Who here does nocturnal home hemo? Which machine do you use? I somehow got the impression that there are not any machines specifically approved by the FDA for home nocturnal use. I asked the FDA's medical devices department about when we might expect NxStage to be approved for nocturnal use, and someone emailed me back and told me that the FDA didn't care at what time of day you dialyzed. :rofl;
Anyway, like I said, I got the impression that while the FDA hasn't approved any specific machine for this specific use, some nephs are still willing to write you a script for home nocturnal, which is great if you are lucky to have a neph that doesn't think you're a moron and believes this would be a good therapy for you. So I was wondering which machines are being used by IHD members who are doing nocturnal home hemo.

I will be using the Fresenius 2008K2 for home hemo dialysis. I am currently in training for it which I started last week. It will take approx. 4-6 weeks for the training. They offered me a choice between the NxStage System One and this unit, and I chose this one for various reasons.
I don't see what the FDA has to do with your decision. This is between the dialysis unit that will be training you and yourself. Also your nephrologist may change when you switch units or you might stay with your current nephrologist. It's up to you and is again a decision to be made between you and your new unit. I am assuming the unit you are currently at does not offer home hemo training though this may not be the case, but it was for me.

Thanks for that, Calypso, but I am asking specifically about nocturnal home hemo. My clinic offers training with NxStage, but it does not train for nocturnal. It will train me for extended, and the FDA is ok with that, but as for nocturnal, well, that's where you start getting some resistance.
Are you going to be doing nocturnal with NxStage?

nxstage is not available in Canada. Hubby uses a 2008K @ home machine for nocturnal.

i will be starting Nxstage Extended in two weeks.... I have my heparin pump and I am going in for training ( for the pump ) and then I will be doing Nxstage home dialysis for appox 7.5 hours a day...five or six days a week..... there is no restrcitions as to what time of the day I choose to do my dialysis.... More than likely I will run while I sleep..... makes cents to me... Kill two birds with on stone.......
There are several people who run extended and thieir run hours may be at night....
It hard to convience some clinics that a anyone can do extended if they have been trained to do Nxstage.... its just the hours are longer..... instead of doing 3 hours they are going to do 7 or 8 hours..... no big deal..... but some people / clinics just dont get it ..... LOL they feel out of control.... its really pretty easy concept.... I have been woriking with my clinic for a year now.... it has taking a long time to convience them.... but its paid off.....
I hope when you get started with Dialysis... I hope that you will have a chance to starting motivating your clinic to get you trained and then let you decide how much time you feel that you need for quality dialysis......

I will be doing nocturnal with the Fresenuis 2008K2. Sorry I forgot to specify nocturnal in my post because I assumed due to your post that we were talking about nocturnal and not daytime home hemo.
