What is considered safe to take for a dialysis patient with a fever? Tylenol, Ibuprophen?. My husband has a fever of 102 and has taken a couple doses of Tylenol. Also using Alka-Seltzer cold medicine. I have Alleve in the home also if that is safe to use. Thanks!

I only ever took Tylenol. I stayed away from any cold medicines and here's a link to info about the Alka-Seltzer....sometimes there's too much sodium in other otc drugs too.

Thanks for the link. Sometimes we don't think of things as "simple" as alka seltzer as a real "medine", but it sure looks it is. I will stick with the tylenol. Thank you for your quick reply!

I tihink it's good just to stick with tylenol. That's the only thing I was told I could take.
Hope hubby feels better soon. I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas!

Only thing hubby ever takes is tylenol.

Gee 102 :( I hope Mike is better very quickly. That is not good at all.

Ibuprofen and whatever is in Alleve have been shown to cause kidney damage, however, I have seen studies that show no connection.
I think it's a good idea to stick with the Tylenol. 102 is pretty high. I would consult a doctor (if you haven't already) if it doesn't go down soon. Thinking of you, Texasstyle

hope he feels better soon! seltzer no b/c of extra sodium...tylenol is fine.

102 Temp, in an Adult, can make You feel Awful. Hope Everything is Okay, Texas.

hows he doing ??? always worrysome these fevers.. Hope all is well

Hope the fever comes down tomorrow... over 100 is not good not good. If it weren't your husband or mine, it would be off to the doctor with him quick smart.

Tylenol is not marketed in the UK, but I see that the active ingredients are paracetamol and a cough supressor. Paracetamol is a cheap OTC drug.
Personally, I always feel better with a hot toddy; hot water laced with rum and whisky. :2thumbsup;

Stoday, you little monkey, hot water laced with rum and whiskey. In UK its paracetamol with honey, hot water and lemon juice. Hope Mike gets better soon. Have you been in touch with your GP?

Sure, but if your kidneys have already stopped producing urine, then they've failed already. How much more can you damage them with Alleve???
-
102 is not a temperature that you should be messing around with. If you guys are cool with it, you should bring him to a doctor. But still Tylenol would be good. I think if he is still feeling sick and the temperature haven’t drop even for a bit, you should bring him to a doctor as some sickness might seem to be normal but it might be caused of some other things that we had never imagined.

I take Aleve for joint pain. I think it works great. I have 4 kidneys, none of them functioning, so I don't think any more damage could be done to them.
