lifting: here it is, the BIG D and amazingly, it is not as bad as I thought. And how quickly it will all became 'routine'. Hope things go well for you.

Welcome Black and Gold fan. I was born in Washington, PA, and lived in Pgh. for a long time. Use to have Steeler's season tix. Moved to CA in '72 and have been here ever since, but have retained my maniacal loyalty to the Rooneys and the Steelers. Not much of a hockey or baseball fan.
-
I grew up in Edgewood. It's a small suburb out the parkway east, next to Squirrel Hill. Have now lived in NJ longer than Pittsburgh but just like you the Steelers seem to stay in your blood no matter where you move.
