I'm seriously thinking about doing home hemo, so sick of the centers, I might be taking classes soon. My mom is a little weary though. Any one else have a problem with someone in their family not wanting them to do home? How did you over come it?

Hello. My husband does dialysis at a center for almost 4 years now. He's brought wanting to do it at home. In our situation I said just no way. You see, he is often non-compliant and we have so many issues from that. If home, he'd find ways to get around doing dialysis properly. On the other hand I see alot of people from here who are happy with doing it at home. I understand the trainng takes a couple/few weeks but they're the ones who know for sure. Is your mom well educated about kidney disease and the dialysis procedure. The more she knows the better she will feel about things. EDUCATION IS POWER. That little saying is so true. I'm thinking she is weary because doesn't know much about it. I'm sure she'll through go through classes with you. I believe you need a caregiver to help you. Does SHE want to do this? I don't mean is she accepting that YOU do, but kidney disease/dialysis effects the whole family. My concern mainly for doing it at home was the fact that at a center you have a nurse see you everyday and they monitor you all the time. Take temps., blood pressure to say the least. At my home to have a temp. of 102 is no big deal. He has the "it'll go away on it's own, nothing's wrong me. I feel SECURE that they check him at dialysis.About over coming I suggest your mom educate along with you. Change itself sometimes is scary.

Hi there. I did home dialysis 9 years ago, granted it was PD but this 2nd time around I didn't want to do it at home again. I had to be in charge of everything, supplies, setting up the machine, checking my vitals, etc. It can be empowering but for me it was just a pain in the rear. Plus I had no life, I couldn't hang out with my friends after school or anything (was in high school at the time) because I had to connect in the afternoon for a little bit and I couldn't go out at night or sleep over at any of my friend's houses because I had to be hooked up all night, though I don't think home hemodialysis has the same grueling schedule. And what if something had gone wrong? The nearest hospital with a dialysis unit is 45 minutes away. I like the freedom I have now and the comfort of knowing that if something goes wrong there are registered nurses working in my clinic. Plus the only work I have to do is unpack my blankets and sit down in a chair. Not trying to discourage you, just saying it's more convenient for me and this is why. Perhaps discussing with them the reason(s) why they're so reluctant and offer them more information on the subject to help ease their minds about it. Also, tell them your feelings on it and why it is so important to you that may help too. Good luck!

You can always take the class and try it at home and if it doesn't work out you can always go back in center. I don't think there is a contract saying you have to do home if you take the class. Just try it.
