Title: I did the shopping!
Post by: texasstyle on February 20, 2011, 05:52:52 AM
I can't control it but my husband often stops at the stores and buys groceries and bring them home. I can never bleieve what he brings. Chocolate, cheese, everything bad. Anyway I went shopping unanncounced and found out just how easy it is to pick out good renal renal foods. And yes, there are a lot of them. First in produce I picked up a honeydew melon. I kept wondering if "anything melon" was good but quickly remembered it was "berry" lol. I got strawberries, blackberries, and blueberries. For deserts I got angel food cake.Ginger ale as a soda and Crystal light. The bread I choose was white. I did NOT buy anything chocolate! Whole chicken breast to cook for some flavor and then slice for lunch meat. It doesn't take much to make these choices. When you are shopping justtake a few minutes and really look around. I saw items in there I never noticed before. Most importantly I feel good about what I bought and will not worrying that he eats them.

You can also buy very low sodium tuna and many canned veggies with no added salt. Once you get used to looking for the right foods, it isn't hard at all. Congratulations.  :yahoo;

We buy meats and veggies that we have to cook ourselves and of course fruit.  Hubby eats white bread but I buy whole wheat for me. Not much canned or processed food.  We do buy tomato soup for cooking.  It is much easier now with nocturnal but we still stay away from things that we don't have to cook ourselves!!  Provide the meals for him texas.  At least you have provided them and it will make you feel good.  Whether or not he eats them you have no control over!!   :grouphug;

About the tomato soup, I recently read in a renal cook book that you can on occassion use a little tomato paste which will dilute some with the cooking process in your dish to add flavor.Canned vege's? We do buy some but raw is best right? It's still a little confusing. Take apricots I think it is. You can't have them fresh but canned is ok. Why is that? Because they are watered down in the can water?

It's funny TS how we just 'go with the flow' sometimes and then *bing* you get an 'out' and see the light in a different way.  My daughter sort of goes through the same food situaton as you.  Hubby brings home....hum, groceries of chips, cookies, sweet rolls etc, and cant seem to find the vegies, meats etc.   Soooo, off to work he goes, and she forgets that she too can go get GROCERIES..lol  We just had this talk this morn.  Im glad you got the fun experience of 'seeing' the other foods available..lol  If for nothing else,for  yourself to keep you healthy and strong :-)    Hugs, and wellbeing  :flower;

 :2thumbsup;

I do the shopping in this house (otherwise it wouldn't get done at all, for bad or good foodstuffs.)

Tomato soup?  Blokey would love a tin of Heinz tomato soup (it's his favourite food ever) but hasn't had any in MONTHS because he's just so damn good with his fluid allowance.  Or, he's not so good with his fluid allowance so he never has any spare to use to satisfy his desire?

 ;D

(I hope that your hubby appreciates all the yummy food you're bought him, tx!)

Poppy , hubby couldn't eat much tomato soup before nocturnal because of the potassium.  I use it mostly for cooking but hubby likes a bowl of it every now and then too!!

I'm always scared of the potassium in the tomatoes but the K in some potatoes is what put my husband into paralysis once. SOAK those taters!

TS...GOOD for you!  I do the shopping here (like Poppy, it wouldn't get done if I didn't) but hubby will go to the local convenience store and buy things he shouldn't have.  Like today...Dr. Pepper and a large apple fritter.  Or ice cream, nuts, tortilla chips and salsa, wonder where it will end?  I don't buy much at the store that he can't have and what I do buy for me, I keep out of sight.  I'm a fairly healthy eater in any case and don't eat much junk food.  (My downfall is that I am a choc-a-holic.  I love chocolate!)

Most canned veggies have sodium added so you should rinse them in warm water.  Never cook them in the water that comes in the can.  Or buy low sodium or frozen veggies.

No he wasn't mad. He hurt his back so has only been to dialysis the past week. Being house bound he has no say in the matter! lol  He likes the things I bought. Sometimes he gets them himself especially the straw & blueberries. Blackberries were a treat. All produce is so expensive but the blackberries were almost $4.00 for medium container. Rip off! My mouth drops when I put 5 items in the cart and already $30.00. Our president says that the economy is doing much better. I don't think he's ever been grocery shopping lol
