No Difference in Survival Rate from both Home-Based and Clinic-Based Dialysis

To get rid of the complications and risk associated with hospital-based dialysis; one can also opt for dialysis at home, as per a recent study appeared in the Clinical Journal of the American Society Nephrology (CJASN).

Many patients are put to dialysis after they face kidney transplant failure and if they prefer clinic-based or hemodialysis, they are more threatened to develop complications or die due to their continuous exposure to strong immunosuppressive medications in comparison to those who receive peritoneal dialysis or home-based dialysis. In the latter case, a patient is more at ease and he/she doesn't require visiting hospital many times a week.

The study was conducted by Jeffrey Perl, MD St. Michael's Hospital, University of Toronto, Canada and his colleagues who assessed the effect of home-based dialysis on the survival rate of patients with kidney failure. The researchers analyzed 2,110 adult Canadian patients who were receiving dialysis after the failure of their kidney transplant between January 1991 and December 2005.

The overall survival rate in both hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis was discovered to be the same. Even though, the number of people who died during first two years and after two years were almost similar in two groups - one undergoing home-based dialysis and the other receiving clinic0-based dialysis.

"I hope this research helps guide patients and the health care professionals treating them to make informed decisions regarding dialysis modality decisions", said Dr. Perl.

I'm a bit confused.  When the author talks about "home dialysis", does s/he mean home hemo or PD?  I'm thinking it is solely the latter, but I could be wrong.

I wish these people would get it straight and realize that 'home dialysis' is NOT a synonym for PD. Is home hemo really that fringe?

I Think she means both hemo & PD at home.

But this study is for people who have had a transplant andwere on immosupresant drugs.
Yet the transplant failed and they had to do dialysis.....
