Title: What did you want to be when you grew up?
Post by: rsudock on February 09, 2011, 05:57:58 PM
When I was a little kid I use to dance around my room and sing all the time to Madonna! I was for certain that I would be a movie star or singer...what did you dream about becoming as an adult?

When i was a kid, I wanted to be a Railroad Engineer. By the time I got out of school I had found out that I was Color blind so that put an end to a railroar career. I have always liked to build things and fix thing so that eventually led to a job in industrial maintenance. I finished my career as a Master main tenace Tech. Over the years I have built machines you could hold in your had to some that weighed several hundred tons. Now that I am retired/disabled my son owns a shop where he repairs steam tractors, I help him every day and love it. It also keeps me active and I can use 50 yrs of skill to make his work easier. :bandance;(http://)

at this point in my life i just laugh. when i was younger i wanted to be an airline stewardess. i however was neither tall enough or skinny enough. back then if you weighed even 1 pound over what they said you should weigh, you couldn't fly. and you couldn't be married.  guess i was a kid in the dark ages. i'd still like to travel though and if i got paid to do it, so much the better.  i did come close though. when my kids were little we had flight benefits. if i hadn't had 4 kids, my feet would have only touched ground to change planes.

I wanted to be a nurse when I was younger.  Instead I spent 25 years in the insurance claims industry, ending my career as Claims Manager.  Now, retired, I seem to be pursuing an unpaid career in nursing....  :rofl;

When I was a Sr. in high school I had plans to become a world famous fashion photographer in NYC. IGA  put an end to that. I managed to take a couple of photography classes at the local community college. Then I got a job working for the Govt.
Over the years I have done some freelance work. Now since the transplant Iam starting to get back into photography. I am helping to shoot a small wedding this weekend.  ;D It's nice to be able to do what I was meant to do.    ;D ;D ;D ;D

I can remember my aunt asking what I wanted to be when I grew up.

"Minister" I said.

"Oh you want to be in the church?"

"No. Prime minister"

I was in drugged state- morphine- in the hospital when I informed my family that when I grow up I want to be a pirate.  I will have my own ship. It will be named the "Who Gives  Rat's Ass". The flag will have a skull with a rat sitting on top of it with its tail going through the eye sockets.

Needless to say I cracked everyone up.

I wanted to be Wonder Woman.  I spent many hours practicing for the role in the front garden.  The following year I wanted to be Daisy from the Dukes of Hazzard. When it became apparent that I was neither skinny nor pretty enough, I decided I'd like to work with children instead. A part of me wishes I'd tried a tad harder to follow my innocent dreams.

I wanted to study archaeology and “search for & dig out” remains of other cultures, and study them.

I particularly wanted to study more about the Pharaoh’s, the Aztecs and Inca civilization –

and/or to find out whether Atlantis really existed or not.

That is what I would have liked to have done & unfortunately things didn’t plan out as I had wished.

One of the great stumbling blocks was my fragile health.

In elementary school, a pastry chef - which I did do for a while, at least a basic level as part of the family restaurant business.
In high school, I wanted to be a pilot in the military - but they don't take diabetics, or make pilots out of people with crummy vision either, to be practical.  I think now that a military career looked the most intriguing because it wasn't option.
First year of college, an elementary school teacher.  That lasted until I volunteered for the Uni's free weekend child care center.  30.hyper.kids.every.day.NOT!
After that, a technical writer.  That lasted until I realized I was too burned out after my Bach degree to go on to get the Master's I needed to get hired.

Now, close to two decades after college, I'm in school again to become a paralegal.  Hope there's no time limit on growing up......

Haaaaaa that's so easy, Rock Star! I never got that far but still keep up playing/writing my music. I made a sign when I was 16 and hung it outside my bedroom door. Instead of it saying "do not disturb", it said "Recording Session in progress. Do not enter.". I would try to come up with poses for how I would look on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine lol. Goofy when I was young. I have to admit it lol

When I was little, I wanted to be a teacher or write books.  After I got sick, I wanted to be a dialysis nurse, but that dream died in grade 11 when I failed biology because I couldn't see through the microscopes.  I remember telling my dad about ideas I had for magazines made up entirely of amateur writer submissions, and he told me it was a stupid idea.  In the last few years, I've started writing again.  I've been working on a novel for a little over a year now, and I'm writing short stories to enter in different contests.  The last one I submitted was to the Writer's Union of Canada.  I'm working on 2 right now, one for the Kidney Foundation, that's due the end of this month, and another for the Writer's Union, which is due in April.

I wanted to be a marine biologist, and we live 800km from the coast, so go figure. Then it was work in science, as in a lab tech or even a forensic scientist. Fell in love and went bush instead! And am happy with my choices.
I think I missed my calling as a teacher - maybe one day I'll live in town so I can volunteer at a school. Love working with kids.
And me, too, Riki. I dream of writing but you are way ahead of me. The only writing I do is letter writing to family and friends. Sadly this is becoming a lost art.

When I was growing up I wanted to be a writer or an artist. But everyone told me I was going to be a teacher. Ha, there was NO WAY that I was going to be a teacher.

I majored in fine arts in college and discovered that even though I am a fairly good technically in art, I don't have the creative spark to be a real artist. On the other hand, I am a VERY good teacher and in addition to my 35 year career in teaching, I am a teacher-trainer. I am a very good technical writer and have thousands of pages of training manuals under my belt, as well as four graduate level courses in teacher education.

Looking back, I feel VERY fortunate to have found my calling.

When I retire I do plan on taking up more art. And I'm working on a book for my grandchildren of stories from when I was a little girl.

Ive had many thoughts on what I want to be, nurse, doctor, rock star, super hero, artist, singer (ha probably a good thing im not since i share a name with a famous singer),
In highschool I wanted to work with prosthetics, wigs, artificial limbs, i still want to do that and
when I started college, i was going for Art Therapy, I wanted to work with children through art, helping them expess...

My true dream though, complicated, non profit, for children, I want to take allllll the religions that there are, bring them together, and teach children, in an unbiased way, about all of them. So that they can make an informed decision about religion, have hope, have spirit, have a higher power to turn to. Also, want to help children with sickness, mental and physical...

I always wanted to be a racehorse trainer ... the closest I've ever got to that is putting a bet on the horses.
When I was 18 I decided to go backpacking and greyhounding round America then the dreaded Taxman offered me a job and I never went...
Why oh why did I just not take off ...I could have ended up anywhere other than here  :)

Hey sugarlump my sister-in-law's hubby is a racehorse trainer and everywhere we go, someone seems to know him. He wheels and deals a lot but also works very hard. (I love horses but would be no good with those early morning starts!)

Hey thats interesting though I don't know much about Australian racing, other than the Melbourne Cup!
I thnk even I would find the early starts hard now used to be able to get up at 5am no problem, now my late nights and the odd glass of wine have put paid to that! I still have a keen interest in racing, watching, betting, collecting prints...

We had a couple of fantastic holidays with the race horse training family and went to small country race meetings. We'd be away 3-4 weeks and camp out at the tracks. I even managed some early morning starts to clean out stalls, etc. At times, the races were only able to be run because we were there with our string of horses to bump the numbers up. The small meetings in the outback are lots of fun. I had no luck with the punting though - even with inside information on the horses form.

I used to love putting the horses to bed rugged up, knee deep in straw and munching on their haynets, content!
A physical but pleasurable job.
Sometimes I get lucky betting, it's Cheltenham Festival tomorrow Big betting week.
Horse tomorrow called BORROWED WINGS sounds like my Sidney the kidney. Have to have some on that!!!
