Help! My husband has just started CAPD (4 weeks ago) and now we get a letter to say that batches of Ultraneal have become contaminated. Can we use 2,27 Physioneal overnight instead until new supplies arrive?
He is terrified of getting peritonitus.

Any update on this???... And where do you live???
We're in Ireland, and my mum uses Extraneal... We've heard nothing, and I'm hoping it doesn't apply here...
KS, good to see you!....

HI Kickstart - regret cannot understand your reply Kay ???

Hello Darth,
I am afraid it does involve you in Ireland. We are in UK East Sussex. Google up Reuters report on Baxter's contaminated fluids.

Yikes!!!!!!....
Thanks KS and Kay.... Will do exactly what you suggest... I'll PM Billybags....
We were only at the PD clinic today, and Mum was seen by the Renal Registrar, the Clinical Nurse Specialist, and the Consultant Neph.... Nobody mentioned any problems...
By the way, Mum, according to the docs, is 'doing swimmingly well' on PD.... All her bloods are in the middle of the normal range!... We're happy with that!...
Thanks for the advice, Folks...
Love to the Fur Babies, KS...

Okay...
Following a bit of searching, I've come up with some information.... This appears to be a Europe wide issue.... Not surprising, really... Baxter in Castlebar in Co Mayo, Ireland appear to make all of the solution for the European market....
Anyway, I found a statement from the European Medicines Agency... Here it is....
http://www.ema.europa.eu/docs/en_GB/document_library/Other/2010/12/WC500100102.pdf
Again, thank you to everyone for alerting me.... I'll be calling Baxter tomorrow morning to check if Mum has possibly contaminated solution....
Love...

Hi Darth,
So glad to hear your Mum is doing well. We too went to the hospital today to do my husband's PET test.
They had issued a letter, but said that other Health Trusts are adopting a 'wait and see' policy - obviously because of cost. As my husband is new to PD we decided to stop Ultraneal for a while until new stocks are available and use 2,27 Physioneal at night - but not keep it in for too long.
You could ring up your PD clinic and see what they think to this - especially as your Mum sounds as if she is doing really well. We don't want to take the risk of infection, which may spoil the peritonium - especially as it all seems to be going well - thank God.
Excuse my ignorance on matters of IT - took me quite some time to work out how to send a reply so PMs are still out of my reach!! :)

Hi Kay.....
I think you're right... I don't want to over react, but Mum has already had paretonitis three times... I can't let this go on....
I'll be giving Baxter a call tomorrow.....
Hope your husband does really well on PD...
Thanks again for the warning....
God bless...

Hi Darth,
I too will be calling Baxter - chances are we will get a recorded message! They should be phoning me on 12th Jan re supplies so i will inform them I don't want Extraneal until they have new batches.
Was your mother aware of breaking aseptic techniques when the peritontus struck? I have always felt it is the bags that are the cause or perhaps exit site infection.
Glad to see that her bouts did not compromise the efficiency of the PD.
Good night and God Bless,
Kay :)
