Title: transplant meds and sexuality?
Post by: Des on February 25, 2011, 03:10:56 AM
Does these meds affect your sexlife?

I would say that the effects are positive in the sense that one feels healthier (as long as all is well with the trx) and therefore more energetic for sex.  Of course everyone's experience is different because I still had a very healthy sex drive even while on D.  I don't know what the listed side effects say because I never read them unless I start to have a problem.  So far, painful hands are the only things that bother me, but they don't interfere with sex since I've given up acrobatics (just kidding).

Dare I admit this here but I haven't had once since my tx to know BUT I do agree you feel much better and well I am quite curious to know. I certainly feel raring to go (as it were!!  :rofl;). The subject did come up in a way when I was talking to the tx co-ordinator a month or so ago, and she told me that you become more fertile, so using contraception is important(unless your goal is to get pregnant(or get someone pregnant)).

I don't know that any of the common tx meds specifically affect sexual performance or desire... from my point of view the desire is certainly there!!!  :rofl; :yahoo;

I had no sex drive while on D. Since my transplant, Jan 3rd, that has changed!!
Hubby is happy!!
I'm assuming the meds affect everyone differently, but for me, it was a positive change.

I've been permanently "hot under the collar" lately must be the medication.
If anyone finds out which med it is let me know, it's driving me crazy!  :P

 ;)

Are you on cyclosporine? Apparently that can cause an increase in sex drive ..
Title: Re: transplant meds and sexuality?
Post by: RichardMEL on March 06, 2011, 01:12:22 AM
What about the prednisolone?

Yeah I'm on the cyclosporin, but my dose is now down to 75mg twice daily (started @ 225x2) and if anything mine's increased even more...lol
Title: Re: transplant meds and sexuality?
Post by: Sugarlump on March 06, 2011, 02:37:55 AM
No tacrolimus, prednisolone and myfortic.
Since doc lowered the pred, my sexual desires have been off the scale! How weird is that?
No man will be safe from me soon  :rofl;
Title: Re: transplant meds and sexuality?
Post by: rsudock on March 06, 2011, 11:47:31 AM
yes i was and still take cyclosporine! even though I am on D I still have the transplant kidney and the cyclosporine stops it from making antibodies which would give me a high PRA and we don't want that!
Title: Re: transplant meds and sexuality?
Post by: Sugarlump on March 06, 2011, 12:03:12 PM
That's an interesting comment about your cyclsporin that you still take it for your non-working kidney.
When my first transplant failed they took me off all meds except a minor dose of prednisolone (3mg daily) and
when I subsequently went in for transplant number two I had very high levels of antibodies from the first
kidney...so if they had kept me on the cyclosporin, we could have prevented my current problems.... so why the hell
didn't they at least give me the choice?
So do you still take prednisolone as well? I swear that is the culprit, besides the high sex drive problem I feel like I'm getting
a personality change and becoming more reckless and less controlled by inhibitions. It's a strange thing :o
Title: Re: transplant meds and sexuality?
Post by: rsudock on March 06, 2011, 12:11:10 PM
yes I am still on prednisone 5mg as well. in all fairness i think it was the norm for docs to have patients stop taking their transplant drugs, but now they realize that is the culprit of high PRA. My brother who's kidney rejected 7 years earliers was also taken off all his transplant drugs and he has a high PRA now too. We both have the same neph and it just wasn't something that was done I guess back then....ask your doc if he has read any current research about that now?

I am not sure about the sex drive b/c even though I am on all these transplant drugs now still, with D and blood pressure meds I am NOT about sexy time any longer. I could care less really...I wonder if going to endocronologist would be the answer? I went to the OB/GYN last week and he says physically everything checked out fine....hhhmmm?

Post by: Sugarlump on March 06, 2011, 12:29:00 PM
At my next clinic appointment, I'm definitely going to ask the doc to do a blood test for hormone levels to see if anything is out of range and then maybe they can work out why.
And I shall now ask him why they didn't consider leaving me on the cyclosporin and whether they would consider it in the future. I think you're probably right about the advances in transplant medicine, even in the last couple of years treatment options seem to be advancing very rapidly.

I'm going to add PARANOIA to my list of symptoms from Prednisolone...
Title: Re: transplant meds and sexuality?
Post by: Sunny on March 07, 2011, 02:05:40 AM
It's the prednsone, absolutely, regarding the sex drive.
I'm on 5 milligrams a day now since my transplant 5 months ago and I notice. Also, I was on prednisone 10 years ago for 6 months to treat Goodpastures Disease and increase sex drive is something I noticed then too. As far as I'm concerned, that's the only redeeming quality of prednisone, all the other side effects have been really awful.

That is so NOT a conversation i want to have with my doc ...but, if anything its getting worse (and please bear in mind here I'm single and not in any relationship  :) ) and it worries me what it will drive me to do !!!! so I guess somehow I will have to broach the subject with him. And find out if there is any cure ??? or alternative to Prednisolone.

No improvement on high sex drive and general reckless behaviour ...clinic on Thursday ...perhaps it will be simple to resolve and I can calm down!

Actually I'll have to stop blaming the pred as they reckon I've got overactive thyroid gland now to add to my tale of woes and that might be the culprit x  Too much adrenalin coursing round my body ...

Started propanol today to try and control elevated blood pressure and raised thyroid levels and maybe calm me down a little.
In reality all it seems to have done is give me the shakes...
How do you like your sex ...shaken and not stirred ???    :o

Somebody should start a speed-dating service for organ transplant patients.

If we could only get the single female organ transplant patients together with the single male organ transplant recipients.

(That last phrase should be parsed as "single male organ transplant recipients," not as "single male organ transplant recipients.")
