Title: Rejection or BK virus
Post by: topazbeauty on December 21, 2010, 05:22:13 PM
Got bad news today. I went in for my normal checkup today and my creatinine was 2.6! A few weeks ago it was at 1. They did an ultra sound to make sure that there wasn't an obstruction and there wasn't so they did a biopsy. A few hours later they came back that I either am in rejection or I have a BK virus infection. I have to wait until tomorrow to find out the results of the biopsy stain to see what the verdict is.

But after speaking a little to the doctors and doing my own research (I'm a med student) it looks like 1-5% of transplant recipients come down with a BK virus infection and of that group 50% end up losing the transplant. So it sounds counter intuitive but at this point my doctors and I are all hoping for rejection?!

I feel like I have no control over my life and I hate it.  :banghead;

I needed to vent.

Sometimes it's bad to research to much, but hoping you wil pull through. I am checked for the BK every 2 weeks since switching meds, but was checked once a month previously. I forgot what I read about the BK vius before my transplant 10 years ago, but hope they made some progress to treat it. I'll have to take out the my nurses guide o transplantation to read about it again.

True, but hopefully they can control the rejection with the use of the other medications so the kidney can keep goion.

Sort of a catch 22 on which is better right now for diagnosis, rejection good compared to BK virus (if rejection is controlled in time)

Good Luck

Thanks for saying hi on facebook today. I know how frightening it was for Jenna last January when she was going through rejection rescue. It sounds like you've got a good team, acting quickly, and that's what you want. I hope things stabilize and you can get home soon. Sending you lots of {{BIG HUGS}} - let me know if you need any help.  :grouphug;

Here's hoping you improve quickly and can still enjoy some of the holidays. It's a good reminder for us recipients of how quickly those bumps in  the road can become another mountain to climb but there are a lot of good people here praying for you so keep us updated as possible.

Best wishes

Ed

Saying prayers for good meds to help with rejection.   It sounds like you have great doctors and they are doing what they need to do.  Keep us posted because everyone here worries and cares about you.    :cuddle;
