Title: 6 weeks of haemo instead of PD after surgery - reassurance?
Post by: chook on January 08, 2011, 06:20:16 PM
I am having a hernia fixed in a fortnight and will have to do haemo for six weeks while I heal. No, the docs won't consider PD low fills. I'm anxious about the haemo for a start. I have a fistula already and will be away from home for the duration but can stay with our daughter so that is a bonus. I'm concerned that the PD that is going SO WELL for me might not be as effective after the 6 week break. At the moment I have no fluid or dietary restrictions.
Has anyone been through similar treatment?

Not quite the same but I did 6 months of hemo in-center before I was allowed to start PD because of some infections I was recovering from. I didn't love it but I survived it. Contrary to some stories here, all the techs were very kind to me and helpful. I didn't always feel great but it was bearable. I think you'll be ok. Just be a little more careful about what you eat and drink since you have a day or two without dialysis in-between treatments. Take a blanket to stay warm and a book to read or whatever. I suspect you'll be able to do this and go back to PD without a big problem. It's good you have family to be with. Hang in there and time will fly by! (Also ask doctor for Zofran if the treatments give you nausea.)

Thanks jeannea for that - am planning to take a book and my iPod. I found out today I am to have a 'pre-run' prior to surgery to make sure the fistula is working, as I have had it for a year now and not used it yet. I have had to have it widened and it is not the most perfect fistula so fingers crossed.
