Title: Depression and Psychiatrists and meds
Post by: WishIKnew on February 17, 2011, 04:08:43 PM
My depression has finally scared me to the point of action - I called a psychiatrist today for an appointment.  :urcrazy; I go next Tuesday.  I'm both worried that it's too far away and relieved that I made the appointment.  I'm afraid he's going to hospitalize me.  I don't want meds for depression, but know that's where I'm headed.  Anyway, I need help and I hope he can help me! :pray;

Hang in there until your appt. Many of us have experienced depression and do take medicine. The meds are very helpful to me. I hope you can get help.

It's very positive that you are taking some action to get some help. This is the most important step in my view.

I don't like taking meds either. I've suffered from chronic depression my entire life and never did much about it until I hit my 40's when my dr. suggested meds. It totally changed my life for the better in that it dramatically lessened all the depression symptoms. Taking a pill vs. Depression???  I suggest give the meds a try. There are many kinds and one may be able to help you.

Unless you are a danger to yourself and/or to others, you cannot be hospitalized without your consent or your family's consent.  Not in this country, anyway.  Just feeling "down" won't do it.

Most folks who suffer from chronic depression take meds on an outpatient basis, rather than being hospitalized.

Just remember to explain to your psychiatrist about dialysis and the other meds you're on.  He may tell you to take your meds after dialysis, so they won't get dialyzed out.
