:banghead;
Just a little vent:
At work I was asked (asked...not something i normally do) to develop a conference registration web page using Microsoft SharePoint. SharePoint is used to build webpages.
Anyway...I have very little expierence using SharePoint.....I've had 4 days of SharePoint classes tops!!! I am NOT a programmer or a web developer.
So I figured out and build this webpage to the best of my ability. It did what it was basically supposed to do...nothing fancy. I consulted with the higher up's and they NEVER gave any advice.
Now they are bitching about how this isn't right and that isn't right. WTF!!!!!! What did you expect??!?!? The SH*T works so be happy.

Hahahahahaha, I can tell you're not a software developer. Welcome to our world!
It's never what "we had in mind."
There's a great parody poem out there about the night before deployment. I'll never forget the final stanza...
The system was finished, the tests were concluded.
The client's last changes were even included!
And the client exclaimed with a snarl and a taunt,
"It's just what I asked for... but not what I want!"

rocker - I don't know how you guys deal with it. My BF is a programmer. He is forever telling me "Don't let it get to you...it happens to me all the time."
My thing is you guys get paid to program.....I do not. They are getting my "programming" for FREE. I am not getting paid the 70 to 100,000 programmers and developers can make.
People shouldn't b*tch about something they are getting for FREE. :rant; Thanks for letting me get this off my chest.

Yup, it's free and they're pissed! Sounds perfectly normal to me.
When I was married, my husband used to do basic website design on the side. He was charging $25 an hour for services the professionals wanted at least $200 per hour for. I'd do the graphic designs, and he'd do the programming. Most of them wanted it up and running ASAP and for less than $200 total. So we'd crank one out in a weekend. It would look cute, be functional, and do all the basics it needed to do. Pics, phone and email contacts, links to google maps, etc.
There was always that one dingbat customer who'd bitch because it didn't have enough bells and whistle and flashing lights and the ability to take online orders and stay secure and and and and.... Never mind that we had given them links to other sites that we had done, and explained that we did basic advertising sites to give them an initial web presence (the find us, print the coupon, come see us kind of websites), AND that we didn't have the money for the software to do secure online ordering. If they wanted that, they needed the pros - and that was going to be thousands of dollars and weeks away, plus would require regular maintenance.

I tell ya....right now I am ready to bight someone's head off. And I am a nice person. ;D I was even joked by a co-worker for being too nice and helpful to customers.
-
Just remember, you cant please everybody, there will always at least one unhappy customer.
-
I am in the wrong business....I have never been treated like this when I worked as a freelance photographer.
-
oh yeah I can relate to that too. Sorry, situation normal there. Of course it's not what they wanted... just because they TOLD you it's what they wanted....
You did your best - that's what is important. If they really want to bitch and moan then the response is to hire a consultant at mega $$$$$ with the training blah blah to do what they want - and they probably STILL won't be happy.

Oh Yeah!!! My boss has been saying for YEARS that we could hire a programmer to build our web page and then we can manage it. Trouble is the higher up's couldn't get it together enough to actually tell a pro programmer what they really wanted on the web page.
This is what I feel like. :banghead; Plus the actual IT person here who gets paid twice what i do hasn't done crap on the web page except copy and paste stuff. I know she has been bad mouthing me to the boss. She has NO idea about SharePoint.
She told my boss that i screwed somthing up on the web page and that was the one reason he said "Let's let her handel the web page from now on." Sure...let me build the web page and get it all up and running then dismiss me like "Ok...we don't need you anymore."
