I am coming up on 3 years waiting for a transplant. 1 out of 6 African Americans are transplanted. Was wondering how long it took for you on a waiting list for a cadaver to receive a kidney? Or how long have you been waiting? They tell me in my state it is a 5 to 7 year wait.
-
I'm just starting the evaluation process and I understand it's about a 2-year wait here (Oregon). It's very dependent on where you live. I'm lucky to live where I do. Where are you?
-
in australia the average wait is about 4 years, can blow out to 7 or 8 years
had a lady at d waited 11 years, she is coming up to her 1 year kidneyversarry in the next few months

Just shy of 5 years for me. Hooray!!!!

Deanne.... I live near Portland too.... Most transplants are done thru OHSU... where right now there is a 2.7 year wait for a transplant..... OHSU is not with the Paired Donor exchange program..... Legacy is and their wait for transplant is only 12.1 months..... If you have a donor Non blood type go to legacy.... and sign up for their Paired exchange program.... I am switch from OHSU to legacy right now so that I can get sign up thru the Paired Exchange program....

It'll be 7 years for me in May. The average wait time here is 5 years. I don't know if there's a reason why my wait has been so long, just that my name hasn't come up yet. My mom is about to start her evaluation in order to be a donor in the paired donor exchange program, so as long as there's nothing to stop her from donating, there's another option for me. I did have a friend offer to give me a kidney, but I'm not sure if she's still interested

I live in Illinois the Chicago area. I know of people that have been transplanted quicker. Not sure if it is because of blood type or facility. It seems all inconsistent to me. Why should it be different if you live in different states?
-
I'm on the list 2 yrs. In SE Ohio told the wait is 3-5 yrs. I have very high antibodies so for me it will be like winning the lottery!
-
I wanted about 2 years for my kidney. They told me I'd probably have to wait 4 to 7 years.
-
I waited 2 years for my first Kidney and 4 years for my second. The wait times in Chicago can be long because there are so many centers doing transplants and they all have to share from the same pool. I'm african american with type o blood. Both of my kidney transplants were done at University of Wisconsin at Madison. Have you thought about being double listed? You can even transfer your waiting time. It's much shorter at Madison.
The best bet though is to have a living donor. What center are you listed at in Chicago?

I have a meeting with University of Wisconsin at Madison March 1 for evaluation. They have my records where I am listed at University of Illinois Chicago. I too am O+ positive and I am trying to find a living donor and do what ever I can to get a transplant.

If just for paired exchange, it is fine to go to Legacy. Waiting times at Portland are much more complex than 2.7 years or 12.1 months. For blood types AB or A, it should be less than 2.7 years. For blood B, it is longer than 3 years. Waiting times are shorter for Legacy than OHSU. Since they use the same waiting list, you need to wonder why one has a shorter waiting time? Does Legacy use the kidneys that OHSU would not use? Apparently, the results for OHSU are much better than Legacy, which, to me, is a concern with Legacy.

Good luck at your evaluation meeting! I hope you find a kidney soon. Ask about transferring your waiting time and see what they say.
